Any reason to doubt WL3 will be good?
Didn't see anything negative from the preview copies.
Apart from the fact InXile have yet to make a good game?
Surely they've got to make a good one eventually, right?
I wouldn't count on it.
Game development companies succeed because some game design visionary like Shigeru Miyamoto (Mario, Zelda), John Romero (id Software), Hidietaka Miyazaki (Demon Souls, Dark Souls, etc) comes and defines the creative vision for the company and creatures a culture that attracts like-minded but less talented creatives to come and continue nurturing his legacy once he either dies, retires, or declines into shit.
Brian Fargo was never a game design visionary (he built a company on the back of a good Wizardry rip off) and long ago shifted to seeing games almost completely as products (which also seems to be the guiding creative philosophy of inXile, that they're making "a product"). There's no one else beside Brian at inXile that seems to have any real enthusiasm or vision for how to further develop the RPG genre from a creative point of view, except for one or two glimpses of "what could be" here or there -- but who knows whose responsible for those, and the odds that they're consistently employed by inXile or will rise to any meaningful position of creative authority are about zero.
Still, there are some factors in inXile's favor on Wasteland 3. Wasteland 2 was their best product, they have many models for what works and what doesn't based on previous experience and what it is the market right now, and Microsoft is probably writing them a blank check to finish the game because they don't want a bad release to further tarnish the reputation and market value of the studio they just bought.
