I play many fine games that excel at both storytelling and gameplay. I pray at the altar of From Software afterall. Maybe you people just have shit taste.

So, after around 6 years, I'm finally nearing the end of my 16-bit console based gaming playthrough. During that time I have also played some RPGs from later eras, so I included them on my list also. Here's the RPGs I delved into in that time...

Shining Resonance Refrain
Bahmut Lagoon
Terranigma
Seiken Densetsu 3
Phantasy Star 2
Secret of Mana
SMT1
Wonder Project J
Mystic Ark
GOD
Glory of Heracles IV
Earthbound
Fire Emblem 4: Genealogy of the Holy War
Breath of Fire 2
Dragon View
Brain Lord
FEDA: The Emblem of Justice
Alcahest
Front Mission
Tales of Phantasia
Super Monster Shell Story
Super Mario RPG
Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
Soul Blazer
7th Saga
Star Ocean
Ys 8
Eternal Filena
Sword of Vermillion
Magic Knight Rayearth
Super Ninja Boys
Metal Max Returns
Breath of Fire
Rise Eternia
Secret of Evermore
Robotrek
Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen
Final Fantasy X-2
Lagoon
EVO Search For Boredom
Phantasy Star 4
Shining Force 2
Final Fantasy 5
Langrisser 2
Final Fantasy X
Valkyria Chronicles 4
Final Fantasy 7
Landstalker
Lufia 2
Final Fantasy 4
Warsong (Der Langrissa)
Shining Force
Illusion of Gaia
Chrono Trigger
Phantasy Star 3
Dark Souls
Cadash
Beyond Oasis/Story of Thor
Starflight
Buck Rogers - Countdown to Doomsday
Shadowrn MD
Shadowrun SNES
Baldurs Gate
Dark Souls 2
Greedfall
Technoclash
Light Crusader
Fallout 4
Sorcerer's Kingdom
The Outer Worlds
Ultima VII: The Black Gate
Techmo Secret of The Stars
Saints Row 4

...And after that experience I can 100% hand on heart honestly sat that Gameplay simply MUST come first. Obviously a game needs both story & gameplay to be crafted to an acceptable level to be enjoyable, but when the stories became bad I found I could still play on regardless and still enjoy it to some degree. However, when the gameplay became bad it usually just killed the experience flat dead.

There's a lot of highly praised RPGs in there such as Star Ocean and EVO Search for Eden which to me were fucking painful to play because of the dire gameplay (honestly, I have EVO down as one of the worst games I've ever played, yet go to a console or RPG group and folk suck it off loads), and I wouldn't wish them on anyone.

My new Laptop should be on it's way in the next few weeks, and then I can at last start delving back into the PC stuff thank God. I need to wash all the sour shit SNES stuff away from my being. Amazing to think that console has a reputation as being THE king of RPG systems.

Immersionfag, which usually ends up being more gameplay than story. If the game mechanics feel totally arbitrary, abstracted, irrelevant to the setting, then I just can't get into it. The game part is there to permit me to act out a part in a story, and the more the stats permit my character to become some kind of super-human freakshow totally out of place in the setting, the less rewarding it is to invest time and energy into it. The vast majority of RPGs fail this test. It doesn't mean they can't be fun in their own ways, but that isn't enough to bring me back down the road.
