Calling Dark Souls is an action RPG is weird. As shitty as Elder Scrolls games are they aren’t even remotely similar in design and in general DS has barely any similarities with older CRPG in general aside from the superficial stat system. Comparing them is stupid.

Dark Souls is like a 3D version of old Japanese side scrolling action games rather than an action rpg like ES, Diablo, and the like.

Including that classic archaic brutal game design which as far as I’m aware at the time when Dark Souls released on console was revolutionary because those were the times of the cinematic and casual games were popular.

This is the reason why for so many gamers DS is like the first “real” gaming experience they’ve had.

If you need to repeat bosses over and over again just to be able to defeat them it's because they telegraph their attacks poorly. Sometimes the developers do it on purpose.

Or they require a higher level of execution than journalist mode. An encounter you see first time with a decent number of abilities that actually require you to understand and outplay them can easily last several hours. From games are seriously undertuned and most abilities can be bruteforced without actually understanding them. Yet fucktard pretend gamers still complain.

Dark Souls is on par with any of the greats from the 90s, which for a game released in 2011 is like a miracle, literally a unicorn in a sea of shit and decline.

This is what the entire FromSoft legacy is based upon - Total garbage encounter design that only players stupid enough to engage with it will put up with it.

I'm not a Souls fan, but what you say completely ignores what From made years before any of those games were made.

The Armoured Core and Kings Field/Shadow Tower series' are much a part of said legacy any anything they've made after the Souls games.

DS is not an action-rpg like ES or Diablo, it's an action-rpg like Dragon Slayer, Crystalis, Faxanadu, Soul Blazer, etc. This subgenre was around before Blizzard and Bethesda even existed, it's weird to imply their games are more representative.

I was responding to Lyric Suite bringing up the TES games, and all of those you mention are exactly what I referenced. 2D action sidescrollers, but I think it’s more accurate to just refer to them as action games as the RPG elements are minimal or only superficial (using “RPG elements” as referring traditional CRPG design of a system guided by stats).
