inXile's Torment: Tides of Numenera Kickstarter just went live. The funding goal is $900,000, and the delivery date is December 2014. Here's the pitch video and a summary:

Torment: Tides of Numenera is a game set in the world of Monte Cook’s new tabletop RPG setting, Numenera. Torment continues the thematic legacy of Planescape: Torment, a critically acclaimed role-playing game from 1999 that's considered by many to be a hallmark for storytelling in computer RPGs. With Torment, we're striving to create a rich role-playing experience that explores similar deep, personal themes. Here's the scoop:
  • Torment is a single-player, isometric role-playing game.
  • You will play a single, specific character, though you will encounter optional NPC companions you may choose to include in your party.
  • The story-driven game will have a rich dialogue system and approach similar to that of Planescape: Torment.
  • The game will be developed in the Unity engine for PC (Windows), Mac, and Linux platforms.
  • The game will be available in English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Russian,Spanish.
  • The game will be distributed DRM-free. (You’ll be able to get it from Steam, and other DRM-free download options will be made available.)

As for the rest of the pitch, I think I can honestly say that it has exceeded all of our expectations in its length and detail. Even our former editor-in-chief is impressed, and let me tell you, that is no mean feat.

Funding appears to be progressing at a brisk pace. I'll be updating this post with further updates and information as I learn of them. For further updates, you might want to follow the game's official Tumblr. I've been informed that it will be updated more diligently than Wasteland 2's blog.

UPDATE: The target funding goal has been reached in just over six hours(!) Congratulations to everybody at inXile! Here's Brian Fargo's response to these events, which is also the first Kickstarter update.

The guys at inXile also videotaped the moment of hitting the goal:

Gave $125. I'm aching to get over to the $250 tier... perhaps eventually....

Well, shucks.

I must admit. After watching that video my KS fatigue has lifted and I am suddenly feeling my interest piqued. It really does sound fantastic. I think I'll wait a bit closer to the end date before I pledge, though. Now this is a game where the original Torment-style 2D background would be ideal. I haven't read all the info or been paying much attention to this thing....do we know what style this game is intending to incorporate?

Also: Brother None can we get some HD res screens of that concept art? Its pretty friggin' sweet.

I think this will end up more than Eternity.

I fucking hope so.

I'm still very butthurt because PE ( shitty setting and rtwp ) manage to acquire much more money than Wasteland 2 ( awesome setting and TB ).

:takemymoney: My money, Fargo, take it! That was some wicked concept art. Will be very interesting to see how they'll translate it into game graphics.

I'm a bit wary of giving InXile more money before I can play Wasteland 2 and judge if it's any good, but on the other hand I do want to support a game like this, so I'm in for $20. Might up that for the beta access add-on, I dunno.

A valid point but it does also make sense to get the pre-production and designing teams back to work ASAP though.

Wait, is that the first time they showed Wasteland 2 footage?

:takemyjewgold:

Damn it, sent $75 their way. Fly, my children, fly!

I really, really wanted to get the physical collector's edition - looks awesome - but an extra $20 for shipping outside the US and lack of beta access is lame. :( Seriously man - I live in Canada, it doesn't cost $20 to ship a small box over the border.

The early bird thing is a bit strange, since you can edit your pledge afterwards. It's to fuel the hype train, I guess.

Anyway, early birded the collector's edition. :obviously:
