Not everything a developer does is done because of the reaction they want to incite/avoid. People have the right to control what is and isn't included in their product, and Bethesda has made it clear that they don't want to devote resources to allow sick people to enact personal fantasies of infanticide. Its the same reason why I wouldn't expect them to include a feature that lets you rape woman and mutilate bodies. Its simply a moral black hole that the game would rather tactfully avoid rather than try to shatter the narrative tone for the sociopath market.

I don't want Elder Scrolls trying to ram hardcore dark fantasy down my throat like every pretentious RPG today, I want the game to be fun, and if people can't have fun without seeing dead children then I simply have no words for them.

Besides the point, if you just really cant get off without seeing dead children then download the mod, Bethesda won't stop you. But don't try to say that you are somehow entitled to your right to kill kids in a videogame. The only way I could see it tastefully handled is if it was similar to the original Fallouts, where killing a child resulted with all NPCs in the area turning hostile, an instant demotion to the special lowest karma rating, most quest givers/merchants refusing to talk to you and occasionally groups of bounty hunters attack, really just a non-standard gameover.

Also: cocks.

Killable children allow for meaningful escort quests involving children (little Timmy fell into a well, getting him out involves a grotto full of undead, goblins or undead goblins) and make a nice collateral damage hazard. It's also logical when you can already murder innocent adults, including women and elderly.
Besides, Deus Ex allowed you to spray little kids with tear gas, set them on fire, then blow them into tiny chunks of meat. It also tended to reward playing as at least partial pacifist, but I guess it's all merely a smokescreen to conceal its true nature - a kid murder simulator for deranged fucks.

And I don't know about dark fantasy, but one thing I don't want rammed down my throat is morality. Any morality. I have my own.

Also: cocks.
Don't want those rammed down my throat either.

It was a post directly stolen from the Escapist forums. I am surprised people like that still exist.

The cocks part was my creative addition.

Yeah, it's pretty depressing. I actually read the whole thing and I feel kind of sad right now. Sadder than when I read this a few days ago. That's how fucking horrible that thread is.

I wouldn't advise anyone who haven't done so yet to click on that escapist thread. There is no lulz to be had there. It's not the kind of funny stupidity we love to hate. Only the grim feeling that these people live among us, they vote and they breed.

Other games like "Fallout 2" allowed you to kill kids if you wanted to, and really we've been seeing the game industry backpedaling from things like that. At one time Bethesda was one of the edgier game developers.

I mean, it's ok when people don't even acknowledge the original Fallout games, but now they think the games were made by Bethesda too?

Funny how those who are morally enraged by the thought of killing virtual children have no qualms about killing virtual adults.
Isn't killing any humans, except in war and self defence, immoral in itself?
Is somehow the killing of virtual children more detrimental to real children than the killing of virtual adults is to real adults?
I mean, if you want to create a virtual world, you have to accept that people will test out anything to see what is possible, at least in a single player game where no others can be offended by what you do.

Good points sir. On one level, they may be against killing children because it's just the stated opinion of Bethesda and they will like anything that becomes the "accepted" opinion, they are just fanboys, railing against gaming entitlements etc
But on another level their militancy may come from the fact that they are morally immature and have not formed any opinion on individual or mass violence or even why they play video games. Their stance against killing children is simple to defend, and makes it easier - and pain free - for their brain to ignore the wider moral questions.

I posted this:
I have to say one thing to all the child fetishist in this thread. You, people make me sick.

Right to live isn't something that is reserved to children and adolescents. All innocents have a right to live. If you think that killing kids is worse than killing adults, think about your parents, your adult relatives. What would you feel if someone would murder them?

Would you think that it's ok if someone would murder your mother and put her head on on cupboard, like in that example of dark humour that Todd Howard presented? Killing an old lady and putting her head on a cupboard. That's the example he used. But he was the same person who said "do you really want to kill kids in game?".

I haven't seen any of you saying that innocent adults - parents, workers, brothers, sisters, husbands, wifes, (and yes, they are also someone's children) etc. in Skyrim deserve to be protected from murder or accidental death.
What kind of sick people you are? Your parents have fed you and clothed you and put up with your crap, but you don't have anything against them being murdered. A bunch of disgusting ingrates and sociopaths.

About the e-word, I recall professional gaming journalists using that word a lot.

I like how people parrot them without hesitation, it's like those cartoons where the villain shows up on worldwide TV and says that people must accept him as their leader, and people do as he says because the message is being played over and over so they sorta roll with it

No. It's immersive to CHOOSE not to kill kids. Can you tell the difference, punkwad? FFS

Bros, he may not have meant Bethesda was involved with Fallout 2. Haven't played much of their games to know if they were edgy, but it seems they were a bit.

I got to :salute: you for that awor, lulz incoming. What the fuck is up with the potato(?) usernames?

