The Peril on Gorgon expansion DLC for The Outer Worlds is out today, over ten months after the release of the original game. That's lot of time for what appears to be a largely more-of-the-same expansion. Some critics have argued that popular opinion of The Outer Worlds has shifted negatively since it launched last year. If that's true, I'm not sure very many people will play this, but I suppose it will be a nice extra perk when the game is released on Steam next month. Here's the expansion's launch trailer, which appropriately is just the announcement trailer with a different ending slide:



Here are the launch day reviews for Peril on Gorgon. The review scores suffer a bit due to its more-of-the-same nature. Beyond that, they also provide some details about the content the expansion adds to the game outside the Gorgon Asteroid.

The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon is available for sale on the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store for $15. Unlike the base game, Microsoft's Game Pass won't get you the DLC "for free", though it does give a 10% discount. It's also worth taking a look at the store page for the Expansion Pass, which has a few details about the game's second expansion, titled Murder on Eridanos. That's coming out next year.

I'm having a distinct feeling that currently Obsidian is separated into two factions, with Sawyer and those championing more traditional RPGs being in one corner, and Boyarsky and his cronies in the other.

A friend of mine who used to work in game design says that the biggest problem with roleplaying game stories is that developers mistake writing more for writing better and that other genres are better suited for interactive storytelling. What do you think

If the central narrative is meaningfully interactive, I would classify it as an RPG. That is, I consider interactive storytelling to be the primary defining characteristic of RPGs.

I don't disagree that some designers write too much, but I think that's an indictment of specific content, not the fundamentals behind the genre.

You would not consider old dungeon crawlers as RPGs, then? And do not many adventure games center around interactive storytelling?

I would consider them RPGs by the definitions of their time. If someone were to make Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord today, I would not consider it to be an RPG.

Well, it's not like he is wrong.

I wouldn't consider Baldur's Gate an RPG either. It's some linear dungeon crawler hack and slay whatever.

I don't know what you'd call a dungeon-crawling game with heavy emphasis on stats derived from tabletop RPGs other than "an RPG". If anything, this is an example of a parasite taking over its host organism, to the point they've eaten out the brains of designers like Sawyer and convinced him that the bastardized evolution of the thing is more the essence of the thing than the actual thing.

Ancient RPGs of the 80s just emulated the dungeon crawling aspects because there was no way to actually make a real RPG back then. The Japanese ended up going cargo cult on this when it came to narratives.

From what I've heard - and it may be complete nonsense - the egos of Sawyer and Boyarsky/Cain clash quite a lot, and since Sawyer isn't really good at personal conflicts, there's basically a "silent treatment" going on between both devs and "their" teams.

Wouldn't be the first time a situation like this occurs at Obsidian. Ask Chris Avellone. Or Eric Fenstermaker.

Those weren't factions. Factions is what happened with Alpha Protocol when one group wanted to make one kind of game and another group wanted to make another and they both did exactly that at the same time.
