How often you played any of this instead of city of 1001 liches?
Sadly, most high level modules for D&D and CRPG adaptations are H&S heavy. Few modules focus on "civilization building" for example. If I had enough resources, I would develop a CRPG where most of the spells that you can use are good for out of combat situations. But on World of Darkness, the Tremere clan uses his magic for non combat related stuff mostly of the time. Their initial powers on path of the blood(thaumaturgy) is all about information gathering.
However, Veiled Alliance in Dark Sun, is a group of wizards using subterfuge, infiltration and guerrilla tactics against the sorcerer kings cuz they have no chance in a frontal assault. I wish that I could play 2e as one of then. And BTW, most of the members of Veiled Alliance are mid level, not high level ones. Honestly, if they could just outpower the tyrant with raw magical power, a campaign of Alliance VS Tyrant would become far less interesting.
Not everything in a book translates well into a game. Different mediums are governed by different rules. That said, you can make a game that reflects a book as closely as possible, but it's much more difficult than focusing on "just" making a good game in the setting. The real challenge lies in making a game fun and interesting.
But can you name an example of "bad translation" from a book into game mechanics?
What are you doing trying to one shot goblins with burning hands if you were supposed to be casting Glitterdust and buffing like a proper 'God' Wizard?
Charm, sleep and similar spells are amazing. On Dark Sun : Shattered Sands, I barely used any offensive spell. Used my magic mostly to buff my half giant and to "disable" enemies. To solo Baldur's Gate 1 as a magic use, you will use this spells most of the time. There are times that I had ZERO offensive spells memorized and was using one enemy vs another.
But on BG3, sleep and similar spells are worthless due hp bloat.
I can't see archfey and GOO pact being viable to warlocks on BG3 too. Fiend pact which is all about damage would be the most used. And wizards would only pick evokation. 5e already nerfed too much this sleep, charm and etc spells. BG3 nerfed then even more...

Backl to BG3.

Initially the player may just be staving off imminent disaster as Cyric and his friends move quickly against the player – several strong deities against a relatively weak one. I could imagine the player being forced to abandon the Throne of Bhaal and going on the run across the planes. The player’s goal would be to gain followers (faith=power), usurp the divine portfolio of another god, and carve out a base of power in the wider multiverse. Your journey could take you to some of the planes we’ve never visited in a CRPG – Mount Celestia, Limbo, and Mechanus, for example – as well as revisiting old favorites like Sigil, though seeing the City of Doors through the eyes of a minor deity could be a very different experience. In a divine-level planar campaign, the player might stir up a civil war on Mount Celestia, conquer a layer of the Abyss, or assemble an adventuring party of divine avatars. Ultimately you’d take back the Throne of Bhaal, smack down Cyric and his friends, and establish a place for yourself among the pantheon of gods.
