They're a part of the player's own emergent story.Romance in CRPGs is what romantic comedies are to movie genres. It's not, nor should it be, a genre. All romance is, is a plot device to move the story forward.
By your logic, side quests shouldn't exist, since everything needs to be to move the main plot forward.
RPGs aren't linear stories like films or books. Or they shouldn't be, at least.
