The game I played was sardonically critical of both capitalism and communism while generally supportive of laize-faire principles
Ok, but can you play as a National-Socialist? If yes, I'm sold.

you can, but only as proud white NPC

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Well, I was a GIANT FUCKING FASCIST and Kim still liked me
I guess he's like Virgil from youknowwhatgameimtalkingabout. Whatever you do, he ends up mirroring your behavior.

Nah he doesn't, the game tracks which things you said that he likes and which he dislikes, and based on that Kim decides whether he trusts you or not. He was never fully on board with several aspects of my personality, but respected me for my good detective work and we had some bro moments over nerd shit (like cars).

I suspect you don't have a family yet, and possibly are still a student or younger. You might carry on replaying after that, but you will be a bit more understanding with those who don't :).

As for choices vs illusion of choice, they all use some illusion of choice for some extent. Out of the 20 "best RPG according to the Codex", I played 14 and story-wise I would say 10 are mostly about illusion of choice, or no choice at all. I don't count choosing your fate in the very final hour of the game as a "choice" btw.

I get what you are saying, an you are free to enjoy what you enjoy, but why call it an RPG then and why present it like it has player choice, while it has not? That is false advertising, you know. I mean, it is prefectly OK to prefer storyfag linear adventure games for your entertainment, but why pretend they are roleplaying games?

Your excuse is the most decline thing i have read on this forum in a long time, and i have read a lot of retarded shit on this forum from supposed RPG fans. Your answer to "well Disco Elysium has a lot of issues" is "well it felt nice enjoying the ride once so i don't care, it is still the best RPG". Seriously?

Bethesda Mario basically summed up everything I wanted to say about your line of thinking. It just reminds me of Telltale games so much. In the beginning of every game, they would show texts that say “your story and experience is tailored to your choices.” And it most certainly is not. Think back to the Walking Dead 1. If you save Carley in episode 1, she gets shot in the eye in episode 2. If you save Doug in ep 1, he dies when he catches a bullet for you...Yeah, tailored, my ass. Also, in the end Lee either dies or dies and turns into a zombie...Most people liked the story back then, including me. But I was sane enough to recognize a deception when I saw one. It was false advertising on its highest order. And then Telltale did this to every single one of their subsequent games, and a lot of people (like you) actually cheered for it every time. Eventually they still caught fire and went bankrupt. I was a little sad about it back then because I actually liked some of their stuff , but I was also happy that so many people were finally waking up and started catching on to their lies.

About replays, there’s no need to drag your wife and kids into this. It doesn’t matter how busy you are, you still get down time. And you just like playing linear adventure games more than replaying actual RPG’s with choices, which is fine because it’s your personal preference. It’s poor form to hide behind your wife and kids though. If you can find time to discuss games with the rest of us retards, I doubt you are really as busy as you said you were.

I actually play adventure game exclusively with my wife, because that's something she enjoys. That's why I play so many adventure games, really. - though I do enjoy them I would rather you gave me a Panzer division anytime
I am a normally busy adult, but I play a lot of wargames // strategy games // tactical games in addition to RPG and in addition to really all genre so no I don't feel the need to replay a RPG.

eg this is what I am playing at the moment for GOG only, there are more on Steam

[I haven't started Dragon Commander and I am not playing that Battle Isle 14-18 at the moment]

I post here in ALT-TAB while working, except the Let's Play obviously. And even then I don't post that often - 560 messages since 2011, hundreds of messages for the let's play included.
I have long periods with no messages for sure, and period of less activity at work where I could post more.

I found Walking Dead mediocre because even if you check walkthrough or read forum it actually does not keep its illusion of "letting you choose" very well past the first let's say two episodes - unlike Disco Elysium. The story itself is subpar, the only thing saving that game is the relationship between Caroline and the MC. I did not play Season 2.
On the other hand, I am currently using the time I have to finish the Banner Saga, and it does a WAY better job at making you believe that what you do matter, even though (in part I) how many people die or survive in your caravans has actually no impact, even though whatever you do you will arrive at the same final location (though not necessarily with the same crew), even though you will have to lose one of two main characters in the final battle, etc etc.

If I played it a second time, I would have to go through the exact same location, read almost the same dialogs, maybe lose one more guy here and get one more guy there - basically the same experience a second time. But I don't care, because I won't replay it and I loved my "journey" playing humanphobic vargs - because I chosed THAT to be their character, bleeding heart liberal Rook (because I chosed THAT to be his character) and later cold ruthless Arlette (because I chosed THAT to be her character).

