Jesus Christ. Simmer down, Pippin. You'll give yourself an ulcer.
Workshop is good too and so is the tits thread, but the latter is hardly unique to the codex.

That's a really funny pic. Whoever posted it originally must have been a gentleman of refined taste :obviously:

It's the only real old school RPG site. Who else is expert, Brother "emotional engagement" None, whiteknight for any dev who will have him? lololol

Heh. Newfags.

Anyway, I'm not mad, I just find it amusing that two guys who agree they like LPs find everything else about these forums useless in a more general sense. Especially since Brother None is not a troll, which makes it all the more frightening that he considers the following to be null and void:

Nah, I don't. Ulminate overstated for effect, I think. But the Playground is what keeps me visiting daily. I also frequent the news forums, read the articles, and (very rarely) check out the RPG discussion forum, but I wouldn't visit daily for that. So yeah, to me the Playground is the most important forum, while something like GD I literally only visit when someone provides a "look, the Codex is being nuts again" link. That means exactly jack shit though. Certainly not intended to be taken as seriously as you're taking it, so: sorry.

Me? Overstating for effect? Impossible. Grunker knows well enough to take everything I type as if I was deadly serious.

Insert clever insult here
He's cracking. The stress of running Codex is nothing to sneer at.
No. After being exposed to Vaarna_Aarne's, Black Cat's and well-meaning friend's dumbfuckery plus Andhaira & Prosper it's only logical to infer that every single one of us must be utterly insane.
The real kicker is that Black_Cat and Vaarna_aarne put aside their differences and cheerfully fly spaceships together in Star Trek Online now.
This. More people should be aware of this fact. Internet-Friendship can bloom from insane Internet-Drama!

Also, good editorial, DU.

Oh, crack it bro. For some, the Codex is a less legitimate community because of a few psychos than other "prestigious" communities like GameBanshee or the Watch. Because we have this crazy, flamboyant, tranny-chaotic funky flipside we lack legitimacy. That's OK, it's a fair perception to have when you're some brainwashed outsider who doesn't know what the psychotic LSD-trip covers for.

However, having been here for more than half a decade you should know better. Certainly our own semi-serious posters should, haha.

I'm not bemoaning our position as the black sheep of RPG Communities by the way. We chose that role ourselves. But I do respect those from outside who recognize we're not just the cesspit we may look like at times. Until now, I was fairly sure you were one of those ;)

I doubt BN would like Hitler though, he doesn't seem conformist enough to me. I still remember him for this little gem:

Brother None to Escapist "Game Journalists" said:
I'm sorry but huh?

If I read a book review, I assume the reviewer read the entire thing. If I read a movie review, I assume the reviewer watched the entire thing. And if something is called a game "review", I should damned well be able to assume someone played the entire thing.

Aren't you people getting paid for this? I'd say an integral part of being able to call yourself a game journalist (I usually don't, as the term has too many negative connotations) is that you have more expertise on the subject and, perhaps more importantly, spend more time on games than the average person?

Let me put it this way, if someone plays the Witcher for ten hours, goes onto a forum and posts "this game are the suck", I'd probably fault his usage of the English language, but other than that I'd shrug and go "at least he gave it a try." But he's not a professional, it's not his job to review games. The moment you make that your job, the moment you claim journalistic professionalism, you are held up to higher standards.

Because when push comes to shove, that's what this is about. A journalist's standards. If you do not play the entire game, don't come running to your users with something you claim to be a "review". You haven't played the entire game, then how can you review the entire game? That's patent nonsense. This article is an opinion piece, or an impressions piece, it is not a review.

The Escapist takes its sweet time, being one of the last to review this game, and then brings us a bunch of impressions based on an incomplete playthrough…and you're actually surprised people don't like it? It's an insult both to the professionals who did invest a lot of time before coming to their conclusions and it is deceitful to the readers to call it a review when it really isn't.

Right on, brutha! :bro:

Wow that top 5 list is depressing as hell. Is that really what the codex voted? Jesus christ.

Yes. I recounted it 3 times. It was rather depressing seeing those results. Potato gonna potato. ;)

Well, now that CRPG discussion is RPG discussion you might as well change that policy.
Dark Souls is certainly better than all the top 5 games in that sorry list.

Let's look at this:

Witcher 2: QTE popamole action game
Deus Ex: HR: QTE popamole action game
Skyrim: Hiking simulator
Drakensang: River of Time: Baldur's Gate, but in boring.
Old World Blues: Penis jokes don't make a game.

Let's compare:

Dark Souls: A majestic Gesamtkunstwerk of story, gameplay, RPG mechanics, mood, atmosphere, controls, art design, sound effects and voice acting with minimal cutscenes and not a single QTE.

