Obsidian is going out the wrong way, producing somewhat profitable (I don't know how) McDonalds level shit.

No, I think it's just regular PB shit. They are one of my favorite devs all time, but they were always up and down. Made 2 masterpieces in Gothic 1 and 2, followed up with some bland shit in Gothic 3, returned go glory with Risen, followed up with 2 turds in R2 and 3. Then same pattern with ELEX.

Made you just need a certain magic to make special games, and that artistic magic is best nurtured in environments devoid of discipline or organization. Which leads to results of varying quality. I don't know.

There's likely a necessity to have the same team and level of motivation each time to truly build off of the success of a previous title.

For what it was, Pillars of Eternity wasn't the worst game I played and I liked the somber tone. It could be dry at times but it had some cool parts like the district in the big city that was overrun by the undead. I love stuff like that.

I remember reading interviews about the sequel being made 'less dark' which made me not bother with it. Then Avowed was clearly meant to be dark and serious in tone with its initial reveal but the final product ended up as anything but and written in that awful style where all the characters communicate in sassy quips.

When I liked fantasy it had the tone of Conan films, or the excellent fantasy movie wolfhound from 2006. The world was harsh, plagues rampant, the coomonfolk unforgiving, bandits killed with impunity, took their enemies women and enslaved the children.

The evils of the world had truly dark intentions, which added to the stakes, you were invested to see the hero exact their revenge on the evil doers of the world and save the day.

These new games are so watered down, safe space boring slop.. its so pathetically bad in 2025. Shit used to awesome, people in 2025 cannot separate fiction from reality and now most media is absolute garbage.

Everything after the first Pillars was just one big over correction. From what I've seen they're just sticking with the direction and tone Deadfire gave us which is a shame.

I haven't played the game, but what puts me off is the Star Trek style of non-human races in the game. I watched someone play on a stream, and all of the non-human races were just humans in makeup, like old Star Trek episodes. There is no effort to create anything that doesn't allow re-use of the motion-captured animations and default human skeletons in these games. I can see them designing everything around these budget decisions without creative solutions. If they can't figure that out, I doubt they are creative enough to make an interesting game world.

Budget decision is making a mantis make it an intelligent, and let it walk around as character in the party. Like what can a young liberal fresh out of college who has an easy office job and who hates low income that are getting any money from state... What can a young liberal do?

Obviously they are able to screw it up REALLY BAD.

We are living in new millennium. In year 30K there is war brewing, emperor is dead, males are becoming females, females are becoming males, there are gay parades on streets, and children are taught that people with darker skins have more rights than original population, owners of companies are controlling the country and altering laws to increase theirs profits even more and slowly turning country into poverty, and we have paid people who were willing to make the above art without thinking that something is wrong.

Before I'm done writing this post there will be another 20 metroidvania soulslikes released, but hardly any game has ever tried to out-skyrim Skryim. I feel like these games are harder to make than most codexers realize, and developers don't like making them as much as players want to buy them.

I agree any next-level game will have to out-skyrim Skyrim. But that would take Pyramids of Giza levels of slavery. Only Rockstar is ethically grey enough to get anywhere near that. No way Bethesda does it, the horse has left that barn.

Content-wise, it's looking more and more like it's going to take nothing less than AI to get there.

Unreal engine slop, like Avowed, is just more noise before that finally happens.

Can I play it on 4 core with 1660 Super? (Underclocked to half speed because I want zero noise during gaming.) If not, it's basically ELEX like graphic running at 1/3 of ELEX speed. (Because I can run ELEX at full speed with underclocked GTX 1660 Super.)

They tried to make a game of bigger scope while barely expanding the team. Elex was literally made with 30 people. Elex 2 with around 35. Basically a typical Piranha Bytes cycle, where they would "return to the root", make something better received then blow themselves in the foot by trying to make something too big.
