Mystra offers to restore Gale's soul post-transformation, which leads us to believe that either he doesn't have one, or Mystra is a giant liar, just like Jergal. However, the way she phrases her offer is "Hey, Gale, do you want to get your soul back and go to paradise?", and not, "Hey, you horrific abomination wearing Gale's skinsuit, I am restoring my boytoy's mind and soul, fuck you", which implies she still views him as the same person.

I doubt that Larian put too much thought in the metaphysics of it all, but I guess you could justify it from the perspective of retained consciousness if your atypical mindflayer transformation led to that happening. And if the transformation makes you lose your soul, then what Mystra is offering is to reunify it with your body (since as a worshipper of Mystra, Gale's soul was headed to her realm anyway).

Even before Larian, the lore had illithid liches. How can you be a lich with no soul?

I understand RA Salvatore released a book that had some additional Viconia "lore" in 2005, but I'm not aware of any actual mention of her age in any work.

Personally, I think it's more purposeful uglification by the woke devs.

Same with Jaheira, really. They could have kept her young with magic despite her ancestry. The game even tells you this. But at least it's believable and understandable in her case.

Again, it's was a mistake to include characters from the original games. But 5E lore is garbage that mostly digs up 2E and 3E lore and gives its own crappy spin on it, so it's consistent. And BG3 was ruined ever since Wizards decided to use the novelizations, which I doubt most people read, as canon.

On the wiki I found only one date 1297 which is the destruction of House DeVir.
I found nothing to suggest Viconia's age except that she must have been born long before this year. I think it's safe to assume she should be at least 250 years old.
I think it's even more because surely House DeVir was destroyed after she left Underdark.
As a reminder, Decent into Avernus is 1492.

I think it's even less so that and more that facial technology is still so nascent as to make attractive characters with consistent emoting difficult.

All the way back in 2011 LA Noire hyped up that facial mo-cap technology, but it was still really rough around the edges.

Since then tech has tried to use digital, mo-cap and AI in conjunction with mixed results.

The only game in the last 10 years to have halfway decent looking people was Witcher, and that had very little facial expressionism.