[in their defense, the decision you take at the end of Part 1 echos and significantly change the rest of Part 2 and I suppose Part 3]

The political thing is way too simplistic. For example, you CAN be a nationalist and not be a racist at the same time. There's nothing wrong with wanting to restore your country's former glory in and of itself. But every single NPC in the game who professes nationalism is also a massive racist, which is retarded.

Further to this, this is the top of the Steam list (there are a few missing like Noita, Ostalgie and Unity of Command II), but on the other hand I am NOT playing Dungeons and DCS and I am going to move to "will not play further" Black Mesa and Brutal Legends

Do you really think I want to replay a game when I still have so many "fresh" games to play instead ? :)

There's also a million and one ways to be a capitalist / communist, but there's only like one and a half shades each to choose from in Disco. That's limitations of how many 'tones' and variations they can provide where every tone has to be supported through copious amounts of handwritten, interconnected dialogue. It's a limitation that exists across all the different 'ideologies' in the game. Some players seemed to be particularly upset about a specific one - e.g. early release Codex discussion on how this MUST BE COMMIE PROPAGANDA - which often reveals more about themselves and which ideologies they are happy to stereotype in their heads vs. which ones they insist are misunderstood.

And personally I hated the whole phasmid ending, because it felt like a big heap of magical realism bullshit plastered on top of what had heretofore been a pretty blunt work of pragmatic philosophy.

you just haven't experienced the world of dialectical materialism. all this semi-existential stuff is straight from Lukacs or something.

So that’s my point. I think people harangue Disco, especially around here, basically for not being what they want it to be – fundamentally, a power fantasy. They concoct a bunch of specious ‘reasons’ for why it’s not a proper RPG or some such bullshit, which is really just the hall-monitoring typical of broken men without any real power. They babble about how Disco dernt have COMBAT so it’s not a GOOD RPG without realizing that Disco simply obfuscates its ‘combat’ in a different way – the combat is your own internal dialog. But because you aren’t killing another rat for 5 XP, it’s not a true RPG. And because you aren’t given the ‘option’ to build your character as a strengthy ogre vs a roguey elf – and then go kill a bunch of fucking rats in slightly different ways – also clearly means its not a true RPG. Bullshit. I can’t even say Disco is entirely critical of authoritarian fascism, ‘cuz I’m pretty sure it also gives you the ability to play the game as a full-fat jackboot. What Disco truly appears to be critical of is dipshits who accept hand-me-down ideological realities without any personal, critical faculty whatsoever. And sure, I can see why that really pisses off some of the pasty mommy-fucking wannabee Hitlers on these here forums.

The #2 RPG on this site (and for many their personal #1) is Fallout. This line of thinking is bad and retarded.

Fallout is one of the greatest role-playing games of all time, and you don’t ever have to kill anything. Tons of people have done pacifist runs of Fallout. Disco Elysium is a decent enough story, though it certainly struggles towards the end, not to mention missing some huge moments (why didn’t we get to talk to Lena about the phasmid? The old broken soldier on the island was majorly unsatisfying as a conclusion to the mystery. The church was not great.)

At the end of the day, locking progression for the plot to a Shivers check means that the role-playing was meaningless. Contrasted to Fallout, where no matter what choices you made, you still have the freedom to pursue the plot line in whatever fashion you’d like.

I really like Disco Elysium, but I shouldn’t have played it right after playing Fallout 1 for the first time, because all I could see were its flaws as compared to Fallout.

The dialogue was excellently written, however, and had me busting my sides at multiple occasions. I also never thought it was a “commie” game.

No I didn't
Still I maybe retard but Disco is a truly amazing game
Like Torment-level amazing.
Torment...level...amazing...? I think I’m dying of RPG blasphemy. I will now replay Torment for the 999th time just to cleanse the sins and decadence that I have just witnessed.

Agreed. Disco is fun enough, but it can’t even hold a candle to Torment. I don’t even think it’s fair to Disco to try and compare it.

I liked DE as much as Torment. Torment had pointless thrash combats but apart from that the same kind of personal development. I would also say that PT is - almost - as linear as DE.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. There are multiple ways to resolve many (including the main) quests in Torment. For example, having very high Wisdom and talking to the Transcendant One leads to a different outcome than if you focused on Strength. In some ways, DE had this, but as noted above, DE's main quest gets locked behind a Shivers check, thus rendering the role-playing somewhat moot. Torment certainly has flaws and it is true that it is not as good for role-playing as Fallout. But the story of Torment is so good that it outshines that flaw. I don't feel the same for DE.

There's also the fact that PST feels a lot more open than Disco. Getting out of the Mortuary is possible through a variety of solutions; when you first get into the Hive, the game is pretty darn open about where you can go, and what you can do.
