A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I doubt you'd consider 150+ of the crpg book non-rpgs. Sure there are some blatant examples of such, but those are quite a minor fraction. Without an explicit list, it's empty words, or just a newfag trying to blend in.
Up to the early 2000s it's solid. But after that, especially after ~2005, it gets iffy. I read every entry and added all of them to the List of RPGs thread. 150+ is a stretch (my ~50%+ comment was exaggeration and mostly in relation to the Codex GOTY), but there's still a sizable minority that shouldn't have made it in and I'm not sure why (other than padding stats). There was one that even bordered on Loli. I'm willing to go through and make a list if anyone here is actually willing to discuss this instead of attacking a join date. It shouldn't take long, I just need to go through the games I skipped over making an entry for.

Codex GOTY lists are a different story altogether that would take way too long to list out.
Ok, I can see where you coming from, there's an argument to be had over the later years getting overrun with dubious entries.

BTW, using hyperbole is a time-old codex tradition, which you seem to have a good command of, and so is attacking the join date, so no sweat. :positive:

Please do so; the Codex can never have too many discussions debating the meaning of the RPG genre. :positive:

He has a point tho, games from 2005+ include:

Dwarf Fortress
Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup
Sengoku Rance
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II

I wouldn't consider roguelikes as RPGs, also one's a hentai game and another a puzzle game. But you could argue that they contain RPG elements but DoW2? That's an RTS hands down.

Traditional roguelikes are, without a shadow of doubt, a sub genre of CRPG - which means DCSS is legit. End of discussion.
As to DF, I never played the adventure mode (that is the name?) so I can't say for sure.

Oh Diablo 4 is going to win. That's a fact. It's more of an RPG than just about every other game on the poll, with maybe BG3 and Colony Ship being the only exceptions. But it's hard to argue against the sheer depth and complexity of D4's character building.

Adding onto this list:

Hand of Fate
The Council
Cultist Simulator
Slay the Spire
Borderlands
Faery: Legends of Avalon
Yumina the Ethereal

Off the top of my head^^

I just want someone to explain to me a definition of RPG that includes something like Slay the Spire without inadvertently including thousands of games that don't belong. The line has to be drawn somewhere and I think it should be more strict than the cRPG book. I'm sure it's hard to fill out more recent years with proper games but forcing it like this makes no sense to me. Either don't include them at all or fill out the earlier years with more games. I can name some Russian jank that don't fall under the traditional cRPG meaning but are more unique/better/more true to the RPG genre. Like I said, I'm not picky when it comes to the definition. There's a bunch of RPG/RTS hybrids out there and the simple way I distinguish them is ~50%+ RPG mechanics, with the other 50% or less coming from another genre. I am not a purist when it comes to a defintion.

Then there's shit like this:

Yumina-the-Ethereal-Yumina-Bully.jpg

That's a different topic altogether though. Hell, even look at the shit games that get threads in GRPG, and even a good chunk of entries in cRPG book don't get one here.

Naw it will probably be Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3.

That's how much gaming tastes on the Codex have declined precipitously

I would say it depends on a roguelike. Otherwise I do agree. The biggest problem is that people tend to classify anything with any RPG elements as an RPG. There is also a problem of people not understanding what "playing a role" really means in the context of an RPG.

you're just in the honeymoon phase.
Or he's just trolling. I always saw Diablo as hack'n'slash with some RPG elements (same with Sacred or Divine Divinity).

yeah it’s basically a loot casino. you kill stuff over and over hoping for good drops. Build customization does not make something an RPG imo, you can customize tanks in tank games. That’s what your character is, a killing machine to get loot to kill stuff faster to get more loot. Pretty fun but I wouldn’t say it’s an RPG in the traditional sense. ARPGs are their own thing.

I’m currently playing D2 and Sacred, got interested again after the D4 hype, but absolutely no desire to play D4, not even D3.

Diablo 3 is not worth considering. No idea how is Diablo 4, because it is clear to me that Blizzard has ended when it became Activision-Blizzard.

The "RPG" is a lie we tell ourselves to be able to sleep at night. Codex GOTY 2023 will be Starfield with BG3 a relatively distant second. This is just the law of numbers. More people will play those two games than anything else, so they will get more votes. Simple as.

Already played Colony Ship and Baldur's Gate 3 beta versions and I liked both (while I wasn't particularly a fan of AoD nor DOS 2, although I liked DOS' Cyseal area a lot).

So it's quite likely that my GOTY 2023 will be either Colony Ship or Baldur's Gate 3.

As for the rest of the titles on the list: I have not even the slightest interest in any of these.

Starfield will win and it won't be even close, Codex GOTY been just a copy of mainstream results for a couple of years now, as evidenced by games like Disco Elysium or Elden Shit winning GOTY, despite not even being RPGs, purely because they were Reddit favourites at the time. If one year Call of Duty 9000 or Fifa 2050 will be the most popular mainstream game, and the retard dumbfuck organizing Codex GOTY decides to add it to the poll as an option, it will win Codex GOTY too, simple as that.

It won't be Starfield. These forums still have a massive hate boner for anything Bethesda despite similar games from CDPR being rated favorably.

GOTY absolutely WILL be Diablo 4 or I'm punching you all in your dicks. The game shall not be denied it's accolades. I'm making damn sure of it.
nothing will justify spending money on cosmetics, even if it does win goty, which it won't

You don't HAVE to buy the cosmetics. I wish people would stfu about the shop. It's 100% optional. Dumbest thing one can possibly complain about.

There are plenty of cool looking item cosmetics you just find in the world, totally free. Matter of fact I'd argue there's free cosmetics you can find that look cooler than alot of shit in the shop.

No always-online required game will ever be GOTY on the codex
Just because it's never happened doesn't mean it never will. Also, I don't believe it's going to remain online-only. Call it a hunch but there's going to be an offline mode at some point down the road, and it wont be far off. I know things.

Uuuh, like there was one for Diablo 3?

If you design a game from the start to be server-dependent the only way you can get an offline mode is to make a completely new game with the same content. I'm suuuuuuuure they work on it
