The latter, as you can even turn in the journal to a guy at the Tarantian press in Caladon but when you return the next day it turns out that said guy was never employed by the newspaper and has disappeared without a trace with the journal. I believe that is the closest thing to resolution that quest gets. Its a very nice subversion of the typical fantasy power trip where you the random adventurer has a profound say over the politics of the realm.

Make the negotiations fall through, bring Dernholm back to power with Maximilian I and Lianna Pel Dar, and give the inventor the evidence he needs.

    Done , done and done.

The next part will be a bit of a clusterfuck as I reload twice to start over the negotiation and throgg's quests.

Speaking of Lianna, she has an okay magick greatsword on her. Unique too, I think.

    PART XIX: LORD 'KISSINGER' BYRON

We arrive at Roseborough, to seek out . . ah, I can't quite recall the name. No matter. He's buried at the local cemetery. But let's visit the inn first.
    Show Spoiler

    Very nice, indeed

There's a rock with some strange directions written on it

Ring of Brogdar? It's Arcanum's answer to Stonehenge. We'll see it later on.

    Inside the inn

    tell me about this matchbook

found it on a body at isf zephyr crash site

    What did he look like?

    anything else?

    did he say anything?

    it wasn't luck

    so he boarded the zephyr?

Can you tell me anything about Victor Misk?

There are two guys at the tables near the reception desk

    What are you doing here?

    Whats the problem?

    Picture of what?

    No

    What does it do?

I don't see anything 'simple' in this task

Turned out to be a hoax?

You must have been pretty scared

You just need the photo, right?

What if I got the photo?

    Compensation

Then we talk to the second guy, Jason

    Why?

    Wards?

Arronax and Nasrudin resurface once again

We ask him what he specialized in in his studies

What about the ring of Bogdar, anything else?

What do you think of the magic vs tech dichotomy?

    Have you searched for signs?

We do have an ancient gear that we recovered at the beached Vendrigoth submarine on the island of despair, but for whatever reason we don't have the option to show it to him

We farm for gossip from the local guard

I have to say, if I was ever to find myself in arcanum, roseborough inn would be the place I'd stay. Comfy, welcoming, far away from the turmoil of the kingdoms.

    Indoor swimming pool, too

We chat with some random woman at the bar, tell her our story

    [Drink it]

And that's pretty much it for Roseborough. It's not really a town, but a farming village, with cows and sheep corralled behind every house. There aren't many places to visit, and I can't seem to talk anyone into giving me a quest.

    What's your name?

    Moment of your time?

    Could I help?

I'm guessing she's the woman whose son is in the caladon prison. Too bad.

    The rude guy lives nearby

I don't know of any quests involving him. Perhaps he's with the thieves who live in the mountains, but we've yet to visit them. He's not a 'normal' npc though: far too well equipped for that

Victor Misk's father, Phillip, is buried here. Victor said that he hid the book only where his father and him would know ie. his father's grave. But of course I've somehow managed to lose the shovel since caladon ffs.

We'll have to go back and find. Here are the unique epithets in rosebourough cemetery

captain of the guard is here too. No quests and nothing much to say.

There are some broken boats rotting outside his place. Come to think of it, it's strange that the seaside Roseborough is a farming village, not a fishing one. I guess Troika ran out of money to really diversify the settlements.

And here's the Ring of Bogdar

We leave Roseborough and visit a couple of the places that we've discovered on our travels, or heard about from the guard in the inn. The strange lagoon:

We find a Villar Wisp, whose essence we need for that elf in qintarra.

The loot here wasn't worth screen capping. Next up is the Cold Place

    Spiral into madness

The blue turd slipped on the ice LOL

    Not worth it. Again.

    At Lethe Wyvern's hideout

    *Snap snap*

We go back to roseborough with the photos; discover Broken Cathedral in the process

Unidentified sword here. I wonder who was worshipped here. Kaitan?

    I got 'em!

    I did! (lie).

I didn't actually bother to look for the bridge, but I know where it is. It lets you pass into the Glimmering forest from the southwest without having to go all the way around to Hadrin's Pass in the north.

We identify our loot in tarant

What's the latest in the news?

And there's some new characters in town. At Willioughsby's place

The mage and Willioughsby are exiting the latter's house as we're passing by. We stop to talk to the mage

    Why are you here?

