Oh geez, people dare find something to criticize? They obviously have no idea what we're talking about. Fuck your smelly hot air of authority, the lay out is SHIT. As usual, JA2 to the rescue:
Yeah, and it plays great in widescreen.

Nigga please. Don't come with non-arguments. See widescreen mods for IE games for an analogue. If anything, widescreen is an even better excuse to tuck everything in one bar. Common fucking sense.

Annie and Brian should keep their little UI designer on a leash. It's obvious you are one clueless little shit stain.

It looks like whatever bullshit made-up reason you have for the layout, a game from 1998 clearly didn't need it. Fucking smelly snake oil salesman.
:hmmm:

What are those arrow icons at the bottom left?

Yep. A seamless transition. Common fucking sense indeed.

Nobody cares if there's stretching of textures on the weapons boxes or buttons, just make sure the weapons inside don't stretch.
Do you really think that people would be okay with the UI stretching when the game is played in widescreen? Has any game ever got away with that?

The portraits are on the left and that's fine, but the rest of the layout makes me want to ragequit just looking at it.
UI design is serious business it seems. I'm not posting to defend myself, I'll fix things if people give a good reason for it, not just posting pics of jagged alliance w/ zombie hands and saying "Do that!".

Maybe I'll move the menu buttons on the bottom right and somehow incorporate them with the bottom middle stuff. That might limit the things looking scattered around the screen.

But the whole school theme is a little meh. It does seem to fit in with the rest of the game's theme, but unfortunately the theme of a middle school just isn't too exciting. If it has to occur there that doesn't mean the whole theme has to be based on it.
That's your personal preference so I can't really do much about that. To be honest it's tough to make papers and post-it's look exciting, but I'll see what I can do.

New one is fine. I like both AoD one and this iteration. Not bad to see gui visually advancing a bit too, along with everything else.
It looks original.
Some details and whatnot can be improved even more of-course but thats just normal iterations on a good concept.

Some grittiness should be there, not only because "how things would really go" but to enhance the feel of the apocalypse of the setting. Be careful not to do too much since youre right about things not being so run down generally.

Now make it 1024x768 without scaling the UI and I think you'll see my point.

Well in principle, it looks like all that needs done is to shrink the text box to about half its width. Can't you just have the game call for two different UI's -- one for 16:9 and one for 4:3 depending on what resolution the player sets?

Example:

Knotanalt, I can't quote you fast enough, you're giving me too many gems to work with. I missed this one but it's my favorite.

Yeah when you have a game from 20 years ago you can't magically stretch its textures to be bigger than the biggest ones they have. Crazy.

Since I play on a widescreen and 90% of the games I play are not widescreen, I think yes they won't care.

Eh, speak for yourself.

You don't play many games do you?

For example, Ageods American Civil War scales very nicely with the resolution.

Do you guys really bitching about the look of a work in progress gui instead of the supposed gameplay features the ui shows?

I mean, is the gui really THAT bad? It's a fucking gui. It has to be functional and it looks exactly like that. You will be used to it in 5 minutes inplay. It's not a Paradox strategy game.

And I'm sure the gui will look more pleasant at the end of the development like AoDs gui changed, too. I would rather see them to focus their development time on something more important than let the gui look more like JA2.

Eh, speak for yourself.
So you scale a brown background box or a text area and now it's game over? I am almost certain no one will even realize they are being scaled :?
I will probably notice. And won't be able to stop noticing while I play. :M

Anyway...this is an UI mockup for a game that barely exists, we are running out of things to bitch about.

But it really is ugly as fuck

You can but it's a lot of work. I'm not even sure if any developer has even attempted it, since 16:9 and 4:3 aren't the only aspect ratios.

1024 x 768 6.45% 4:3
1152 x 864 1.14% 4:3
1280 x 720 0.72% 16:9
1280 x 768 0.67% 15:9
1280 x 800 5.17% 16:10
1280 x 960 1.07% 4:3
1280 x 1024 13.63% 4:3
1360 x 768 1.46% 16:9
1366 x 768 6.17% 16:9
1440 x 900 9.50% 16:10
1600 x 900 3.84% 16:9
1600 x 1200 0.90% 4:3
1680 x 1050 18.02% 16:10
1920 x 1080 19.39% 16:9
1920 x 1200 7.36% 16:10
Other 4.48%

Who actually is programming the engine for Dead State? Is it the same people that did AoD, or is there someone at Double Bear?

I rest my case. Either a troll (which I'd rate 9/10) or brain dead. Nobody else could argue to the contrary for that transition.

So you like a bar stretching across the entire bottom of the screen that serves no purpose, and incredibly tiny buttons that have no readability what so ever. Do I look like a troll?

Also that noise meter is fucking huge and is the most ridiculous thing I've seen. Who the fuck needs a huge noise meter sticking out like a sore thumb in a Turn-Based game? It can be handled far subtly and elegantly.

For fuck's sake, really. This game has disaster written all over it.

Confirmed. You are brain dead. And read what? Health bars? R00FLES!

And aren't you the fucking GUI artist? Deal with it. Make readable ones per resolution. That's how shit worked in the olden days of 3D gaming before everyone moved on to Flash GUIs. FFS. I pity Annie and Brian. They don't even know what they don't know.

I would expect, in something slightly more modern, for those items to scale in such a way as to fit its container, as well as the container to fit the resolution.

But. Carry on.

How is the installer for the game? I demand that the installer is more flashy than the cheapo generic installers we get these days. I DEMAND an animated installer like in the old Westwood games or those ones that had lots of background stuff like Activision did in Interstate 76 or Battlezone. Those were the fucking days!

Stick the GUI debates up your arses! The decline started with the rise of the installshield program!
