Giving Ironman a shot again. Is not going well.

Attempt 1: for a first contract, took a 1-skull caravan job to a neighbouring town where I was going anyway. Got attacked by brigands three times. First two I survived, third one was six raiders. RIP

Attempt 2: for a first contract, took a 1-skull base clearing job. Just as I was approaching, got attacked by six poachers. They got in two lucky shots in the opening, killing two of my six bros. The rest of the fight did not go well. Finis

Attempt 3: did a couple easy contracts, then took a 2-skull hunting job (I know, risky, but I had seven bros with pretty high stats and some decent armour.) Nachzehrers. One of them was a fully mature form. It ated all my bros. RIP

I think I'll go back to save-scumming.

I seem to be unable to learn not to waste money on poachers. Every single time, it's back to "Hey look, a poacher for 370 gold! Maybe, just maybe, for once I'll get a single shitty star in ranged!".

Nope.

Its obvious PoE is your game...
1. dont take caravan jobs unless you at 12, AI avoids full parties
2. skulls are less representative of difficulty than money, base clearings with 6 mercs is flat out retardation
3. 7 bros - ahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhaha
In conclusion, HA HA

Okay, started another one. I'll be a bit bummed if this goes pear-shaped just because the stats on my original band of misfits are so good. And I really didn't have much choice -- there were only daytalers and beggars... and one bowyer, one hunter, and one thief, shortly joined by a flagellant:

Anselm the Bowyer: 49 ranged skill with THREE stars (and 57 melee, other stats middling -- I think I'll give this one Quick Hands and a longaxe eventually, for some clobbering power, if I get some decent melee level-ups)
Gebhard the Hunter: 54 ranged skill, no stars though (came with a hunting bow)
Hartwig the Thief: 55 melee with THREE stars, 13 ranged defence, 6 melee defence
Gotffried the Flagellant: 56 melee with TWO stars

Basically I now have two meleebros with two stars and one with three, one rangebro with two stars, one with three. That is a good starting band.

Edit: whose alt are you Soulstones?

For what it's worth, I think even without any stars, Poachers and Hunters tend to get above average rolls in R Att (and R Def).

Just my experience.

Can I ask a theory question? When do you take gifted?

On temp bros, I always take it because I just need them a little bit more effective for the 20-30 days I'll have them around. But say you have an end game worthy bro. 3 star Matt mdef fatigue type. Do you take gifted to get those stats even higher or is it a case of diminishing returns?

Many see it as a wasted perk - and it kinda is. But I have minimum stat requirements for my lategame Bros, so I use it to abolish glaring weaknesses.

For my Frontline it's a decision between 'Gifted' and 'Indominable', for the backline it's 'Gifted' or 'Colossus'. So the Bros with 'Gifted' have to sit out fights against large Orc 'Sea of Tents'.

an immortality button in the settings so you don't have to reload if one of your guys accidentally dies

A zombie trait. Your merc will rise until his head is hacked off, but only 6 AP.

Also the opposite could be cool....a very old ninja master trait would be great. 12 AP but for each turn you have heart attack chance.
Roy Batty trait too: you merc will refuse to finish your enemies and will quit after some days.
This game needs modding.

I only give Gifted to real temp mercs with shitty resolve and stars in it. Otherwise Dodge. Like a beggar with 25 resolve.
Like this but without the tank stars

Colossus continues to be the tier 1 Perk of the Year 2018, if only for preventing annoying injuries caused by arrows.

I pick gifted for everyone who doesn't have very good starting stats or good talents, it makes a huge difference for bad and average mercs and you won't miss 1 perk that much if they make it to high levels. It's not like they're going to be great with some 1 other perk but without enough melee/defense/fatigue.

1. They start avoiding me at 8, but again, I'm on Beginner difficulty.
2. If you stick to a small group size, the game won't be so quick to scale up the enemies' numbers, or so I've read. Then you can have a small group of well equipped mercs, and have an easier time until you eventually grow in levels and numbers.

BTW, regarding stars - don't they change over time? I think characters can gain and lose stars as you play.

1. Dont play Beginner, and Ironman without full meta, it teaches you the wrong things. Dont take highly paid caravan jobs that go through woods at night...
2. I dont buy the scaling by group size, doesnt fit my memory. "Well equipped" is meaningless until Battleforged, eg for the first half of the game.
Stars dont change over time.

Hunters definitely do, they range between 52 and 59. Poacher a bit, although not so much, and they are trapped between 47 and 49 (as far as I have seen). So if you have bad luck with rolls, you can potentially end up with a 11 level, 67 R-Att poacher, which :argh::argh::argh:

re: Backgrounds

Been having good luck with Milita and Retired Soldiers, and ofc as always squires, brawlers, butchers, and lumberjacks.

The top tier/premium ones are usually too expensive to gamble on, though in my last game I got lucky and rescued a sellsword from a webknecht contract.

One that I think has some potential but requires investment is a good apprentice, since they can be taught by other backgrounds (brawler can give melee attack/defense, retired soldier can give bigger boost too). If you find one with some good stars in the key stats, they may be worth keeping around as whatever their background lacks in initial bonuses that something like a squire or brawler has, can be given to them later, making them eventually surpass some of those good backgrounds.

I use deserters for archers too if you're having trouble finding Hunters, but witch hunter or bowyer is probably better for the long run since they can also give you good events/loot.

Though overall my favorite low-to-mid cost background is squire still.

Gonna try to save up funds and get a good swordmaster and train him as a nimble murder machine, been seeing some good results on my archers with nimble, and this seems like a good strategy to take down schrats, who are currently my biggest issue to deal with in terms of surviving long enough to kill them.

Also, holy hell, I love polehammers so much.

Has anyone found a use for the dueling sword yet? I don't really know how to use this weapon and the raw numbers seem kind of bad. What's a good build to take advantage of the initiative damage bonus?

I use it on my swordmaster with quickhands, sometimes the 2nd attack mobility is useful, for just a few fatigue malus.
Damage doesn't seem much higher than a normal slash, even on the first few turns.
