It's not just an overall increase in light or brightness levels in the playback - where has the dark area to the right gone, and why?
Well a guy here claimed he managed to "fix" the "dark area" just by manipulating gamma, contrast and brightness in IrfanView. He posts a small image to back up this claim.

And here's the new screen with fixed brightness/contrast. And looks nearly the same for me. So? Do you a favor, lower your brightness settings and get all new realistic and complex shadowing system.

And if you hop around on your chair and hit the monitor with your face, it'll be mounted combat, right?

New info: the magical effect of blindness has been cut out from the game due to poor financial decisions. The game will display a "please turn your monitor off for 10 seconds" message every time an opponent blinds your character.

No, but seriously, it really looks good now.

The point was, Elwro, that those screenshots were taken with a high brightness setting.

Yeah, I know, I wrote sth like that 3 posts above. So it means perhaps that you can't play a thief in high brightness setting because you can't differentiate between shadowy and bright areas. Well, OK...
If the stealth mechanics are not nerfed, I can only be happy.

So they re-rendered all those exact same scenes, only on a newer build? Riiiight, and I'm the idiot here.

Re-rendered? This isn't Maya or 3D Studio Max. The scenes that are the same are scripted sequences that happen THE SAME FUCKING WAY EVERY TIME YOU PLAY. Jesus Christ, this is proof once again that you can't argue with a stupid person and win, because they refuse to accept the fact that they're stupid.

Go play some Tekken.

The thing is though, that according to the mighty pete, the video used in that trailer was supplied by Bethesda - as "B-roll" for cut n' paste. Why they give out tape with such varying quality is beyond me, but it probably adeqeuately reflects their problems with the shadow code...
Wow. Last night the TES forums were full of Beth defenders shouting "old build" and "unoptimized ini" constantly. Now we find Beth -provided- the video. Sheesh. Where are they gonna hide when the game comes out?

D4 - hiciacit is actually correct.

The footage in the German video was assembled by Bethesda and given to the Germans. It clearly comprises of some old footage and some new. You can tell it's old footage easily - because some NPCs do not have shadows. This was the case in the e3 video, where to improve the framerate, they switched off shadows in the town sequence. The shot of the town with a few NPCs walking around, looks very much like the identical sequence from the e3 video. Same with the fragment where you see a skeleton being taken out by a trap. It makes no sense for Bethesda to have re-run the game and captured what looks to be identical footage.

Hmm... Well, in that case, mea culpa. It appears that I'm the dumbass around here.

Hiciacit, flame away.

I just want to know why the emperor looks so bizarre.

The emperor is literally the face of Oblivion the one face of Oblibion re-used for every other character in the game. Sounds like it should be a very Bizzaro world , but at the same time a very warm place full of familiar faces. I guess it makes perfect sense to use a fat faceif you need to offset how thinly developed the characters are:D

I guess Bethesda forgot that emperors are supposed to be noble handsome knights in shining armor.......

- And instead, whilst retaining the most cliched of voices, gave him the face of a turtle.

Nay, darker areas are always darker than the rest. Obvious, isn;t it?

Yep. (btw: brightness and contrast on E3 video were totally f****d up, at least at my monitor, maybe that's the issue)

If by "darker areas" you mean "areas that should be darker than other areas because they have less light", than it's false, as you can see on one of the screens. One of the "darker areas" (the niche to the right of the emperor) is not visibly darker than the heavily - lit surroundings.
And if, on the other hand, you mean it literally, then congratulations! Learning how to form tautologies is the first step to logical thinking.
