Played the first mission of the demo. Not clear on why I couldn't pick which mech to use, given that has been much of the marketing material.

First impression is that guns are quite weak. The ranger (aka soldier-type in mass effect terms) had a rocket and a grenade with rather short cooldown that did 20-40x the damage of a single bullet in a large splash area. You could say that isn't representative of the gameplay, but if it isn't why did they set you at level 10 with this exact loadout for the demo?

Given the ability focus I want to try the class that specializes in it (storm javelin aka adept) but I have no indication if that is possible or how many hours away it is.

It's science fantasy, not sci-fi.
Doesn't have much in relation to mass effect at all

It's the same lousy mix of sci-fi and science fantasy that includes their worst elements and excludes their best.
Difference this time being that their writers lack even a modicum of talent and their most interesting ideas come from Marvel comic book movies.

The science fantasy term is retarded. Sci-fi is when it is about the future and about tech, fantasy when it is in the past and about magic. ME games was all about that tech and had no magic in it.

Space fantasy is perhaps more apt. Space as in space-age, not location: vacuum.

FO76 is infinitely worse than Andromeda, most of the people bashing Andromeda didn't even play it.
Andromeda isn't an unplayable buggy alpha mess and is actually a finished videogame. It wasn't great, but fuck it's nowhere near FO76.

I somewhat doubt Anthem is going to get anything more than a lethargic sigh. I'd like to be wrong, though. AAA entertainment these days is all about watching them crash and burn.

Andromeda provided enjoyment with how laughably bad the quality control was, it was in "so bad it's good" territory before they patched out all the good shit.

76 just looks boring. If it weren't for Bethesda PR repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot, people wouldn't be paying attention past the first month.

Here is a 2 hour gameplay footage of an actual gamer....even if casual whale.

It is amusing to see him get more negative when you skip trough the video :).

This thing has too many loading screens to enjoy. Clearly a console-first development process.

You can't even look at your inventory to equip a weapon without a loading screen. Refunded.

Science fantasy is the soft definition of sci-fi that contains element of fantasy such as (the list goes on):

Space magic (psionic powers occasionally get a pass if the setting sets up a decent scientific foundation for them)
Prophecies
Supernatural elements, superhuman powers (see also: space magic)
"Chosen ones"
God-like ancient evils

So let's see, Mass Effect doesn't have these? I'm sorry, but no. ME is as much a sci-fi as it is an RPG.

Other notable examples of Science Fantasy:

Star Wars
Star Trek
Babylon 5
...

It may sound like a retarded term to you, but to people that actually differentiate and care about subgenre distinction it tells a lot of what to expect about a novel/film/game.

I agree with your definition of Science Fantasy, but you gotta be kidding me.
Star Trek is pure Sci-fi. Yes, it has elements of gods, ascendant beings, telepathy, etc. But none of them are written off as "space magic", instead all of these are either higher technologies humans simply do not yet understand or evolution based.
There's nothing "magical" in Star Trek, everything has a scientific explanation (which is merely unknown to the protagonists).
Hell, even the Prophets in DS9 are not described as gods by anyone except most Bajorans, they are simply higher beings existing in non-linear time (which makes their words appear prophetic to others).

I think it is important to make a difference not only IF certain elements appear, but also how they are described/explained.
If you take something like Shadowrun, it is clearly sci-fi + fantasy, because its magical elements aren't "explained away". Magic is magic and that's about it, it's not a kind of evolution or technology not yet understood, but a thing of its own.
While Star Trek goes out of its way NOT to have anything be explained as magic.

Now, before I posted that, I actually checked:

The Star Trek franchise created by Gene Roddenberry is sometimes cited as an example of science fantasy. Writer James F. Broderick describes Star Trek as science fantasy because it includes semi-futuristic as well as supernatural/fantasy elements such as The Q.[6] According to the late iconic science fiction author, Arthur C. Clarke, many purists argue that Star Trek is science fantasy rather than science fiction because of its scientifically improbable elements, which he partially agreed with.[7]
