Arcanum Arcanum is, by far, one of the worst *games* I've ever played... emphasis on "game" and not "RPG"

I'm neither mad nor do i want my money back. I just think that's bad design of the game. Or do you think Arcanum is unflawed?

If you're getting fatigued just cast the spell that improves your constitution, the regen benefit outweighs the spell upkeep penalty. 20 CON gives you like a very high regen rate.

the real non existant balance; swords and sorcery are op but dare to play a gunslinger or tech build --> it's shit (you don't get good gun's till 2/3 into the game)
you are starting with lvl 4 at firearms, by lvl 3 you get grenades tech and a lot of int/quickness potions, lvl 6 mechanized gun, lvl 9 Hand Cannon, and last tech of gun smithy elephant gun at lvl 11
and few more lvls to max firearms... then you continue to bump explosives for things like stun grenades, etc.. at lvl 15 you can finish the game solo.
or if you combine guns with therapeutic techs, then its even more easier. basically, guns combined with any other tech tree is OP.

so, what the fuck are you were talking about, 2/3 of the game?

Hard for me to pan a game I could barely play for a few minutes.

Case in point.

BTW, find some shitty excuses to complain about the Thief games next. They're a Codex favorite.

Why is it always 12, when somebody says that.

Because he's very clearly only 13 now, so he beat the game last year. Ignore him. People around here don't tend to get

tags unless they really deserve it. Barely worth your time responding.

Of course potions and grenades are good, but i just want to use firearms/weaponsmithing.
My complain about balancing is, that skilling firearms and gun smithy is far worse than just skilling melee and smithy (balanced sword).
Also i don't find the mechanized gun and the hand cannon that good for the bullets they waste.
With a high firearms skill the fine revolver has a better damage per bullet ratio in my opinion.
The real update are the tesla gun and the warbringer until to that point i consider the fine revolver a good choice. (speed-, damage- and bulletwise)

Quality revolver is definitely on the level of balanced sword if not better - you need to have at lease some melee skill and armor to be dedicated melee, but any character in Arcanum can do some damage from range.
For me LGR was always a weapon of choice till Warbringer, but they nerfed it to 20-40 I think, so Elephant Gun became a desired goal for techies, although it's hard to get to unless you go full doctorate which means picking +6 INT perk - then you can quickly master more than one tech disciplines even in Tarant, at the expense of all else. Balanced techies would have to rely on Fate point to steal something for themeselves, like a hand cannon (but it's more of a situational weapon, 20 INT 0 con character won't survive easily using it).

So imo a problem there is no middle game gun that is on the level of melee or magic.

To me Arcanum felt like someone in the late stage of development said: "Guys, this is great, but it's supposed to be an RPG, and those have lots of combat and experience grinding. We need hundreds dead bodies by the end. Go, stretch it out a bit and add some fucking dungeons like every proper RPG has." Making the most compelling "class" of the game the weakest was just an insult on top.
There was another game, called Inquisitor, that pretty much repeated everything Arcanum got both right and wrong. First I was delighted by the conversations and available options, then I left the initial town and just quit because of unbearably shitty combat. God mode just replaced anger with boredom.

But I don't really get all the "inconvenience" criticism. The items themselves and the dubious usefulness of many of them was the real problem when it comes to inventory.
When an RPG lets me deal only with the "cool" stuff and automates the rest, I feel like a foreigner on a guided tour. I like arranging my inventory in the same way I like to arrange my music library, instead of letting some crappy media player do it for me.
"Thanks, alphabet, but I'd really like to have the heavy healing potion listed AFTER the medium one."

Just try to imagine gradually adding every single convenience function anyone can think of. Whole aspects of the game will lose their point and this is what you will end up with:

-No inventory. Quest items are managed by the game and automatically used when needed. Consumables have a belt with slots. All new equipment is put straight on your character with a message "You now have a better weapon" etc., and beyond that you only gain gold. Selling crappy loot was an useless time sink anyways.
-No journal, only quest log where you can switch what quest you want your compass to navigate you to. Every literate monkey can read instructions and follow them, another time sink gone.

If you were to listen to really edgy posters, might as well add this:
-Skippable dialogs, those are for storyfags and not RPGers. Just show me the next tactical challenge. (not all that applicable for Arcanum, but rather frequent otherwise)
-Skippable combat, that's for combatfags and not RPGers. Just let me make more story-relevant choices.

I'm getting a bit over the top here, but I hope you can see my point.

Inquisitor is a diablo-like de facto and I don't believe it can be played with a non-combat char. Arcanum is perfectly soloable without killing anyone except bunch of guards in front of Kerghan's castle.

I'm not sure why people always are so hating towards Arcanum's mobs&grinding. Tarant sewers as all other sewers in Arcanum are shit, but they're also completely irrelevant to the main game.

mechanized gun is OP, if you have problems with ammo, then tech build is really not your choice
Maybe i played another game, but i had really a problem with bullets for the first 15 hours. (with creating my own bullets)
Cause i didn't take melee which seems to be necessary in the start of the game.
Then after that the mechanized gun tends to waste to many bullets for a target, whereas with my revolver i can determine how much i use.
Also the damage of the mechanized gun isn't worth it. It just leads going back to a shop and stealing bullets more often.
that is about 14 lvl char if you are combining electric + gun smithing
That fast? Don't know maybe i just played like shit. I remeber skilling gun smithy/electric/chemistry (for the bullets) and pickpocketing for bullets/healing stuff. It worked as a build, but could be that i've chosen the most annoying build possible.

When i think about it, i just thought the game would be more similar to Fallout in how it handled the balance between melee and guns.
But sadly it wasn't.
Could it be the most complains about Arcanum come from it not just beeing Fallout in Steampunk?

How much viable is that without prior knowledge? I may give it another try, unless it means reading FAQs and pre-planning my route.
I remember that awful "mines" dungeon standing in my way, I eventually got through, but it was a pain.

I haven't played too much of inquisitor and I didn't finish Arcanum. They just both intrigued me dialogue and lore-wise, and then repulsed with their overabundant and not at all enjoyable combat.

The awful mines dungeon can be ran past through all enemies in TB mode.
Arcanum gives you enough tools to avoid any enemies, from level 1 nature spell to stealth, conveyance mental & phantasm schools, as well as potions.

Companions might get in the way tho, but with companions & charisma you don't even need to click on enemies yourself.

I watched the intro onyoutube, fond it really cool and bought it one year ago. But I never had the time to play it. THing is I really don't like RTwP, d is it an auxilliary TB system for a RTwP game or the opposite ? Actually which combat system did the dev have in mind originally ?

Both suck so i doesn't matter, at least combat is not difficult at all i don't remember that i had any issues with that. Game is pretty long though and you'll encounter a lot of enemies.

they tried to do both,as if to pleasure both battle school fans, but it seems they run out of development time before they had a chance to fine tune them.
i find turn based better if you play ranged.