Yeah, you know what, I think we need a Codex Review of Dark Souls. Someone needs to step up. I realize this isn't the kind of RPG we originally came here to talk about, but it's quality, something that's been sorely missing. If you're going to make a case that it's a console RPG then I should be able to ask: why are these popamole QTE games up there?

An easy way to tell how broken someone is is using his posts per day ratio as a gauge: the higher, the more broken.

Edit: Take all this with a grain of salt. But still, to shun one of the very best (action)RPGs made in the last 20 years for those games really hurts. Dark Souls will still be remembered in decades past as a classic when the novelty of DE:HR and Drakensang (hah) and Witcher 2 have long been forgotten. Why? Because it' has an art direction, mood, and a holistic "how good of a game" quality that makes you remember a work of gaming, as opposed to being forgettable shallow entertainment. I mean, gaming is shallow entertainment. But some games are just so much better than others that they light up the dark skies of today's gaming industry like a beacon.

Drakensang: River of Time: Dragon Age, but in boring.

Fixed that for you. Don't compare that piece of fail with Baldur's Gate, please.

Do it then. You guys fawn over this console action game more than any potato has fawned over the Witcher, yet you don't have the balls to put together a proper write-up of its excellence. While I doubt it is as good as you claim, a review might help win me over while we wait for the PC version.

In other words: DO IT FAGGOT.

It does feel a lot like a terrible BG 1, except the dialogue is more forgettable, there is no encounter design and the combat system is garbage and you can't go where you want to and the story is boring.

I never played Dragon's Age so I can't compare it to that.

Drakensang: The Dark Eye was boring. River of Time wasn't so bad, was it? Not spectacular, but well-made.

Also, Dark Souls is going to PC anyway, yeh? Codex can review it then. I still haven't played either Souls game, I can't, and I think a lot of Codex readers are similar PC purists.

Oh, crack it bro. For some, the Codex is a less legitimate community because of a few psychos than other "prestigious" communities like GameBanshee or the Watch.

I'm not really a part of any of those communities. Never really posted on GB or Watch outside of the news comments. Codex have the LP forum on 'em. But sure, having psychos does impact how seriously people can take the site. That just makes sense...doesn't it?

I'm not bemoaning our position as the black sheep of RPG Communities by the way. We chose that role ourselves. But I do respect those from outside who recognize we're not just the cesspit we may look like at times. Until now, I was fairly sure you were one of those ;)

You make your bed, you lie on it. I do read the news and RPG forums, like I said, but I don't take them more or less seriously than comments on other communities other than when they're particularly well or poorly argued. I like the articles, though they do often seem to be focused on giving lip-service to the community rather than critical thinking.

I think you can understand when a non-fulltimer feels it's kind of too much work to dig through the gunk at times, though? Not always worth the effort, though threads dedicated to a single RPG do tend to be nice and focused, usually.

Where did you get your seething hatred for Brother None? It doesn't align with my outlook on him, and since you're new, I'm interested. Are you someone's alt, or?

This happens to me sometimes. I'm just walking along on the internet and suddenly someone I don't know at all jumps up and starts ranting about me. Still, the Hitler thing is a first.

I just took what I'm pretty sure was my first foray into GD ever, to see what the fuss is about. I read a half-dozen thread titles and promise not to do it ever again.

Brother None: Hey, my critique was not meant as a "why-u-not-active-part-of-community." I was reacting to your dismissal of the good parts of the forum (which you can recognize without being an active part of it).

I guess I'm more sensible to that kindda stuff since I became more active here, though in my defense I did defend the content-production here in the past too, before I got involved in it, most recently when people started whining over VoD's very active newsposting. I'm just saying the Codex-Toilet thing got old before it began, and perhaps I mistook your comment as a slightly covered-up version of that.

Like anyone would read anything I wrote when I can't even write a forum post without sounding like a gibbering retard.

I know it's none of my business, but I really like all three of you, and I do think you've read too much into BN's comment. I mock the down-the-toilet comments every chance I get, yet I didn't see that Ulminati or BN's posts as saying that. Ulminati was clearly overstating (if there is ONE element that is truly a Hivemind on the 'dex, it's our propensity for hyperbole. This includes the previous sentence) and the way I read it BN saw it as such and responded because he likes Playground more than any other subforum. But even his post count speaks for itself: he's got as many posts there as in News, and his posting quality's the same across the board (probably more in-depth in News actually, though I do enjoy reading his comments in LPs).

This happens to me sometimes. I'm just walking along on the internet and suddenly someone I don't know at all jumps up and starts ranting about me.
In my defense, when I did that I had see a quote from one of your reviews and took it completely out of context. I think I apologized back then, but I'm happy to do so again, as you've been a permanent fixture of my brolist since, and when I could put a poster on the name and avatar I realized on reading old threads that no small number of posts that I like were made by you.

I think the Godwin was hilarious TBH.

inb4 lol u r sucking bn's cock