    What's Tulla like?

    Where is Tulla?

    Why did you come here?

    What happened?

( I apologize but I completely forgot to read it after the conversation, so I'm none the wiser as to what happened )

    Who's Master Simeon?

Do you wish to travel with me?

    [tell him full story]

    Yes

    Will you join me?

So how many people is that now? Byron, Virgil, Sogg, (Chaucer), Torian, Jormund, Perriman, Waromon. 8 fighters. Charisma of 20 is pretty handy, it seems.
Looking back, I should have stuck with Gar for longer. I didn't foresee my karma bobbing back up to 20 after the -50 genocides. Perriman and Jormund are expendable and will leave us sooner or later.

Let's talk with Willioughsby, the chairman of the Industrial Council of Tarant

Ok. Let's wait for 2 hours and go there.

    At the hall of records

    Can we speak?

    can we speak of them?

Was there once a king, perhaps?

    (Uh-huh, sure. 'Outdated'.)

No.. What is the Unified Kingdom?

(Ashbury doesn't have a king, let alone a kingdom. It's castle was literally run by Lord of the Damned/Undead)

    A few more questions plz.

Tell me of the industries here

Tell me of the problems here

    What 'personal measure'?

Alright, tell me about the labour unions

Tell me more of your position on the council

    Really?

I might be just the man you're looking for

    What needs to be done?

    Done

    Anything else?

    Of course

The book he gave us has unique artwork

If anyone wants a reminder on the terms and conditions for Caladon's acceptance into the UK

TLDR: Limit magic use, mildly support unionization, half of caladon's army is to serve with the UK etc etc.

We're leaving the premises when a stranger intercepts us

    Yes it was

    What are you insinuating?

    I don't know what you're talking about

I'm sorry who did you say you were?

Are you implying that Caladon's membership is a bad idea?

    So?

But we gain an ally! We spend less on defence! ( Yes, it should be spelled 'defence' with a 'c' in Arcanum, sorry Cainarsky )

But if we gain a new ally we have nothing to fear

    Why wouldn't Willie see this?

    What price?

    What could he possibly gain?

    What is to be done?

    I've agreed to nothing, Jenks

What do you have in mind, then?

    Yes, I have

    I'm .. still listening

    Agreed

It's hard to forego 20k in gold. We'll see what we'll do once we get there.

There seems to be some commotion outside of Bates' factories

    what happened then?

    Throgg?

    What can be done?

why don't you go inside yourself?

    i'll speak to him

We talk to Wheeler as well

I am helping put an end to this

    Inside

I'm here to speak to Throgg and help you

I'm here to deliver a message from Babcock

You can continue to hide out in factories, I suppose

Something that will put you legally beyond Wheeler's reach

    Back outside

    Thank you. Good day.

Well, that was the good conclusion to this quest, but I want the more fun version. We cannot, however, do it right now. We'll have to visit Caledon first. So I reload the game just before I spoke to Babcock..

and immediately set off for Caladon

    Sounds clear enough

    So?

('Economic future of Arcanum' exaggerating much?)

So we walk inside and there are lines of people on either side, waiting to accost me about the upcoming negotiations

    Sure

    How can I help?

    Parliament:

Ok so that's enough venality for now, let's head up to the podium to conduct the negotiations

Caladon can build and own it's own railroads

Use of magic must be regulated

    Bates will be taxed heavily

UK troops will stand guard outside your walls

No tax for 5 years, followed by a reduced rate

Caladon gold will be honored equally

    UK will always pay tolls

Union members will be shot on sight

Same number of votes as Tarant

They will always collect the grain tariff

    Thank you

We collect all the bribes as we walk out. Willie is waiting for us.

    Of course, here it is

I've bankrupted you, Willie. Your council is screwed.

I did what I thought best, Willie

I'd rather spill your blood than take such measly offerings!

Then I go back to Tarant, and visit the factory. This time I forego convincing Throgg to step down. I tell him I'm going to follow his cause.

    Your plight speaks to me

I'm here to burn Tarant to the ground

These fools will never listen to reason. I'm from Shrewsbury-upon-Stonewall, and I say kill them all!

    Ok, ok, let's reload

    You know they'll kill you

Dying like a caged animal would accomplish even less

Innocents? Did they try to stop Wheeler?

