This is really difficult, with only 5 games I can't list stuff like Chrono Cross, Pokémon SoulSilver, Valkyria Chronicles or Breath of Fire 4, that are must-plays but not the very best of the genre. Would be nice to be able to vote for up to 10 games, to get a more interesting range of votes.

Lots of games I haven’t played in the SaGa series as well that might have made the list. Haven’t played SMT series or spin-offs.

edit- Some other honorable mentions: Skies of Arcadia, Time Stalkers and Trails of Cold Steel.

Chose FFVII over FFVIII because of too much gay romance shit in VIII. Would give a point to one of the step-based SMT games (I, II, SJ), but haven't played far into any of them. Disappointed by DQ III unfortunately (I'll give it another shot someday).
