You don't need items when the best strategy is magic missile spam, it doesn't matter.

I must agree, I tend to use Magic Missle effectively in all AD&D\D&D games ....especially on higher levels like in BG2:ToB

So how is the itemization in this game?

In nutshell, not as great as BG2 nor awful like DOS2. Magical items are one of the things that are very lackluster in 5E but at least is not Diablo 3 stat stickie style magical items.

Easily worse than D3 -

No game has worse itemization than diablo 3. Seriously. Is pure stat stickie and gear check walls. Was a huge decline compared to D2 itemization.

The biggest change they introduced so far is that each weapon type gives you one or two active abilities you can use in place of your standard attack, which I think is a much needed addition in a 5E videogame, considering how quickly things can get boring for a martial character.

That I strongly agree and also think that they should have added more options for martials at higher levels and more unique proprieties from the items, similar to previous games. For eg, a mace/hammer that when hits the enemy must make a FORT CON save or be stunned. Boots that increases your running speed allowing you to run more per round and so on.

Yes. Exactly the same as DOS2, except D3 has more uniques, sets and even more diverse affixes. Which is incredible considering how shit D3's itemization is
