Boxfags can burn in Gaben's furnace.
I like myself some pretty boxes, but I haven't bought one for years, since all of them is a steam version of the game. What's the point? I have to use Steam anyway. And I'd rather have the devs spend that money on the actual development.

It's still #1 on steam. Obviously it's the hard numbers that matter and not the relative sales, but still. I would not have expected this to happen. At all.

Truly the year of incline.
Heh. I'd be really surprised if it wasn't #1. It's the holliday season, AAA games don't get released in this period. The first semi high profile game release is Risen 3, and it's over a month from now. It's still a slow period, so there's a collosal difference between the #1 game now, and let's say #1 in september (especially around the estimated GTAV release date). So, if it wouldn't be #1 now, it would most likely be a flop.

Vincke tells me he ignored good advice to focus on developing a digital game in English and only worry about things like localization after your game is released.
Not even German? Ouch. :smug:

"It was a huge QA operation -- almost 70,000 testers -- but we didn’t have to spend as much money as we would have had to do otherwise, say if we had a traditional business arrangement with a publisher," says Vincke.
Minus backers, an answer to how many copies were sold through EA.

Yeah, seems like a bit under 50K. That's a lot more than expected.

So this mean they made something like 110K copies in the first two days after it came out- not sure how much they made since then.

I wonder if that includes purchases during the Steam summer sale.

That would explain the high number yes- after all, the game came out 2 or so hours before the end of the sale, so timeline-wise it makes sense that a lot of those 50K were sold then.

OTOH, they wouldn't be 'real' beta, or at least not for long.

I always tell people in germany, that they should watch films and play games in english. Otherwise it is the same if they would listen to a song translated into german. English is the lingua franca in modern times, so a good knowledge in this language should be a must, for everyone.

Not quite. The EA was running for a long time and even during the times of the larger AAA games. And with only mostly around 10 places behind Wasteland 2, so it was quite good.
50k would mean a aditional 1Million for the development of D:OS, and with 1 Milion Kickstarter that leaves 2 Million of previous investment? Or are the 4 Million without the EA and Kickstarter money?

But what i like about this article is that Swen recognises and states again the value of the beta/alpha testers, and perhaps the free beta will caught on by other developers.
(Swen has stated over and over again how good it was to use the Kickstarter and the closer development with the players / backers.)
InXile already has adopted this in Wasteland 2 development, and perhaps will make it in T:ToN. Perhaps this means an end to the beta for money and the chosen ones for the beta.
In this genre this would be a great thing to do.

I have to say to use the sommer hole was a very good decision for Larian. So i understand the rush that Larian had in the end phase.

Well, it's certainly in developers' best interest to keep repeating how valuable EA is to them, if only to make their most devoted customers happy. That said, I can certainly see the value it can have for games with high QA requirements, like these. Vince also had much good to say on the impact of EA feedback on AoD.

Looks like it's even outselling a Telltale adventure that's with new content and 50% off. Crazy stuff.
Keep in mind steam sorts by total revenue, not number of copies sold. So at full price, they could sell fewer copies and be listed ahead.

Eurogamer review: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-07-09-divinity-original-sin-review

Pretty funny review. Normally reviews of these kinds of games in mainstream press go like "Pretty cool but too hard. 7/10", while this one is basically a lot of complaints punctuated by 9/10. It's not too bad though, reviewer obviously played both D:OS as well as Ultima 7, so he knows what the important bits are at least.

Richard Cobbett. He's kind of a tard on occasion but he knows his shit.

Ooh, boxfags aren't gonna like this. The correct thing to do would be to make a deal like inXile did with Deep Silver. Filling their offices with boxes was pretty crazy.
"I would never again do all the boxed stuff, and I regret that we spent so much time on everything related to making a physical release happen."

I'm a dying breed.... :negative:

I hate to say it but that would severely minimize the amount I would pledge. I absolutely love the game but would only pay the $30-$40 for a digital only version, not the $100s I pledged for physical rewards. Yeah, I get it that the game itself matters most but those physical rewards do matter to my nostalgic self...

It's possible he meant physical release as in brick and mortar store release. Selling collectors edition boxes is cool, I wish I had one of Divos. Although it sounds like he wants to skip everything.

I can't understand all the attachment to cardboard considering you still have to use steam to download and install the game

It's not the game itself I care to have a physical disk of, it's the manuals, maps, trinkets, etc. that brings that ol' smile back to my face. The memories of opening those old Ultima game boxes somehow enhanced my enjoyment of them. Those "trinkets" added to the game world as I held them in my hands (relatively speaking in my case :P). The only comparison that comes quickly to mind is fine dinning where the presentation (mood, decor, service, etc.) is half the experience, not just the food itself.

Don't bother, newfags who only ever warez games and acquired from pirate bay won't understand the appeal of boxed copies.

Nostalgiafags will fail to understand how stupid they look with their overpriced steam download and manual that barely counts as a reference card