It all kicks off outside and across Tarant in general

We pry Wheeler's gun from his dead hands

And then fight our way out of the city

    (Escape from Tarant)

You get a bad rep not just in Tarant

We get out of dodge and run straight to Roseborough. One of my companions had a spare shovel. We waste no time in digging up Phillip Misk's grave and get our hands on the much coveted volume

    (Map for finding Tseng Ang)

I close the book, content with myself. The music playing is the very same as the Stillwater theme, my favourite track in the game. We've made great progress and have cut Tarant down with the help of the downtrodden. Our party is well stocked and well equipped. Everything is coming along well and I'm ready to end the episode and continue on in a few days time.

Then the thought hits me with the force of a derailed locomotive: if I truly fucked Tarant in the negotiations, why did Willioughsby appraise my services to the tune of 3k in gold pieces?
What could Tarant possibly gain from Caladon's uncongenial accession to the UK?

Irrespective of the terms, Tarant wants Caladon in the UK. They're desperate to tie it up in the kingdom's bureaucratic structures. If Caladon enters the UK, no matter the terms, it's finished. Tarant wins.

And we can't let that happen.

I reload the game and go back to the negotiating table to throw the worst possible demands at Caladon. Army? You'll be under martial law. Bates? He gets privileges in Caladon. Agriculture? Your farmers cover the full costs. Ports? UK has right to operate here freely. Gold? It will be a punishable offence to own Caladonian gold! Taxes? You pay double! Parliament? No votes for you! Ever!!

    :troll:

    *unholsters the hand cannon*

    Nice knowing you, Willie

Whilst we're here, I check out the kitchens to see if we can still assassinate the king of Caladon

    But after a long journey..

I realize that the king isn't here. If you complete the negotiations quest, he despawns from his room

The two quests are mutually exclusive.

Since we've been kicking the can down the road regarding the sewer systems, let us clear out Caladon's whilst we're here

We find some fancy stuff here

    and a treasure trove

I said that Waromon does NOT wield weapons. I was wrong. He immediately equips arcane weaponry.

    Another treasure trove

We climb out just outside the panarii temple

    identifying the loot

And NOW we kickstart the orc rebellion

Back at Roseborough, I wanted to talk to the reception, but the Tarantian reporter attacks me as soon as I come in. Good attention to detail.

We take the key to his room. Not much in there.

And so we once again dig up the grave

and that's that. Even though Caladon has abnegated the opportunity to enter the UK, I'm still a wanted fugitive there due to my participation in the orc rebellions.

The less said about Tarant, the better. What little remains of the capital now harbours people with nothing but hatred towards me ( for good reason, tbf ). This calamitous change in Tarant's fortunes spells a seismic shift in the political power of Arcanum. Caladon may despise me, yet I am the one who delivered them from eternal vassalage. Meanwhile, Lianna del Par has by now reinstated Maximillian as the rightful king of Dernholm in the hopes of revamping the failed state and starting afresh. Even if Tarant recovers from the riots, it will find itself in a precarious position.

It's cool how your stats influence which the councilors in Caladon will speak with the player.

And it's done way better than in most recent games.

Am I correct in remembering that we're firmly in the end-game stage by now? Tseng Ang is really short and then it's the jaunt over to Vendigroth and then the

What have I missed that needs finishing? Ancients Gods Quest will be top priority, then there's the wheel clan key, sewers in Tarant ( don't think I'll be clearing them out tbf, they don't that much loot ). Caladon, Tarant, Shrouded Hills are done. Dernholm has the pits which we didn't yet visit. There's also Franklin Payne in Blackroot (?).

Also regarding Throgg's quest, I'd guess that either killing him or starting an uprising would earn negative Karma, but which one gives the most? ie in Troika's eyes, which is more evil, killing an activist or starting an uprising?

I don't know, unfortunately, and the wikia makes no mention of the karma adjustments. I think that stirring up the riots does not give you any negative karma, whilst killing Throgg does ( it definitely gives you 2 fate points ). However, if you stir up the riots, everyone in the city will attack you on sight, so you will lose 5-10 karma points as you fight your way out of the city.

PART XX: A CONSPIRITARD AMONG BRAINLETS

We venture north, to Tseng Ang, to confront the dark elves about their meddling in Arcanum's affairs.

