What I object to is living in some world where everyone is a boring alcoholic

I think everyone on this website was okay that every single person in The Age Of Decadence is nihilistic asshole?

I believe that, while such perspective is justified by the setting (and yes in Disco too), of course, the imprint of the creator's personality is everywhere in the creation.

There's no happy families

Cryptozoologist & his wife?

There's no people who have found peace inside themselves.

Dice maker?

What I object to is living in some world where everyone is a boring alcoholic. There's no happy families. There's no people who have found peace inside themselves. It's like if the kids I went to punk rock shows when I was a teenager were perpetually stunted and still lived in that state and imagined what the world is.
There are few reasons for that, I imagine. Revachol is a dysfunctional city plagued by post-war/post-communist problems, and the district we play in probably tends to highlight the low points. It's pretty much a messed up world, essentially. In addition, I doubt "normal" or "happy" is what makes things interesting, so we get the more "people with problems" than we usually would/should when exploring of the world, which helps the writers touch specific themes of despair and hopelessness in order to resonate with the player.

I get that, I just feel like a city that's perpetually rainy and sad is not actually that creative when you think about it. There's the whole Tallin-London-Seattle crowd who want to make every game like that and act like they're still being really fucking cyberpunk when we've been doing this for 30 years now. These people would never in their wildest dreams be able to imagine children playing in Africa or Southeast Asia and just one goddamn bit of refuge from their wallowing.

I ended up caring about the ex-fiancee plot more.

There were a few moments like that that were great. To me she was the most interesting character in the game and we never even get a proper dialogue with her. I also liked the reveal of the phasmid (I had no idea it was going to happen).

Oh I agree with this so much! Wish they made it so that Harry's investigation would somehow lead to her in some way, but they actually went out of their way to tell you that "there's no epic final showdown". Only misery and pain for Harry. This is supposed to encourage Harry to stop wallowing in pity and obsessing over what can't be changed. But like, he was so sad that he tried to commit suicide by driving his car into the ocean and practically drank himself into oblivion. How was he supposed to find peace while recovering from amnesia accompanied by a massive hangover? Also, nothing he could find during the murder investigation would help him with his lost love. This man needs actual professional help. Looks like he's basically gonna repeat that dream over and over until he drinks himself into oblivion again. It's pretty bleak, to be honest.

Hmm....about the phasmid, I think I saw it coming from a mile away because I did the quest for Lena...but that's just me ;P

The bulk of the game though has you slogging through dealing with a bunch of boring, hopeless, depressing junkies and burnouts. If I wanted to do that, I could very easily in real life. They're motivated by what millenial European bourgeois kids imagine is what motivated early 1900s European bourgeois kids. And I'm supposed to be really inspired by helping these rave kids take over a church and turn it into Ibiza. Most of this stuff just does not have any interest to me across the ocean and in another generation.

I don't regret playing it and I hope it inspires others, but I get the distinct impression that the people who made it did not understand what parts of it were actually good and why.

Yeah, that ties in with Harry's bleak past and future. If you didn't know already, Disco Elysium is based on the universe created in the dev's own personal book. And he started writing this book when he was 16, so...it's kind of eerie when I was reading your comment here lol. You can also kind of tell because the whole political thing is very simplistic in this world. Everybody basically just spews one liners to support their own ideology. The commies wouldn't shut up about worker's rights, the capitalists go on and on about, well you guessed it, capital. And the fascists are all massive racists that make Hitler proud.

I just finished Disco Elysium, and, like some around here, I think it is as good as Planescape: Torment, and that it is the first game to be directly descended from it. It's true that Age of Decadence, in its talking path, does something that resembles it, but its ancestry is clearly Fallout. Some scenes are splendid —the karaoke, the one going to the island by boat with the boombox playing, the dream about the ex-partner, etc.—. The writing, the created world and some of the characters also seemed very well done.

That said, I agree that the weakest part is the killer at the end. He is clearly a deus ex machina. Especially in a police story, it should not happen that the murderer appears only by the end, even though, as has been shown in some images, there are clues that, in a second play, can be interpreted as if they were pointing to him. I think one way this problem could have been avoided is if the killer had been placed somewhere prior to where Harry meets him; after all, the killer says he goes everywhere and is seen by everyone. Maybe he could have been listed as a possible suspect, later ruled out, or just a chance encounter.

Another issue that I think would have made it a better game is if some skill checks had been higher. I've been through several that, had I failed them, would have made me want to replay it by molding a different Harry. And, also in relation to the skill checks, I liked that on some occasions the skill would simply have a possibility of response, but it did not tell you which was the optimal one. Everything should have been like that, and it would have been better too that, once an option was elected, the other ones were eliminated. This way, I think, the gameplay would have felt a little less passive and more dynamic. Because DE shows that basing the gameplay mainly (the exploration should also be considered, although I wish there were more places) on conversations and skill checks tends to make the gameplay a bit monotonous, although it manages to save the situation due to its quality in others elements.

In any case, a really good game, and hopefully ZA / UM will be encouraged to delve into its design and created world in their next game. Also, I would like to see more detectives games.

I'll never understand that particular criticism of Disco Elysium, as there are myriad clues concerning the identity of the culprit scattered over the course of the investigation, including the corpse of the victim himself informing you about communism (and love) having killed him, a visual calculation that the bullet might have been fired from the islet (albeit the least likely location according to Harry's assessment), dried may bells associated with the Revolution appearing on Klaasje's roof, the bullet being determined to originate from an antique rifle associated with the Revolution, a bunker with communist paraphernalia having been used as a hideout, a ruined anti-aircraft tower visible on the islet, et cetera.

One day I will play Disco and finally form my opinion if it's an RPG or not.

Any chances of it running on a shitty laptop?

It was badly optimized on release (freezes and low FPS on minimal graphic presets on 6 GB RAM), but iirc it was fixed. Still, the game is pretty demanding.

They did an extremely heavy round of optimisation for the Working Class Release. At this point it runs very well for a Unity game. Your laptop has to be pretty shitty not to run it. Buy it, try it, if it doesn't run well enough for you, refund it.

I think this is more complex than "woman who believes her marriage is a sham and has no foundation beyond searching for cryptids".
"Oh no, they have regrets, their marriage is a sham!"

Yeah, the easiest way to improve on this commie killer would have been introducing him throughout the game making you suspect but then discard him as a perpetrator. I honestly hoped that somebody I’ve already met would pop up as the killer. Hell I even expected that to be Harry himself, especially when he had a dialogue line when examining the gun nest with a mattress that the killer may be right here (apparently that was just another deranged line of his). So yeah kinda missed opportunity to wrap the plot in a more impactful way.

Same goes for mercenaries and their appearance during the showdown. Would have been cool to meet all of them disguised as citizens at some point like we met their leader.

Honestly I’ve been surprised by the lameness of the ending which was in huge contrast with the rest of the game that is absolutely fucking amazing. I’ve just finished it for the first time since buying it in 2019 — at the time I just wasn’t yet ready to dump combat. Thankfully, the director’s cut really improved the game, and HDR is awesome in it with proper monitor, so worth the wait overall.
