Still withholding Patron payment in hopes that Taluntain and DarkUnderlord will, at some point, experience a modicum of shame in administrating a site that has ads comparable to a fly-by-nite Chinese free forum advertising Thai toddlers for rent to European businessmen.
I have no shame.

So, since I'm a cheapskate who doesn't want to pay, but still kinda interested in helping the Codex a little bit, I've disabled adblock on the site.
Recently (semi-recently, since a couple of months, I guess), I start seeing more ads that play some small flash-video which creates an excessive amount of CPU usage (one core at 100%).
The current culprit is Renault.

Now, it's possible that my shitty OS is responsible (I'm noticing it mostly on Linux), but I wonder if there's anything that could be done short of re-enabling adblock?

Which ad spot? Also, I think you can block only specific creatives with AdBlock as well, so you don't need to block everything due to one bad ad.

I had the same problem some months ago with Call of Duty ads (French version).

Problematic ads like that can appear in rotation, sure. If you spot it again, do report it for removal.

Why don't you guys get ads that people would actually click on instead of the "Eat THIS LOLOLOL and never diet again!!!!!!" bullshit? The only reason I can imagine you have those are that they are pay-per-display.

You are under the mistaken impression that we directly got to choose what's shown -- we don't. But there are hundreds if not thousands of ads in rotation and what the advertising providers consider to be premium locations/traffic also get better ads. The more ads that display to a single person per day also diminish the quality of displayed ads in the end. So what every person sees in the ads can vary greatly from one country to another, for example.

I feel like it adds to the nostalgia.. When I wanna bitch about OLD rpg's I want to do it on a 1999 geocities-esque website.

It would be great if you guys could add more Flaming Text Banners or maybe a tiled background gif of Calvin and Hobbes dancing to match the pop up ads that flash blue green yellow really fast and tell me about this new medication that doctors hate or pictures of lonely house wives with the caption "Some people in <country of proxy location> are making 9000 dollars a month staying at home"

:incline:

I'm actually glad to hear the stories of those earning thousands per day by staying at home and wish to hear more such uplifting stories.

Let me give you a different view on the matter:

- Other sites do the straightforward and transparent thing of having a nice little space reserved in their central forum's page showing where they are financially at the moment, and how much is lacking for the remaining of the year. Some of these sites even have a clicky for the user to see the balance (in the form of a balance screenshot for example).

*edit: To the site's defense, we also need to note that this -did- occur during the server replacement. Just remembered :)

No one minds the absense of that...

- Other sites where you can (or are motivated to) pay don't have their Mods trolling and tagging people. Or being able to do the fuck all they please sans even a modicum of valid excuse. Won't even go on cliques.

No one minds that either.. even the subscribed members seem to not mind that...

- Every site that is not strictly self-funded or solely run through subscriptions (ie closed to the public) has adds. In the year 2015, everyone comprehends what 'adds' entail and how the system functions.

And yet people mind THAT. Enough for a 28 page thread to appear on the site feedback..Even though adblock addons, hosts file lists and other measures (for the more IT savvy) are readily available..mobile versions included Blaine..here, let me assist you: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/android/addon/adblock-plus/

I will refrain from posting what i personally make from all the above, have already stated my conclusions regarding the majority of the Codex's regulars in detail
Your problem is neither DU nor his "actions". Your problem.. is mostly your own selves. To put it kindly. Sorry.

I want to see ads for penis pills, Thai ladyboys, milf porn, mail-order brides, sex toys, str8 turned gay porn, bondage gear, fursuit designers, free emoticons, and more conspiracy sites.

A pity this ad appeared in the Science subforum, I feel it is wasted there when Konjad has just made a new MILF thread in GD:

Little Red Riding Stud pulled the bobbin, and the door opened.

The Big Bad Cougar, seeing him come in, said to him, hiding herself under the bedclothes, "Put the condoms and the little pot of lube upon the stool, and come get into bed with me."

Little Red Riding Stud took off his clothes and got into bed. He was greatly amazed to see how this 25 year old grandmother looked in her nightclothes, and said to her,

"Grandmother, what big butt you have!"

"All the better to tease you with, my dear."

"Grandmother, what strong legs you have!"

"All the better to hold you with, my child."

"Grandmother, what big tits you have!"

"All the better to slap you with, my child."

"Grandmother, what soft lips you have!"

"All the better to suck you with, my child."

"Grandmother, what...loose pussy you have got?"

"All the better to eat you up with. You see, I am actually 72."

And, saying these words, this wicked cougar fell upon Little Red Riding Stud, and ate him all up.

For me it's any big flash video ad. Sites with subdomain 'wikia' are the worst for me. I've an i5 and a decent rig and chrome frequently crashes as a result. RPGCodex is having similar issues for me.

I can't wait until flash is banned by chrome in September. Great day to celebrate.

Jonathan who? I find such comments quite surprising, given that the number of ads up here is definitely among the lowest as far as gaming sites go and when it's common knowledge that probably more than half of the gamers block all ads, but ok, heh.

Believe me, nobody is happy with the state of Flash. If there was a better alternative, everyone would flock to it. Flash has been prone to crashing pretty much from the get-go. For some people, it works without any issues and when it's like that, it's fine. For others, it can mean constant hangs and/or crashes and it's pure chance if you manage to fix it via reinstalling or some other method. Adobe's simply dropped the ball when it comes to Flash.

And yes, wikia's sites are a good example of what advertising overkill actually looks like. Those can manage to hang or force to a crawl ever your average working Flash install.

I was pleased to see recruiting ads for the US Coast Guard. Thanks for doing your part to bolster the ranks of our fine military.
