Skyrim sold millions in a day- D:OS, well, i don't know, but i will be happy if it sells 500K in its first month.

OTOH, it sold something like 140K copies in the first two days (assuming that EA only got like 20K copies out), and it's now been 3 times that. There is hope that they already sold something like 300-400K copies. I like being optimist.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I did not mean to imply that DOS will ever sell as much as Skyrim (this would imply that non-retards are more or equal in number to retards, hypothesis rejected by several thousands years of human history), but that I hope DOS will serve, in a smaller scale and within its limits - let's say 1-2 million users at best - the same function Skyrim served: thriving community, plenty of mods, years in the charts, countless clones...

After all, and contrary to the mega-budget of Skyrim, I am told that at 1 million copies DOS will be a smashing success.

It would- if 250K of sold copy at full price means it becomes profitable, 1 Million copy should mean that they now have enough money to more than make another equivalent game.

I am somehow expecting that, if they reach 500K copies, we will get a real expansion (think throne of bhaal) for D:OS in the 'short term' as well as a denser game (day/night schedule, more C&C, etc) for the long term.

I am also somewhat expecting them to try Kickstarter if only for the beta players, as it seems Larian managed such a polished game because of it and they know it.

Most of the interesting things is the time of the peak of players in steamcharts. It seems that europeans love D:OS, but the americans seem to be not so interested in D:OS.
The pole position of D:OS indicates, that currently DOS makes up of around 10% of the whole sales on Steam. The pole position is also responsible for higher sales of D:OS on Steam.
Advertising for no money! (for a good game, but still for free)
The backers made D:OS a better game and now they are also doing the advertising for D:OS. And this only by giving for free the beta to the backers, on Steam.

This might be due to how there is currently next to no review from the US on D:OS. Hell, metacritic is being a bitch and refusing to include some reviews (softspot, rpgfrance).

And, yeah, there is always some kind of "Eurofags rpg" view from US gamers.

Larian's 160k was based on EA as well as the Steam Sale. If they accrue another 160k at full price over the month of July, then that should be a very healthy result for them.

Why would it need 250K to become profitable? Seems like it would be more like 200K, or less, based on what we know.

Swen told Eurogamer the game cost approx $5.45M to make. Figure they got $850K from Kickstarter, after fees and pledges that fell through, etc. So $4.6M remaining to be made up. If you figure an average Steam price of $35 (taking the $30 sale into account), they got $24.50 from each Steam purchase after Steam's 30% fee. So all sales after about 188K are profit.

We know that all sales past the 188K mark are a full $40 price (so far), so they'll get $28 apiece from those. So they need to sell another 195K copies on top of the 188K (total 383K) and they've already made $5.45M of profit (the budget of D:OS) to use towards their next game. They also have the option of going back to Kickstarter and they'll probably get inXile/Obsidian type money from there now. It seems like they'll be in very good shape in the near future.

They have investors they need to pay.

Don't know what you mean by that. Everything I've seen says D:OS was self-funded (excluding the Kickstarter campaign obviously...) You mean the company owes other debts that weren't related to the development of D:OS, so Swen wouldn't have included them in the $5.45M number?

edit: ah I found a post from a year and a half ago on Swen's blog saying that there was indeed 1 investor involved with Original Sin. No details on what the arrangement is with that investor though. http://www.lar.net/2013/02/04/larian-kickstarter/

It's still #1 on steam. Obviously it's the hard numbers that matter and not the relative sales, but still. I would not have expected this to happen. At all.

Truly the year of incline.

Has anyone considered that maybe the price point has been critical? Gamers are probably sick of paying $60 for a new game, and then only getting 10 hours of gameplay. This game is only $40 and gives 50-75 hours.

Tomorrow, for everyone on GOG:
http://af.gog.com/forum/general/div..._gogcom_bstatus_updateb/post661?as=1649904300

(posted 3hours ago):
We have an update for you :)

We are going live with Divinity: Original Sin tomorrow :)

We really want to apologize to everyone regarding the lack of updates but we wanted to be ABSOLUTELY sure that we would be able to get the game out to you guys and gals tomorrow :)

Sadly, they will apply regional pricing : 39.99$ or 39.99€

Now, for those who already play with the GOG kickstarter access:
Hi all,

Please re-download the patch for D: OS as we found an error that would delete your saves, regardless whether you chose to keep them or not, during the uininstall process.

Please make sure you have downloaded patch_divinity_original_sin_2.3.0.7.exe.

Thanks and sorry for doubleflagging :)

Looks like it's even outselling a Telltale adventure that's with new content and 50% off. Crazy stuff.
