Have you tried to identify items? Read a text even on the proper computer like Pentium using Win 95?

Wizardry Gold had a sort of game-breaking bug. You can't exit skill screen until distribute all points, so if you have all 100 in some subgroup (Lizardman Fighter and all his three physical skills, for example) you can't do anything short of hitting Alt-Ctrl-Del.

The main advantage of Wizardry Gold is a constantly present automap. That's all. Still, using automap manually in Wiz7 is not a real chore.

Character creation is tedious,
Character creation in AD&D is done in one-two minute tops.
exploration is tedious.
Lolwut? Slums from PoR, for example, are great.
They invented the concept of shops without signs, everything looks the same, great city exploration.
Someone, I think, never saw Bard's Tale.

Wiz 8? Is that the first Wizardry I could not get engaged in ? All I can say is Wiz 8 was terrible. I never got much beyond the first 20 minutes and the graphics were utterly abhorrent.

Do you mean graphical fidelity or art style???
Going from the fantastically realized 8-bit wonders of Lost Guardia artistic marvels to all these incredibly ugly 6 triangle monsters and 128 triangle environments was a disgrace to the Wizardry Series. That's why the entire company of Sir-Tech deserved to crash and burn in a crimson blaze of fail immediately after it was released. They destroyed their own series IP with that game.

The same could be said of the shift from the awe-inspiring graphic beauty of LANDS OF LORE when compared with the hideous eye-scorching horror of LANDS OF LORE II which used the ugliest artwork I have ever seen for a computer game.

If you don't know what made your own series great, don't write a sequel to it because you will stuff it up. We forgive DOOM for being a pixelated crapfest because of the speed and mechanics it made possible at the time. The idiots who made Wizardry 8 believed that combining a raycaster FPS engine with Wizardry turn-based mechanics was going to be a winner with their customers and most people could have told you that wasn't going to work.

You should have seen the engine that Shams wrote for STONES OF ARNHEM. Looked a million times better than Wizardry 8 and we still satisfied the demands of the cretins, slobbering halfwits and congenital morons at Sir-Tech.

Cleve, for the sake of preseving wondrous Grimoire's history, not for some dirty insinuations, like it was with some morons from main Grimoire thread, is Michael Shamgar recreated this engine as Kingstep 3D engine, do the original Stones of Arnhem engine allowed some things better than Grimoire's?

The Stones of Arnhem engine was a blobber made out of a terrific high resolution raycaster. For the time it was pretty beautiful graphics and certainly vastly superior to Wizardry 8. Amongst other things, Shams was so brilliant we had worked out a way to provide these klowns with 8-way movement and diagonal cells ... which is so tricky in terms of programming that it makes me tremble with terror to even contemplate the hacks that were involved. The Siroteks wasted thousands of hours on this crap by insisting on it because they lacked the capacity to visualize it. Once built, they said "It looks sort of odd sometimes." No sh*t Sherlock. These guys were basically borderline retarded, both brothers.

The Grimoire engine is completely different. It is an old fashioned blobber grid engine pseudo-2D with very fine scaling between movements. Our graphic art is maintained at a very high resolution throughout so it looks good no matter what. It is actually anti-aliasing the 256 color palette as it scales so there is no distortion. We wanted the traditional engine except with very smooth movement between cells. Turned out legendary, as good as any of the great blobber classics.

It tells you a lot about the quality of the coders who remained at Sir-Tech that they suggested that the Grimoire engine was somehow derived from STONES OF ARNHEM. The two engines were so radically different in the way they worked and the visual appearance that only an unemployable marginal miscreant would think they were related. The STONES OF ARNHEM engine looked like the LANDS OF LORE II engine except double the resolution and no pixelation at any angle, unlike the horrible LANDS OF LORE II raycaster debacle.

BTW. Wizardry 8 start is probably the best beginning in any RPG ever. The Monastery is the best "tutorial dungeon" ever. A shame the game goes downhill to endless boring open areas and dull dungeons.

The best is I or V. I because is a very tight and elegant game, and V because of the expansion in combat ranges. But too grindy and some puzzles are contrived.

IV is a different beast I wish they reiterated with party of 6, and bit less brutal dungeon.

VI is better overall than VIII
VII is great but too slow to play.