Anyway, since there apparently aren't any threads about it @GG some guy who worked at I Am Alive complained that pc gamers were bitching about not getting a version or something, I think a thread to :mob: about it is in order.

Personally I have no desire to kill virtual children, but if a dragon attacks a town the children should die just as easily as the adults, and not be immortals. Same reason I always play Oblivion with the Essential flag turned off on quest related NPCs. If they die, so be it. Then I can't compete that particular quest. If it's the MQ I use the console to Resurrect them (LA)RPing that they were just knocked unconscious and didn't wake up untill after the battle, not in the middle of it.
I'm such an immersionist...

That's what happens when game try to introduce "morality" based censorship. People stop thinking about ethics and start to think that the game says what is good and wrong. You have really twisted morality.
I don't know how old are you. I assume that you're kids - you have to quit gaming before it's too late. Start reading books. Good books, not the fantasy trash. And stop watching James Bond movies - they are trash and make killing people look like fun. In James Bond novels which were written by a real spy, James Bond doesn't feel good with killing people. Even with killing bandits and murderers.
I talked to soldiers and even for them shooting at enemies that shoot at them is difficult.

If you kill an adult in real life, you're a murderer and you're going to prison for a long time. You usually can't even kill evil adults, because it would be considered murder too. Killing is acceptable only during war and in self-defence and it's psychologically damaging even then.

Even Fallout 1 with its childkiller reputation penalty was morally sick. It's a game where you can murder sympathetic characters like Katrina and Tandi and Seth and Razlo and still not be pursued for murder and still be a "champion of humanity". It's like they are trying to teach kids that violence against innocent adults is acceptable.

Then they grow up and become policemen (like in individuals who do such things, I'm not suggesting that most of policemen behave like that or that police encourages such things) who beat up peaceful protesters just for fun or kick a pregnant woman until she miscarries just for the hell of it.

You need to stop playing games like Skyrim, kids, before it's too late. I've seen threats of violence in this thread - threads directed to people who haven't done anything to anyone. Such thing is be unacceptable. You really need to stop playing such violent games and experience life outside your computer room.

No. I don't randomly kill towns.
I have a problem when I watch a dragon's fire breath can kill a grown man in full armor in mere seconds while a kid can just bend over...catch a breath and get up again to run.

In fallout's defense. Its a post apocalyptic shit hole. Its the rule of the jungle. You either play by those rules, or you die and the wildlife feast on your rotting corpse. There is no police force, its completely lawless. There is no way for anyone to know who your murdered someone, because there is no information infrastructure. You do what you can to survive.

Morality as we know it only exists because our technological level ALLOWS it. If kids were less fortunate, they would turn to murder and theft to survive too. In the event that society falls, the "moral crusaders" are the first to die at the hands of the survivalists.

A thousand times, this. Also, has anyone brought up just how deranged it is that they let you burn, beat, stab, and pelt children in this and FO3, without fatal consequence, rather than just do the "weapon to the side, no attacking" trick from a million shooters? Or just remove them entirely, because it's not like one or two kids make a convincing world, and the entire plot of the game revolves around things flying in and suddenly killing everyone?

Did you actually play FO? It most certainly has 'police forces', laws, and there are plenty of ways for people to find out you murdered them. FFS

Junktown is a friggin' small town with a basic sherrif who enforces the law. FFS he hires the PC to gather evidence tso he can have legit reason to arrest/kill the criminal plotting his murder. He uses a tape record (away to gather evidence btw and sues the PC as a spy asnother way to gather info) to gatehr this evidence.

FFS Play the fukkin' game before spouting your bullshit!!!

Yeah, that explains why you are suddenly treated as if you personally dropped all those nukes if you kill a kid or two. Must be because it's a post-apoc shithole.

Something Awful:
I've been enjoying Skyrim so far and it's one of my major forays into the Elder Scrolls universe. However, it's bothered me to find out that the Redguard aren't technically considered to be the same branch of Men as the others on Tamriel. I'm not exactly sure if this is accurate, but it's a definite downer to me. As a black guy, I've always enjoyed reading the odd fantasy story or playing a fantasy game, but most of them focus around Ye Olde Europe-type facades. I found the Redguard to cool because they subvert the typical Otherness of darker skinned people in fantasy settings and they're not primal or uncivilized to boot.

He does kind of have a point. At least starting with Oblivion, Redguards had this weird "bonus to strength, penalty to intelligence" thing that was oddly conspicuous. Moreover, framing them as a literal separate species of people is kind of fucked up when you consider the real-world implications. I mean, yes, it's just a game but it's something that's always kind of bothered me in a nagging sort of way, even though it's not a case of active racism and more just the designers and writers not considering the implications of their decisions.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Afaik the Redguards didn't develop from the same ancestors as Nords/Imperials/Bretons, which means they are technically a different species.