We also stopped off at Qintarra on our way here, to deliver the Volar Wisp Essence to the elf woman. She gave us some trinket in return, can't remember what it is now. Not very important. Anyway..

    Min

    right here

    Hey you!

    Where is everyone?

    Moloch. hand

    Thank you.

    More dork elves

I want to ask you smthing

Tell me of the dork elves

There's some fair maiden all lonely on one of the platforms

    You've made a hasty assessment

    Lord Byron

I've found honesty to be the only road to real truth

    Who do you seek?

    I know nothing

    Aren't you a dark elf?

    What have they done?

    Join me

    Yes, will you come?

There's a ruckus on the other side

    Some ogres are enslaved here

    Who are you?

Slave? Why haven't you destroyed him

    Big spell?

    I'll be leaving now.

    Let's go see Min Gorad

    (she's voiced)

The dialogue choices and c&c really branch out here, so we'll be doing this part a few times over with varying results. Not all that'll be posted here is in the actual playthrough, because I'll be reloading and redoing the conversation a few times to get as much info as possible.

I've come to report on the blimp crash survivor

    Killed him myself

    Exactly

    I'm also here for info

We're looking for the link between bmc and survivor

what is the info that was passed?

why were the dwarves banished to the void?

So if this seems a bit confusing: dark elves were responsible for banishment of the dwarves into the void so they could be enslaved by arronax to construct a 'portal' from the Void into our reality. This would lead to Arronax returning to rule over Arcanum, with the dark elves as his lackeys.

Virgil, what should we do now?

As we go outside, some guy blocks our passage

Yes, of course, so sorry sir

you're mere whipping boys for the dork elves

    why kill me?

    what did i do?

so i was in the wrong place, wrong time

(You could talk your way out and tell him that he's serving the wrong people, but I prefer to kill him instead. He has some decent loot.)

Once we leave Tseng Ang, Virgil inexplicably leaves the party

    Let me help!

We go to Qintarra and ..

.. we can't go in because there's noone left to open the door. So we can't progress here.

I want to point out a few things before I reload: we entered tseng ang with a positive alignment of 2, so an important option in the dialogue wasn't available to us. If you speak to min gorad as a 'good' person, then Virgil will leave you and go the to Sobbing Onion in Caladon. It will later turn out that he has been killed by gangsters, but you will be able to resurrect him with a scroll. This will give you some unique dialogue about Virgil and his past: from what I remember, he was a criminal himself who owed big money to the wrong people. They threatened to go after his family, but he didn't pay any heed, so they killed his brother Lawrence in cold blood. This led to Virgil having a breakdown and running away to join the Panarii in the hope to atone for his misdeeds. After you resurrect him, he shares with you his backstory, but also becomes a changed person, kind of like Morte from PlanceScape Torment after you force him to tell you the full truth about his past.

But if you speak to Min Gorad as an evil person, then you will get an evil Virgil who never leaves the party and never dies. That's the Virgil we'll be getting. Let's reload the game and take our karma down a couple of points.

    I've come to report

    I am the survivor

    where are all the dwarves?

blah blah, this leads you to fighting Min Gorad and being forced to kill her.

Another way to go in this conversation is to tell her that you're with the molochean hand, but that you haven't yet killed the survivor and you need more info. Press for the info and she'll get pretty angry

It is my presence that troubles you. I see the lust in your eyes.

This pickup line backfires spectacularly and she attacks us immediately. No matter, we can reload the game. Since we're evil, you can disavow the Molochean hand and offer your services to Min Gorad directly.

    How?

    consider it done [truth]

    We soon arrive in Stillwater

    and clear it out

oh no she's casting bubble wrap

since we get to kill all of the store owners, we can get our hands on their inventories for free

    Thank you.

    Look at that alignment..

And when did I hit 20 Intelligence? I've forgotten how much points I've sank into it.

We put a point in smithing so we can craft the pyro axe. This weapon is a beast.

We give it to Torian, who automatically unequips the super duper Mystic sword to wield the axe. Too right, the axe deals 30-50 fire damage. If you specialize in smithing, then you can get your hands on this about the time you first arrive at Tarant, making you an unstoppable juggernaut in the main questline to the very end.

    Back to Caladon..

we get a vorpal bunny random encounter. This is apparently a Monty Python reference. I wouldn't know, never watched it.

