Indeed. Fallout and Fallout 2 barely register in their minds at all. Now, if they got re-released for Xbox One and Playstation 4, that's another story, but they're not going to pick up old games from the 90s on Steam out of curiosity.
I know people who like Fallout 3 and are looking forward to Fallout 4, and when I've asked if they played New Vegas, they say "Oh yeah, that was the weird one that came out a few years ago?" and when I ask about 1 and 2 they say they don't know anything about them.

I'd assume because the Mega Drive/Genesis is a port with far more history than the NES one (Atari used it for one) and a lot cheaper/easier to make as a result.
