What's that tentacled monster called?Famously, both those images were removed in the version of B3 Palace of the Silver Princess that actually appeared in stores. Fortunately, the cool Erol Otus cover remained.
Aboleth:What's that tentacled monster called?
Is it an Aboleth?
Aboleth are fish-like amphibians of immense size, often reaching 20 feet in length and weighing up to 6,500 pounds, though they continue to grow as they age and some fantastically ancient specimens might reach 40 feet in length. They resemble a bizarre eel, with long, tubular bodies, as well as a tail at one end and two fins near the head and another along the back. Aboleths' mouths are lamprey-like, filled with serrated, jawless teeth.
Note that this was the first TSR module written by a woman, so the (actually pretty mild) iffy stuff is all hers. It is pretty gud in its original edition (I have run it), with an eerie, haunted mood and sense of weirdness that's not really there in the revision. You can't post Silver Princess and not post it's...ahem...special art
Erol Otus, rather than Jean Wells, would have been to blame for the risque artwork, which seems to have been what drew the attention of TSR executives after some copies had already been printed. Of course, the ensuing revision by Tom Moldvay also made considerable changes to the substance of the adventure module, and Jean Wells was then sidelined from design work.Note that this was the first TSR module written by a woman, so the (actually pretty mild) iffy stuff is all hers. What is this table from? It never occurred to me that Carrion Crawlers would be related to Illithid, but now that I think about it, the paralyzing tentacles would have that make a certain sort of sense.
