Game is visually stunning, looks like a shitty boring current-gen shooter with no distinguishing features otherwise. Like all of them, it's a game where lots of stuff happens around you at all times in order to delude you into thinking you are awesome.

:hearnoevil:

Spend $100 million/4 years on a game, cannot into gameplay. Why are Irrational even making videogames at this point? Looks more like they'd have better luck with animated films.

No fucking way they spent that much on a fucking game.
I'm exaggerating, still, it's yet another case of devoting a massive amount of time/money/etc. almost purely to artwork when the gameplay itself stagnates and becomes yet another interactive cutscene.

The most fun thing is that this happens while Levine continues to do interviews where he boasts about how videogames are interactive and how cool he is for not using cutscenes.

Bioshock was originally supposed to be more :obviously:, but it was (quite infamously) butchered by focus testing. Retards just couldn't handle it. One of the first games to really suffer from that, I think.
So they claim. Show me the gameplay footage proving it.

"Our game was totally going to sell awesome! Honest! But it was ruined by piracy focus testing!"

Who said it was going to be "awesome"? They explained in a post-mortem how they made many critical changes because of focus testing. Many other games since then have done the same thing (see Dishonored, or the Overstrike/Fuse debacle)

But I'm sure they didn't see those changes as something that made the game less "awesome". Quite the opposite.

Levine said somewhere that they removed quite a sizeable chunk of the story from the original script to the finished Bioshock, I think it was either 1/3 or 2/3 removed. He was quoted in finnish magazine, if I can find the right issue I can check it.

Oh, yeah. He keeps doing it while reducing the player to an observer. The same issue why I quit halfway through HL2EP2 - whatever was happening, it was happening to other people. After the game turned into an interactive movie, it was time to realise it wasn't exactly a good one at that. Bioshock was better at hiding this under the lavish environments, audio logs and such, at least until about halfway through when it all fell apart in a shower of dried glue and sawdust. By the time our hero was deepthroating a rusty drill to modify his voice (he literally does this), in order to be able to pass through a door (yes) in order to be able to play an escort mission (oh yeah), it was over. Just over.

I really get the sense of troubled project off this game, to a larger degree than normal. I hope I am wrong, I liked the original and am hoping for the best.

I'm honestly shocked that wasn't a DLC.

I know what they've claimed. I am calling bullshit on it. Same with Dishonored.

Focus groups are the new scapegoat. Piracy is the old favourite.

Not sure I follow you. That trailer does look like cartoony animation done on the cheap by a south korean studio. It also contains zero gameplay.

It also doesn't look like they've changed any mechanics, just visuals.

Not sure why Chris Avellone was drooling all over that 'Beast of America' trailer. The gameplay and visuals looked hardly any different from Bioshock. Bioshock was interesting and not bad for its time, but I really don't want to play the same game again but in a floating city instead of an underwater one.

The point is, it's an example of focus groups having an impact.
