I have enough shekels left over from a Vampire bloodlines purchase for either Avadon 2 or Underrail. Thoughts ?
I will bet on Underrail.

Bought it. Playing on hard as a tinkermage. Played past the first keep and its surrounding areas. A lot more interesting than the initial maps of Avadon; which is not difficult to achieve, frankly. Still, nothing exceptional yet.

On hard I find some fights a challenge and some seem to be impossible -- I'll have to come back.

Fun!

Tough one; Underrail might wind up being the better game, but it's not out yet. I reckon you ought to buy Avadon, and then pick up Underrail later when it's actually released as a full game.

Might? Underrail is already infinitely more fun in its current state.

In an ideal world hed just make a game based on the Ubbel Blatt manga.
Lul wat? Do we really need ANOTHER game about "the best of the best at the youngest age", but now with a pseudo-grimdark twist where he is anti-hero? Oh, wait, he isn't! Twist again, he's the good guy! Hurray, we just escaped from having any drop of originality on our setting!

Go read BERSERK, at least that's badass, not a fairy-boy fighting other kids with AWESHUM powars.

It did. I adressed this only because of Echo Mirage's question.

Oh wow, how did I miss this gem. You seriously need to start playing more RPGs.

Hah, that's coming from a forum of Torrent and Arcanum fans. This place has some pretty terrible taste at times.

Anyway, Underrail does look good, I just think it is a good idea to hold off until it's finished and play Arcanum 2 in the meantime. I played an hour or two of the Avadon 2 demo and it is better than the original Avadon. I agree with everyone that says Avadon is a pretty bland/decline setting compared to Geneforge and Nethergate.

It is really a problem when people cant into reading. look into the setting, the world, that is the strength of ubbel blatt, and that is what im recommending.

Oh ffs, you're what, 12? Is this your first manga ever? Please, enlighten me on how Ubbel Blatt has a awesome and original setting, and not a shitty pseudo-grimdark version of every fantasy world out there.

Insert Title Here RPG Wokedex Codex Year of the Donut I'm very into cock and ball torture
You know, if there were no manga there also would be no Carl Barks - after all, manga was created by mimicking Carl Barks' drawing style. To make sure manga would never have been created, its inspiration - Carl Barks - would have to be eradicated as well.

And denying Carl Barks' comics were a cultural treasure - well, now, that is plain silly; it is like saying Brothers Grimm's fairy tales are devoid of literary or artistic worth, eh?

I for one applaud the addition of romance options. Now we just need gay romances and Jeff Vogel will accomplish his dream and get hired by Bioware and we can finally be free of his shit. Huzzah.

I'm not denying manga, far from it, I really enjoy some. But Ubbel Blatt is just pure shit, it reads like "Berserk meets Final Fantasy IX, by David Gaider".

To put it simply? Game of thrones meets berserk meets thief 2. The biggest difference is that this is all set in an age of apparent light, where knights go around helping people as if they were paladins, completely loyal to their lords.
While their lords are a bunch of cowards and murderers that will stop at nothing to gain power, while concealing this fact, all of them bound by a common sin. Thing is, they are real people, they love their families, they enjoy their lives and are not mustache twirling villains.
The emperor is elected by a group of families instead of being an hereditary title, and the emperor is old and tired and the time for a new head is coming.
Also, nature has not been tamed, dragons and other kind of powerful beasts roam the wilderness.
Add to that the fact that the strongest magic is controlled by demi human abominations on the other side of the frontier. That there is a holy wall of fire separating both sides that could go down at any minute.
The empire is highly militarized and could mirror the organization of armies in the current times. Magic and technology fused to create things like flying vessels, and some beasts have been tamed, like wyrms, which make the battles mostly an aerial deal, with sound strategies and logistics for the most part.
Jesus, near the frontier 3 lords rule over this desertic region (it is hinted that the war destroyed the flora of the region) with an iron fist, in the most brutal way possible, and they are given free roam because no one gives a shit about the place, its too far from the capital and no real citizens live there, only refugees from the war.

It is a world thats about power, betrayal, politics, religion and war. This setting would make for really interesting story telling no matter the protagonist, because it is that good, it is that original, it is one of the few settings with some of these characteristics that ive seen where the existence of an adventuring makes sense.

Any setting is shit without good characters.
The characters are the strength of that setting, every single one of them (the important players, and lots of the side characters) has a well defined personality, motivation and backstory. Not only that, most of them have growth, i mean, actual character development!
Plus the drawings are gorgeous.

As i said, its a bit pretentious, but definitely worth a read.

Just to contextualize other posters here, the main character of this manga was declared the best swordsman of the world when he was 12 or something. And he +3 other kids saved the entire world from a evil empire of doom. But then they were betrayed by 7 other kids, each one representing a deadly sin.

SUCH DEEPNESS AND AWESOMENESS!

Actually he was the only kid, the rest of the group were all adults. Also they are all in their 30s at the start of the manga, everyone but the protagonist that is in his 20s. The other blatt master is also a kid tho, in his 17s, which tells me that the talent required to achieve that position is so great that trumps pretty much every other factor, including physical strength or experience, because it is pure perfect technique.
Also, stop playing the retard, never made any mention of the depth of the story (which is pretty good, considering it raises questions about duty to your lord and duty to the people, or rampant nepotism, and a whole lot of other issues that are handled in an adult fashion). It is awesome tho, because its a setting carefully put together that has a lot of potential. Moreso than any other fantasy setting ive read about.

Severian Silk Game looks like ass but im digging the feel of it, will try it this weekend.

I don't see any compelling reason to add this to my backlog when I have yet to play any Geneforge.

... that's sort of elusive because the author keeps retconning art style so you aren't sure how design ranges with age. Like the main protagonist looks 15 but he and his main rival are supposed to be 20 or something. That was more obvious with the original drawings of the 14 Lances, but I get the impression the author started regretting making the protagonist look 15 (in present time) so he had to redraw the other Lances in the flashbacks so he could resell 15 as 20.

Apparently people in this world look like they're 15 when they're in their 20s and then suddenly jump to full grown men in their 40s.

Also, shuddup about the anime.

We sort of have to. Since the main thrust of the thread is that most of us aren't going to give this game a chance we have to stretch out the conversation with as many comparisons as we can.

If you won't even try out the free demo before bad mouthing/giving up on avadon 2, then you kind of deserve to be stuck with a thread full of animes.
