My question regarding all of this, since I'm considering buying it - is MCA's presence felt at all?

MCA didn't write anything for this game. He just got an early version and sent them a few pages of feedback. And later told everyone he liked what he played.

Well, this doesn't bode well. He has a tendency to sugarcoat his opinions as well.

Ugh, he should be more like Pierre Boulez, who jumped up at the end of premiers to yell "SHIT!!!" when it was shit. He also never said "this would be better with more trannies". Oh well, so much for that.

Okay, claims of mansplaining may have been slightly exaggerated by someone with a chip on his shoulder.

That's a coastline, impossible.

Beamdog have moved some areas on the map. This is how you access the lighthouse map now.

Thanks, I finally got there by using the console and cheat which took me 30 minutes to enable because they switched over to Baldur.lua and while the ini is still there, modifying it doesn't do anything.

All in all it took me more than an hour getting to the lighthouse. Good times.

aVENGER, do enemy spellcasters do SCS-style prebuffing under Insane difficulty?

Depends on the encounter.

For the most part, spellcasters in SoD only pre-cast spells which have a very long duration (8+ hours) like Armor, Stoneskin or Melf's Minute Meteors. Beyond that, enemy mages can use spell sequencers/triggers/contingencies to put up additional defenses, but only if they are legally allowed to cast them (i.e. an enemy needs to be at least a level 7 mage in order to use Minor Spell Sequencer). However, for a couple of specific encounters where enemies are aware that a battle is imminent (due to plot reasons) they do pre-cast a few more spells.

And just out of curiousity, does any of that change under Legacy of Bhaal?

No, Legacy of Bhaal just boosts enemy stats (THAC0, hit points, saving throws etc.)

Enemy AI doesn't scale above the "Insane" difficulty setting.

Man, this game must be really good if all that's worth complaining about is an inconsequential NPC and some UI changes.

A good example of a mage encounter was Davaeorn in vanilla BG1, as described in the Boss Encounter section of this post. I mean, at least the guy was scripted for mobility...

Also, it's not really prebuffing but a simulation of it - and a pretty ham-fisted one, at that.

I couldn't give a fuck less about some random npc in their game. But don't touch BG1.
Existing content has already been cut or changed. If you don't like it WELL2BAD.

If that doesn't bother you then you are part of the problem.

It's called professional politeness, something Tim Cain managed to super-humanly pull off when commenting on Fallout 3.

What's there to be bothered about when Baldur's Gate is a separate game that exists and works perfectly well? You don't even need the GOG installer because the old game runs fine and there's plenty of mods for it. That's not a rhetorical question, I'm curious what you're referring to.

If this is good, then I might consider getting it and the necessary Enhanced Edition at some point. If it's bad and ugly, then whatever, nothing changes. I'm more suspicious of the upcoming merging of the classic and Enhanced Baldur's Gates into a single bundle.

I think this means you won't be able to buy the original games on their own now. It's fucking ridiculous, since every game costs half of the EEs' prices. This only tells that Beamdog got salty their versions never sold really well on GOG.

On the bright side, it's possible that the merger also means that original BG1 and BG2 will be added to BG1:EE and BG2:EE on Steam, which is cool.
