It's 3d that kinda looks like 2d, mostly due to sticking to old-school rendering techniques(low resolution, no normal maps, no AA) and a 1px outline around stuff.
In my case it's a robot as seen by the scanner of the player's mech. In your case it does look a bit more organic and expressive, nice work.zwanzig_zwoelf Is it a spider themed robot or a hologram/stylized image of an actual spider? In case of the former p. good, if not I'd roll with slightly higher polycount to make it look more organic. Here's my quick take
There are two games that successfully used that style iirc, just go easy on the white backgrounds.
Okami is probably one of them.
Remember a Tale of Ronin that was shooting for a similar look, but dunno if that'un is being worked on now.

I know this particular image is qualitatively hideous, since I just cobbled it together in 10 mins using stock images. But I really like this style of minimalist painting, and wonder if it would work for an RPG.