And finally, we meet the legend himself

    Virgil?

    Wait!

    lol

we have to fight our way through to get to the panarii temple. Amazingly, then still don't hate us after all we've done.

a note for the prowl mastery quest. we won't be needing it.

and here's the panarii temple, with first acolyte alexander at the chancel

The rear is unlocked and we can go wherever we want ( for the most part ). The dialogue trees are more complex in these coversations, so often you'll see me say things which aren't an option on the screen, simply because I switched to another 'branch'

    who are you?

    tell me of the objects

    finger

    who's mannox?

    Scaevola

what about that purple glass thing?

ok, tell me about the black rock

Ok. Tell me, are these for sale?

Ok, tell me about the remains of Nasrudin

    Where are they?

    Have you seen them?

I'd love to take a look at them myself

No, [tell him the full story]

    Alright then, I'm leaving..

(Well, we do have a charlatan's protege as background :smug: )

Ok then, I'll bring back whatever I can find

Few more questions first. who found the remains of Nasrudin?

That's all we need to know for now. We have our sidequests updated:

The guy in the room across:

What are you working on now?

    Arcaheon?

    Discrepancies?

    Anything else?

Few more questions plz. Who's the statue outside?

    Who is Mannox?

    No, tell me more

    Tell me of Nasrudin's remains

    are they authentic?

    who discovered the remains?

same guy who witnessed the ascension

    quite convenient, innit?

    [tell him full story]

    Yes

We go to the back to descend to the sarcophagus, but out way is bared

    Might I go in?

I'm on the pilgrimage myself, achsuully

There's a crate full of robes in a little storage room

but they're not the right robes

so we descend the other flight of stairs and meet Kan Hua, the dark elf who is also one of the leading men of the panarii church. So basically, Kan Hua lived in the times of Nasrudin and was against him. After Arronax was banished and Nasrudin disappeared, the Panarii church was established to keep his legacy alive. Kan Hua changed his name and infiltrated it

    He likes to hiss

I think I fucked up and missed a couple of screenshots here. To sum up, Arronax and Nasrudin were both on the elven council, which ruled over all of Arcanum. Then Vendigroth challenged their authority by building super technology:

And now we get a 3d cinematic cutscene

This is a bad quality let's play from some random polish youtuber, but it has the Kan Hua narration for the cinematic. It starts at 8:55

    more questions?

    Age of Legends?

why are you the head of the panarii?

Someone's been reading Art of War

    Your secret lies with Nasrudin?

Ok, more questions. What is banishment?

    what is the void?

    you've been speaking with arronax?

tell me of the others who were banished

    Bane

    Kerghan

    He didn't resist?

    Gorgoth

    Kraka tur

    I have to go, then

    But Vendigroth is destoyed

How do i find the device?

    who is this bloke?

    where is he?

    He disappears right after

We go back to the antechamber and speak to Alexander, the first Acolyte, once more. There are a lot more options now

I've been uncovering some strange things

    foul play is afoot

are they in the temple? The remains, that is

    Who was Nasrudin?

    what happened?

    Who was Arronax?

    where is he now?

    banished?

how is that different from death?

I know of one who came back from the void ( Stennar rockcutter, also the apparition outside wheel clan)

    [tell him full story]

    yes

    hmmmmm

Ok, few more questions. Where is Nasrudin now?

    where did he die?

    archaeon?

where do i get a copy?

what is the essence of Nasrudin's teachings?

    what is evil?

Elven and dwarven are very different

    Yes. Shapestone.

    Solidity vs immateriality?

(I've no idea what the 'smart' reply is in these choices. Anyone who's an Arcanum veteran remember what the dialogue is if you answer correctly?)

    Who is Arronax?

    Age of Legends

    Elven Council?

I've discovered some more strange things about your church

[tell him what gunther said about Kan Hua]

tell him about the Gunther's discovery of the panarii name

    when was the church started?

    who started it?

So that's that for this conversation.

As we turn to leave, the game glitches and Virgil gets very excited to see Alexander for the first time

This also breaks Virgil's character, since he killed Joachim and is now 'evil'. I don't like this Virgil at all. It's a valiant attempt at c&c, sure, but changing Virgil character from the easy-going, jovial companion to the murderous fiend, and then leaving in these tidbits of reactivity, creates a dissonance. I wish I could keep Virgil as 'good' for the duration of the game, but alas.

