The Bard's Tale was the first CRPG I played, shortly after my parents got us an Apple IIc. I eventually played II and III, all on the Apple IIc. Awesome series. Much nostalgia. I feel a 'shut up and take my money' moment coming on.

Is not like they are giving those for free, you can bet EA gets a nice cut from all of those games. They got a smart executive, not a bro one.

From what I understand from talking to Brother None, they're not taking a cut. Though I imagine he doesn't want to comment on this publicly.

Eh, I once speculated that Microsoft gave HBS Shadowrun and EA gives Fargo etc, etc because they want these indie developers to re-establish dead brand names. Ergo, Fargo spins out Wasteland game, sells a 1,000,000+ on PC and consoles, and there you go. EA has the Fallout competitor that Fargo initially pitched but they didn't want to take a risk on. Same thing with Shadowrun. Microsoft gutted the franchise with the first person shooter, so they're allowing HBS to re-establish the brand name.

Sort of like how Interplay established Fallout into something Bethesda could spin into a 5,000,000+ sales cash machine.

Ha. It reminds me of Ed Harris from Snowpiercer, whispering into Chris Evan's ear about the inevitability and beautiful utilitarianism of the class structure and how struggling against it only strengthens its grip over humanity. Fargo makes edge lords think they're in a revolution against publishers, but really both ends of the train are cooperating with each other. Fargo is the Engineer who is making sure both the edge lords of the Codex and the consoletards are working together to drive the train of the video gaming industry through the unchanging cycles of its eternal voyage.

Well, conspiracies aside, EA bought out a huge number of beloved nerd franchises/companies in the 90s in order to secure a competitive advantage against Ubisoft/Activision and only ended up burning everything to the ground and pissing everyone off. The closest they can come to rebuilding a beloved franchise is the recent Dungeon Keeper for tablets; they just don't have enough nerd cool to rebuild a franchise like Wasteland or Bard's Tale from the ground up.

Even Fargo can't make the casual crowd want to buy 5,000,000 copies of a Unity turn-based RPG, but he can popularize the Wasteland brand name enough that EA can find someone to make it into a Fallout 3/New Vegas clone.

Be funny if it was Obsidian.

As for Microsoft ... well, they've got to start somewhere.

Eh, lowest game bid at $25, and it's an early bird. After that, only $33, with that no-so-witty-anymore "I forgive you for pirating" tier.

To think W2 could be bought for $15. Each InXile Kickstarter raised in $5 the minimun bid for a game. I get their angle, but at some point it bemoces more interesting for consumers to wait and see.

From what I understand from talking to Brother None, they're not taking a cut. Though I imagine he doesn't want to comment on this publicly.

I think Fargo said publicly he didn't have to give EA anything to use the Wasteland universe or to include Wasteland 1.

I imagine he does have to sell his games on Origin, but that's hardly a big deal.

Eh, I once speculated that Microsoft gave HBS Shadowrun and EA gives Fargo etc, etc because they want these indie developers to re-establish dead brand names. Ergo, Fargo spins out Wasteland game, sells a 1,000,000+ on PC and consoles, and there you go. EA has the Fallout competitor that Fargo initially pitched but they didn't want to take a risk on. Same thing with Shadowrun. Microsoft gutted the franchise with the first person shooter, so they're allowing HBS to re-establish the brand name.

Sort of like how Interplay established Fallout into something Bethesda could spin into a 5,000,000+ sales cash machine.

It's a pretty fair reflection of overall value. Steam gets 30% and tax man gets 10%, so for a $45 game the developer keeps $25, thereabouts. So basically a KickStarter backer is spared the costs of distribution.

Figuratively speaking, since these games lose 10% between KickStarter and payment processing.

I don't understand people balking at $25 for the digial buy-in. Don't encourage the "race to the bottom" of game pricing. Considering the game will probably retail for at least $40, that's still a considerable discount. If you want quality games made - be willing to put forth the cash to make it happen. This isn't some tiny unproven indie studio. From what they describe this will have much more advanced graphics - and you know what - quality artists who can do that stuff decently don't come cheap.

That setting the price at $15 for KS backers hurts them in the long run, as people feel a bit cheated buying it at $40 upon release. "OMG, that's more than twice the KS price, you greedy fucks!" By closing the gap between KS and release price, things go more smoothly and they get some nice extra $$$ upfront... or they can go and release it for $60 afterwards without so much drama.

HOWEVER, Wasteland 2 is currently being sold for 72 reais here on HUEHUEHUE Steam. That's 23 dollars, less than what they are asking for a game I don't know if it will suck and that I'll likely only play 2 years from now.

That would be nice. Personally I'm not a collector of game boxes or art books. But a cool print I can display on my wall (that doesn't scream YOU ARE A HUGE VIDEO GAME NERD) is nice. Funny enough I regret not getting the print from Ban-nu Saga despite the game turning out to be not so good.

Re: The old $15 price for WL2 you have to remember that's when KS'ing video games was relatively new and a wild Fargo appeared out of the bushes after doing nothing but shit games like Hunted and Choplifter HD for the better part of a decade.

But, yeah, since I can't see them putting it out for a release price of more than $40 (that's what WL2 is) you're getting a $15 savings (if you managed to get in early bird) for a somewhat unknown quantity by preordering two years (or more?) in advance. Nothing spectacular. Especially when you have to pay $60 or whatever to get beta access.

Oh, I see. I don't know if that's the reason. When I see a gradual price hike like that, I figure they've done some research and figured Kickstarter is no longer bringing in enough "casual backers" to justify a lower tier. So if you have a bunch of hardcore backers who could give you $25 or more, why tempt them with a lower price point?

Alternatively, the prototype's graphics and presentation are going to be so impressive that they think people will gladly pay.
