2.4.0 Update

Last but not least, we have the aforementioned 2.4.0 update. It is a lengthy one, so better grab something to drink.

Major:
  • Revamped perk system
    - overhauled the whole perk tree, introduced new perks, merged others and in general gave players more freedom to express their builds in more detailed ways.
  • When loading an old save on this version of the game, character points and level will be reset and player will be given the correct amount of points to re-distribute
  • Major balance pass to everything, from enemies to items, perks and more
  • New Voice Over for our undead gunslinger from Stephen Russell himself
    !
  • Big optimization task has been completed and players should see an increase in fps across the board
  • Improvements to how enemies hear the player. No more jumping assassins flying towards their prey without a sound! Shooting near a building is now a risk of angering a whole lot of trouble inside.
  • Added beds to Chapter 1 to keep it consistent with other maps and to add more options for the players regarding fast traveling (Chicken Heads are still needed, so look out for those!)
  • Chapter 1 boss - alternative route is now connected to the actual fight. The way players go about that route will influence how hard the fight will be. Or you know, you could still go straight to the arena if you feel tough.
  • Boss fight of Chapter 2 has been improved and should pose more of a challenge
  • You asked for it. You got it: autosort button is available in inventory.
  • Fanning for revolvers - a proper gunslinger’s best friend is here.

Other changes, improvements and additions:
  • A new potion has been introduced that allows respec of player’s character.
  • Previously known areas may be a bit different… (Chapter 1 mostly)
  • Enemy placement and balance across the board has been improved
  • New option for setting up the frequency of our beloved protagonist’s barks - you wouldn’t dare to turn those off, would you?
  • LOTS of language improvements, corrected typos and other gremlins
  • VO for Jim Hooper has been changed
  • Mouse wheel and space are now correctly bindable as player wishes
  • Magpie buff from Totem of Souls has been nerfed
  • Improved the in-game compass - now it shows the world directions like a good compass should
  • Ammunition from bags is now usable by the player - reload away!
No more having to open inventory, find your bag and unpack those damn bullets manually each time you wanted to reload.
  • Player character will lower his weapon when talking to NPCs. A bit of good manners.
  • Lots of general audio improvements

Bug fixes:
  • A number of possible crashes has been addressed
  • At very specific circumstances, NPCs from Chapter 2 would not act according to their story route
  • Bunch of quality of life improvements across the board ie. how double clicking to move items works in certain scenarios
  • Fixed a case when it was possible to miss an attack when using a knife and sneaking behind an enemy
  • Tomahawk can no longer crash the game when thrown at lamp
  • You will no longer respawn in wrong camp in 3rd Chapter after certain story threshold
  • Squashed a literal horde of annoying bugs.

That is all for today folks, see you on the 20th on Youtube

I heard some OG Thief comparisons. If this is even 20% as good as Thief it'll be an automatic

:d1p:

I guess I'll try this out on release and see if those comparisons are justified.

Oh cool! I was going to say there's no reason not to play it now but the full release is in just a couple days? Awesome. Looking forward to a fresh playthrough with the various rebalances since May.

Weird West
Hard West (2)

three Wests enter, one West leaves.

It's getting harder and harder to differentiate between all these titles that end with 'West'. Wish the devs would get a bit more creative in the naming department.

I asked on steam forum, you can even start now. Since 1.0 will add the final stretch of content and mostly bugfixes, you should be able to smoothly transition from EA to 1.0.

Unless you no life this game and played all EA content in less than 48 hours

yeah the last patch already had gameplay balances in it, the revamped perk system and adding some things (like beds) to episode 1 and fixing up what was in the game before chapter 3 on full release.. the only thing that aren't in the game are cheevos which they said will be out w/ 1.0 if you care about them, not sure if retroactive or not. I'll probably just wait until 1.0 since it's only hours away at this point and I'm in no rush

I'm only an hour in but I like it so far. Plays like some sort of Thief + Dark Souls in a western setting. More Dark Souls than thief though.

Like the other comments I've read, it seems that stealth isn't all that necessary, especially since ammo is relatively plentiful. I ended up switching to soulslike luring tactics more than stealth. Clearing the church was much easier after that.

You can abuse the rest mechanic to reset merchant inventory and stock up on ammo.

Dying gives you these annoying curses that you have to do a certain task to undo. But so far I've only received the sneak kill task, which is super easy even with the stealth penalties because headshots 1-hit kill most of the weaker mobs, and it counts as a sneak kill as long as they're not alerted.

You don't really lose anything on death (that I've noticed) but it respawns some enemies. Resting does the same. I think the curses are the main death mechanic.

Story and the bonfire characters are kinda lame. But overall a good first impression.

Yeah West of Loathing pretty fun, Shadows of Loathing isn't quite as well done but still pretty good. I don't know if that's just because it was my second exposure to his style or what.

I agree with Shadows Over Loathing being less fun.
Must be the lack of spittoons.

Idk if i suck at the game (but yeah i only played about less than an hour) but i kept dying and simce some enemies repsawn every death/rest i have to conserve ammo by stealthing or melee-ing.

But fun game so far. I just did the cave spirit quest you get from the first npc you meet.

If you keep at it, you'll get used to it how the game works. Basically Darksouls-type git gud, but this game is easier than most fromsoft stuff once you learn how its mechanics work.

There's a few useful tricks that'll basically trivialize the first chapter:

  • You can outrun every single enemy in the first area. You can also run (slower) backwards. This means you can just run->turn around and shoot-> run.
  • It's just faster to lure enemies and kill them than sneaking.
  • Completing a curse task will heal any full (3/3) curse effects. So if you find yourself at 1 full curse and 2/3 another one, it's worth it to just die and complete the curse before healing.
  • Like I said up top, merchants have an endless amount of ammo, they just need to be reset by resting. I stock up whenever I don't mind enemies respawning.
  • A rifle as the main weapon and a sawed-off as your secondary is IMO the easiest way to play the first chapter. Prioritize headshots.

Anyone else experiencing this weird delay on sound effects?
Gunshots, foodsteps, etc. -effects feels to be playing fraction of a second later than they should.

Played for a few hours and the game is.....ahh mixed bag. The gameplay is trash, the setting is cool, the exploration is cool also open world deus ex style. What kills the game is the retarded no save enemy respawn garbage souls like mixed with the hit detection. In a game where you focus on head shots and precision aiming, you should expect to have a decent accuracy and not you just missing because reasons. The hit boxes are one of the worst i have seen in a fucking game lol. Also enemy do love to clip trough walls and just shoot you dead lol.

It is real shame how shit the combat is.

I played a bit last night and it definitely had some Thief vibes. Would probably have been better if they didn't go for the Dark Souls style enemy respawns but I guess they were a bit worried about length otherwise.

There is a way to disable it with an artefact. I found it somewhere around the ford area. Maybe it was in the safe on normal level building beneath the barracks or in the big monster caves behind the fort, the ones that lead to the tower with the quest item.

Also did anyone find where you get keys?