    Here's the archaeon

We get into a minor kerkuffle with one of the guards and end up killing everyone

This is a very boring outcome, so I reload the game. Before I do that, though, I discover the key to the sarcophagus on Alexander's corpse. So when I reload, I use a fate point to pilfer the key from him. The guards don't care if you have the key

and off we go to the subterranean sepulchre

Now, there are a few ways to get here. I think you can convince the archaeologist to let you inside, you can find the appropriate set of pilgrimage robes ( I guess? ), you can scour the sewer system to find a hole in the wall that will lead you to this chamber or you can do as I did, steal the key and walk right in.

We open the sarcophagus and take the skull

On the inside of the lid, there's writing. In blood.

We go back to the archaeologist with the skull

there was a drawing in blood

So the body in the sarcophagus isn't Nasrudin? It's Mannox?

Next up is the other guy

Wait [ tell him of the blood ]

    We go back to Alexander

    the skull..

tell him about the skeleton missing its finger

    and the thanatos resting place

So we turn around and leave

That's it for today. Unfortunately, since we've already thrown in our lot with the dark elves, we cannot travel to Thanatos, which is a pity.
The mannox conspiracy can be solved if you follow the opposite of the directions inscribed on the rock outside the roseborough inn, which will lead you to a cave with a diary that will reveal a lot. But if we solve the conspiracy and tell Alexander the truth, then Kan Hua will punish us for our betrayal by banishing us straight into the void.

If you're following the good path, then you would never know of Kan Hua's role in the conspiracy, but you would be able to go to Thanatos and find Nasrudin. He's still alive, living in self imposed exile in misery after the banishment of his son, blaming himself for his son's misguided notions of elven supremacy. After you tell him all that happened, he will also tell you to go to Vendigroth to retrieve the device, but he will want you to enter the Void and kill Arronax for good.

Vendigroth is the last area we need to visit in the game. Our journey there will be a lot shorter than usual ( I think ), because the magical, desert city of Tulla is closed to us in the evil playthrough. I'm not too chagrined by that, although it definitely is the most 'unique' place in Arcanum being the hub of the magickal colleges. It features an elaborate pressure plate puzzle, ancient spirits, portals to all the corners of Arcanum etc. Some pretty cool stuff, but it's very time consuming.

Before we head off to Vendigroth, we'll need to complete the ancient gods quest, the iron clan quest and the pits of dernholm. All that will be in the next episode. Then vendigroth ruins, and then the end.

I recall being able to go to Thanatos even if you ally yourself with dindu elves and slaughter Stillwater.
    Show Spoiler
you have to do a mini-quest for Nasrudin to redeem yourself, it also can lead to interesting stuff [IMG]

IIRC if you attack the vorpal bunny through that particular random encounter it turns into the Giant of Stillwater and you can get its authentic hide. I was under the impression this random encounter automatically triggers after you complete that giant hunter's quest you got locked out of. The trick is that the quest itself is a fool's errand but since you get the random encounter around Stillwater afterwards you can connect the dots and attack the bunny. Could be wrong about some of the details, though.

EDIT: Also Virgil turning into a psychopath with zero buildup was super lame. I really wish troika didn't include shitty moralism in Arcanum. There are already compelling ideologies presented in the game, degenerating them into "''good"" and ""evil"" factions strips so much of the nuance.

no, the vorpal bunny doesn't do anything. I killed it and it didn't turn into anything. The random encounter you're thinking of is the blue bunny, and that only triggers after you leave stillwater if you've completed the quest. I think the vorpal one is just one of the very rare random encounters you can get. I read on another walkthrough that if you walk around qintarra long enough, you can get an encounter with 20 or so kites standing in a circle around a dead human body, but I've never experienced that myself.

Another cool "ending" happens if, after having sided with dark elves, you discover the truth about St. Mannox and tell everything to alexander. Try it ;)

    To discover the truth:
    Show Spoiler

    Go to Roseborough
Go near the sea\water and keep walking NW until you find a little circle
That wheel suggests you are not too far from the place you're supposed to go.
After 1-2 screen you should have found a building with a "special" entrance

Enter it. And know that your followers may take the things on the floor. So be hasty and take them yourself asap.

Seems like you didn't manage to shag M'in Gorad. Pity.
