You just don't understand the appeal of first-person dungeon crawling, Lilura.

The most monocled isometric RPGs (Jagged Alliance 2, Arcanum, Fallout etc.) have more reactive exploration than blobbers, which have no strong-points at all unless you think derping around in mazes is fun.
Go and play Might and magic games instead of bitching retarded shit.

Lilura has occasional pearls of wisdom to share with us. I have very conflicted feelings about Lilura, to be honest. I either strongly agree with some of her posts or vehemently disagree with others.

Lilura is doing well lately. I could swear someone must have had a talk with her. But that's pretty unlikely...

Why not both?

Planescape Torment proved what happens when you go full storytard.

Meanwhile, I don't think Legend of Grimrock has won any Pulitzers.

We're still awaiting that game that will combine superior story + amazing combat, but it's a long, hard wait. Maybe Cyberpunk!!!!! Amirite?

Gameplay fag but I need to good story/ premise at the very least to care. Otherwise it goes into arcade territory. Gameplay centric arcade games are still more forgettable than a game with a decent story/ premise and alright gameplay.

Witcher 3 with absolute garbage gameplay is still more preferable to Final Fantasy Lightning Returns even though the latter has significantly better gameplay.

Amazing gameplay can overtake awful story

Amazing story can make me play mediocre gameplay

But amazing story can't make me play a broken game / awful gameplay.
says the guy who was Disco Elysium as his location
:kingcomrade:
disco has not awful gameplay., it has no gameplay.

no gameplay is much better than awful gameplay

To me a game must be extraordinary at something and to this day I never saw a game that made me think "Jesus, that story was so good that justified the sacrifices made.", usually cinematic games are a huge waste of time, the interactivity sucks and in the end, the best part, you get a story that would be a fit for a mediocre Netflix adaptation at best.

Yes, there are games like New Vegas, Torment and Bloodlines with shitty combat and not the most amazing stories ever made but those games are extraordinary in worldbuilding and I think the best "storyfag" games are the ones that use the interactivity provided by videogames instead of trying to be mediocre TV series.

Always thought I was a storyfag, but apparently that means I should like Witcher 3 and its "amazing writing".

I just adopted the term atmosphere fag, if I can get sucked into the world (story counts here, long winded dialogues like in W3 don't count), then I love it. I think Gothic's story is shit, meanwhile W1 story was pretty good to great overall, and I love them similarly. Thus, atmosphere fag.

there's a difference between a story and good writing. the story in witcher 3 is a dude trying to find some chick. boring.

I agree, but I've seen too many comments attributing those who like W3 being "story fags", which I don't agree with, so I just settled on atmopshere fag.

Doom is a great example of this. Doom's premise is very thematically strong, with the lone space marine going up against legions of hell on a faraway moon, and the way you slowly descend further into hell as you progress through the game is really cool. Without this premise/story, Doom would not have nearly the amount of cultural impact it has today, much like its successor Quake which - though it had superior gameplay in many ways - had a much weaker premise. John Carmack's famous quip about porn is just wrong.

For an RPG example, Ultima 4 is a one big collectathon, but the context of being an adventurer climbing over mountains and sailing across oceans to discover long-lost mythical artifacts makes it feel like a real adventure, despite it having a very sparse plot.

Not that big of a deal, Quake is the best competitive FPS in history so fuck having a premise at all, that game is pure, beautiful gameplay.

That's true, but if they put a little more effort into the story, then Quake might be renowned for its singleplayer as much as it is for its multiplayer.
