Probably not strictly true, since the matchmaking and chat features depend on a dedicated server? If there has to be one api for that, i guess steam api is the best. I just wont use it.

BTW: the only reason that gog doesn't have the same facility to patch games as steam is that they're not engineers of the same caliber. Every programmer knows that certain types of file compression are usable with file agnostic differential patching. It's all the other crap (crypto, DRM, solid archives, devs already compressing with proprietary unshared formats) that makes things like replacing a 4 gb files to replace 4 textures happen.
Steam apis are actually a force for standardization, especially their VFS. A pity GOG refuses to recode installers into something saner than install shield instead of 'overlaying' stuff.
Someone said Larian had a plan for multiplayer between different versions.

Also, the gog galaxy thing seemed to imply a compatibility with Steamworks multiplayer.

Mmmmm... Minor heal is kinda op. Since there's no mana to spend you can just spam it after every encounter.

That is kind of the point of it. It is shitty spell that function like regeneration after battle. It's modern problem with open world design where developer doesn't want player to respect his health bar and gives him option for cheap heal which also invalidates whole point of restoration magic, food stuff and other mechanics that are created to help with health.

You know like FNV drugs spam in every location.

I bet most of these people who are complaining have their own steam account and will of course register the game there. They're complaining just because it was promised no-DRM, even if they actually use DRM.

True, but:

I sometimes still reinstall games from my old physical copies, luckily they didn't require online activation as many of the companies involved no longer exist. No matter, I own the game so am not dependent on them.

(...) If the disc requires Steam activation it becomes useless to me and I'd use the GOG key myself and the $65 box essentially becomes a GOG key with a manual. I wouldn't have bothered getting the physical copy if I wasn't assured it was DRM-free.

/\ This.

----------

And that's the problem. If you have a DVD and you need, besides it, to do a download and also install a third party program so your game can be used - that sucks. And an even bigger problem because it was promised that it wouldn't be that way, it wasn't part of the agreement - I understand why Larian decided to go this way, but I believe it was a bad decision.

To solve this they would have to, again, delay the release of the game, or at least postpone the delivery of the versions on physical media. Maybe they could give the option to choose, whether backers prefer to wait for a second wave of DVDs that would actually DRM-free or to have it as it is right now... I don't know, they put themselves in a situation where there isn't really a right answer, because all of them would create outrage.

I also think the DVD should come with full install without any type of activation, but if you want to buy/back physical copies, you do that nowadays just because of a neat box and collectibles. But that brings the shittiest Idea of all time regarding Collector's editions: You buy a CE of wolfenstein the new order and get a lot of phisical goodies, except the game.

The idea of a DVD with full game with no activation is something that is becoming obsolete, and I think the idea larian (and all other kickstarters) wanted to give was having a nice box full of content and a DVD in a case, just for you to feel the smell and touch your game.

Since they give you a GOG drm free version, you can back that up in a DVD rom and have your DVD with no activation protocols.

I sometimes still reinstall games from my old physical copies, luckily they didn't require online activation as many of the companies involved no longer exist. No matter, I own the game so am not dependent on them.

You don't require online activation, you require online faqs on how to install old games on newer computer systems. You're dependant on modders and unofficial patches.

Today I played Thief: the Dark Project on a system needing online activation despite the fact that Looking Glass Studios has been closed for over a decade.

How did I do this magic?

Just wanted to say that I've been gingerly dipping my toes into the beta and this game is amazing. It's already so well polished it looks like a true AAA title. Once more VA is added and the final touches are put on the game, I think we're looking at something that could vie for RPG of the year. Seriously, it looks that good and is so far utterly addicting to play.

Once again Larian look poised to deliver the goods. The 30th can't get here soon enough.

And at 30 they would announce an unforeseen delay. Then you'd need to wait until they would correct a gamebreaking bug in 5th patch.

Something that just occured to me, if a physical game is tied to an account, how would that affect its value in the collectors market?

As a collector just burn the GOG copy to a disk and throw it in the box... problem solved. The GOG "disk" isn't tied to any account so if someone sells it on the secondary market I don't think it would devalue it in any way. In fact, this is what I do for all my classic games that have GOG versions (and even ride the high seas for games not on GOG ) and burn their game files to a disk and include them in the box. Not many people can use/ have floppy disk drives or even cassette players for the really old games :obviously:. Recently, I've begun to put them on small flash drives since those things are so cheap now and more and more the CD drive is becoming a dinosaur!

I guess DVDs are still cheap and reliable this days, but I'm waiting for the day where USB dongles is the way to distribute games.

As soon as GOG releases their own software platform, thats where i will move most of my game library. The only thing they have lacked so far is an auto-update feature to their games, when that is in, no more steam...

Yeah the only thing holding GOG back is the issues with updating (that and their fucking delayed installers, they are liars and they definitely take longer than they should because of advertisments).

so, any word on the alpha keys being the finished game, as opposed to what they previously said? a lot of codexers passed down their keys to other people because they were told it wouldn't matter...

i cannot shake the impression that if they did that, they would end up a steam clone with their own version of the shitty chat and retarded trading cards, as well as drm system, and that using it would feel just like playing yet another wow clone.

No. I don't see how Larian could not do what they previously said (revoke kickstarter alpha/beta keys and replace with keys for the full game wherever the backer chooses).

while the possibility probably exist, i've yet to witness any mass revokings, and the way it usually works is by making separate beta that just expires upon final release. ah well, in two weeks we'll know (or get another delay).

two weeks is not what i'd call few.
