Looking forward to this. Havent tried AoW before but I like the civ/warlock overview + seperate TB combat.
Shame I cant find any cheapo cd keys or discounts.

Is it $40 for everyone?
In Poland pre-order price is close to 25$ but there is also region lock.

I figured there would be lower rates. Seeing steam gift discounts pop up now. Might go for $33 if nothing better shows up.

3 day until this launches. For me, this is the video game release of the year, but I am deeply worried about how much it resembles Warlock so far.

They had BETTER not fuck this up.

what do you mean by resembles warlock ? personally i m very excited too, havent been as excited for a game release in a long time and for the first time this century even ordered a collectors edition just because.

i did enjoy both Warlock and even FE:Legendary Heroes but they were nothing but fingerfood to wet my appetite whereas AOW3 looks like its shapening up to be a huge buffet for Master of Magic fans.

the only "negative" thing i can think of would be that the races are somewhat uninspired ( but in Warlock and FE:LH its even worse in that regard) - hopefully in an expansion we get more interesting stuff like in Master of Magic (klackons!,gnolls!) but i fear they already half-announced halflings .... ( what a boring race .... )

i even sold my sons souls to minecraft as a sacrifice to my new god notch for funding AOW3.

I have a feeling this is going to be pretty great, but of course I'll wait to purchase. The only thing I'm worried about is lack of content. From some of the LPs it seems there are only two campaigns at the start, and previous games had 4+. The length of those two campaigns might change that.

The random map generator holds promise, and ability to mod it, though we won't see anything good on the modding front for months. The only thing about the random map generator, is that AoW has never been "Civilization", so random maps don't generally work as well as a map with some scripted events/triggers thrown in.

Guess we'll see. I expect a few expansions/DLCs for sure.

Where are you seeing $33?

Hmm, how do they manage to undercut like that? I thought games in Australia were way more expensive, but they got cheap as shit stuff on there.

More to do with the site being a cd key reseller than a national store. I know if it was AAA marketed, the game would be $60 for us on steam.
Ive only gotten into these type of sellers recently, didnt trust them before but havent been burned yet. Basically search any game + cd key in google to find dodgy rates.

So they're the ones buying CD keys from cheaper areas (Russia/Ukraine etc.) and selling them there? Wouldn't this lead to issues of region locking or something like that?

Depends I suppose. They've probably worked it out somehow or only sell those that arent region locked.
I cant make guarantees being new to this sort of thing.

It would be great if someone who purchases it from that store could confirm that it's region free.

Don't use 3rd party sites for buying keys guys, Valve might ban you for that, or you can end up with a region locked key. Use steamtrades ( http://www.steamtrades.com/forum ) instead. All you have to do is to find a trustworthy seller (with positive reputation), who sells the game for cheap. You buy steam keys (around 1,7 euro each), and trade those keys for the game in a Steam Trade. A quick search resulted in 26 dollar offers for AoW 3.

That can happen only if you are an American or British and buy a game with a huge "Playable only in Poland" sticker plastered across the site.

In short - it's perfectly safe as long as you're not deliberately derpy.

Sure. Still Steamtrades can be even more cheaper.

Wouldn't these guys be likely to be selling the same keys you'd get from those very sites, though? Just sounds like more middlemen to me.

Maybe. It's just that Steam's terms of sevice forbids the use of 3rd party sites, and trading the game through the trade menu is a bit more legal, if I can call it this way. And at least you see the other guy, and you can see how realiable he/she is, this make it a bit more secure for me. But it is just my opinion. I also used 3rd party sites (once), and everything was OK with it. I just prefer trading now and think it as a bit more trustworthy way of purchase.

What are you even talking about? Steam's TOS forbids third-party sites? What in the world.

You CAN get banned for trying to subvert a region-lock, but that has nothing to do with where you obtain the key.

I'm assuming it's impossible to know the region of a CD key before you try it...?

It's impossible, but you won't get banned for trying to register a region-locked key from outside its region, that would be stupid. You'll just get an error message.

What I meant by "subvert", was using shit like Russian VPNs to activate the game, that's definitely bannable.

4players.de has a review that interestingly mentions the AI being really good and a good challenge even on "leicht" (=easy)... the reviewer goes as far as calling it "one of the best AI of the last years"

...now dont mistake me for believing the AI to be really as good as he claims - but it ll take it as a good sign that AI might at least not be completely retarded as in Warlock, Fallen Enchantress, AOW2 and well ... also Master of Magic.

You gotta distinguish two types of AI here - tactical and strategic. The prime example of a good tactical and bad strategic AI is Warlock. The opposite is true for Civ5 for instance.

From what I've seen of AoW3 AI I got the impression it's pretty competent on the strategic level but in the tactical battles is quite retarded. It's constantly bumrushing you without consideration for the green-yellow-orange system, it often zeroes in on some unit in the back of your army and mindlessly just go for it, aggroing several attacks of opportunity in the proces, it doesn't use spells and abilities efficiently and on and on. And those are only the issues that could be easily fixed in mind.

i havent played it. just quoting the review , which said the AI is good both on tactical level and strategic level - mind you i ve also read in a different review that its good on tactical and bad on strategic - i.e. the opposite of what you say. i ll see myself on monday of whos right or wrong and like i already said: i dont expect an actually good AI but anything above Warlock/Elemental/MoM/AoW2 would be very welcome so that review gave me hope :p

but i never understood people saying warlocks tactical AI is good. what do you mean by that since warlock has no tactical layer ? i imagine you mean its good at combat but bad at economy ? if so thats not what i experienced. i experienced it being godawful at both
and all my enjoyment of Warlock came from fighting the uberunits in the planes and later on dremers. and they were only challenging because they had really good stats - not because i remember them in any way behaving smart.
