Let me post on this thread just to say that I now know why they made such horrible deity portraits, it's so they can sell the classic portraits with their premium edition:

Notice the middle row: "Legacy Deity Portraits Pack"...

And it says this is on their Steam page:
Legacy Deity Portrait Pack: a nostalgic journey back to the origins of gaming greatness.  Relive the glory days of gaming with this special pack, which offers players the option to use iconic deity portraits from the classic game that captivated audiences worldwide.

Just picked it up. AoM is my second favourite of the AoE series behind AoE2. Probably won't play it too much but my RL friends from school will ride the first wave which will be good for some chill games. Might play a bit of ranked, dunno.

Probably going to need to upgrade my graphics card though, still running a GTX 1060 which is fine for AoE2 but I doubt it will be for this.

This should absolutely run on a GTX 1060.

Greeks have a problem against myth units due to their very limited access to heroes (only the 4 named ones you get from the TC), so Atlanteans spamming automata is an issue.
Yeah this is a classic greek problem. Atlanteans and Norse have little issues in that regard, and Egyptians can just spam priests.
Would 2 heroes per era be unbalanced for Greeks? I mean, what's 2 heroes when the Atlanteans can literally turn their entire armies into heroes?

looks like they made some changes to god portraits, but it still looks like AI slop
also they made some changes to the campaign like arkantos voice, portraits and other stuff

not sure what changed to multiplayer balance, need to check it out later

Were siege units always that deadly? A few shots and they fuck up my walls. I think they changed the behaviour of bears they don't attack my villagers anymore. The AI portraits are so generic like they are from a Chinese gacha game.

Yes, I've got the settings on High and it's running at 110-120FPS, seems smooth in fights in 1v1 at least. Ranked benchmark score was in the green maybe 3/4 of the way to the top.

The aesthetics do give some whiplash with the bad (presumably AI?) 2D profiles vs. the pretty well done 3D battles. It really does look nice in motion and the god powers have some real punch to them. Also kind of has some of that Battle Realms shine of units articulating combat with skills/mini-events, like the cyclops picking up men or even horses and just flinging them away.

Is there a way to give commands to a subgroup in a larger selection? Like giving only your siege units a target while having the whole army selected and letting the rest do whatever it is doing right now?

I've been double-clicking the unit archetype to highlight all of them.

I'm still trying to figure out how to lasso in an army and have it exclude civilians.

You can achieve this by the option Game->Gameplay->Easy Military drag-select. Tick this option and your select box will select military units only when it overlaps with villagers.

Played a game with a friend against some AI, FPS is a lot worse there - 30-70 FPS. Probably do need a GFX upgrade for smooth multiplayer. Wasn't unplayable, but not ideal.

Is the game even worth it on release? There seems to be a lot of oversights in the campaign and some people are reporting performance issues. Not to mention the rock textures in Egypt that look like a skin disease.

No. Get it on sale in a month or two. It's not worth full price ($30 - for comparison the other Definitive Editions started at $20 and gave a discount if you owned a copy of the originals on Steam)

Nearly everything Microsoft has done with Ensemble's games has been a case of trying to fix what wasn't broken. A few QoL fixes don't make up for the rest of the changes.

Yeah, I decided to wait for a discount and patches, especially after some people pointed out there are blatant oversights in the campaign due to the changes, which makes me think they either didn't play through the campaign or overlooked it. I was kind of hoping they improved the AI, but I don't think that's the case. That disgusting rock texture in Egypt doesn't help. I'll buy it eventually because I want to play competitive at some point, though.

I would wait anyway cause it's not worth $50. I think $30 is fair, though the game needs some bug fixed. I get weird hanging errors now and again, especially while navigating the save menu.

Seems like one of the better remakes on the first impression. Just played a couple of skirmish maps and it feels basically like the original. They removed one of my main gripes with the original, which was the population limit. The UI is a bit ugly, otherwise the visuals are pretty good. But I haven't touched the campaigns yet.

This is first RTS I will try to play on Xbox with a controller. I will report back if I killed myself as a result.. or someone else will report back.
