So wymyn fucking cook, Negroes nigg (far away from the Homeland), and gays fucking don't exist, at least not officialy!
Fantasy isn't based on middle ages. If it was everyone wouldn't be able to read adn write, there wouldn't be rigorous state structure with rigidly stated and enforced laws forcing government officials to do theirs jobs according to law, and there wouldn't be more freedom than in modern EU societies. (For example, right to move and resettle from one area to another would be highly restricted.)

Homosexuality and black were quite common during Roman empire. Drugs and bribery were also common. (Roman wine was quite strongly mixed with narcotics.) Kinda wonder why there is no Rome the RPG inspired by HBO.
Women in armies were quite common in non industrialized societies. Non industrialized societies didn't have cheap quality plate armors and high quality metals readily available. Fantasy has both.
Yeah. Fantasy's whole selling point to fledgling/poor writers is that you don't need to base it on anything - at least that's the assumption. Read a few other Fantasy novels, check out Ivanhoe and Robin Hood and you're all set to be an expert writer. Add blood and guts if you don't want to be blamed to be a prude like Tolkien, and don't forget to include some sexy scenes to make it all more exciting.

Here's what puzzles me about character Cole. He has a mind of 10 year old, yet he goes around cutting peoples throats? How did he become such a psychopath? That's horrific, yet Gaider believes (for good reason) its unacceptable to romance him. The hypocrisy is crazy.

  • While hiding from his father, Cole was desperately trying to keep his younger sister quiet to protect where they were hiding. While covering her mouth to keep her from making any noise, he accidently smothered her to death.

Ok, really? What's with the unnecessary, absurd drama, Gayder? Mommy didn't show you enough love as a kid? Daddy touched you places?

Oh, FFS.

Somebody watched Quigley Down Under and took away the weakest part of the movie...

Shouldn't all these characters' backstories be revealed via in game dialogue for maximum emotional impact? By reading all that in advance I'm already going to be pretty desensitized until October, that I won't be affected when I finally play the game. Why are they spoiling so much character info?

he accidently smothered her to death.

There was a similar scene in an old movie (can't remember which one).
Gaider must have seen it.
In the Pianist, there's a Jewish woman who smothers her crying baby while they're hiding from the Germans.

Much more plausible. She's already holding the baby, so there's no shift in the weight she's carrying. Infants are also extraordinarily vulnerable to smothering - they have so little air stored in their lungs that they'll go unconscious incredibly fast, and from there they die so soon after that short pauses in breathing relating to their sleeping position is the main source of SIDS deaths. But even aside from that, if you've got an adult carrying a kid (wouldn't need to be an infant), then it's many times more plausible that fear and frozen muscles could stop you from noticing that the kid has passed out.

(also, please nobody take the 20-30 seconds thing as indicating that it's safe to smother someone for a shorter period than that - brain damage starts up much earlier).

Bioware did take Angts/Fabulous characters design too far, but the sad thing is that heroes needs to be recognizable.
Especially today, when people start complaining " Oh how cliche that character is! Couldn't they make them more orginal?"

Sad thing is that various personality types have been fleshed out in various fantasy settings by various levels of authors.
What does this leave us? Frigging sexuality on appearance.
I bet that people would complain that Dorian would be just another dashing male archetype, without his homosexuality and fruity look by masses and codex. Hell even ugly elven chick would be just another elven archer with toymboyish quality without lesbian aspect.
This need to be original/twisty/deep leads many writers put more unneccesity personality quirks by bad to avarage authors who don't know how to develope characters without special backstory or odd element in the genre.

There will be no more drunken sultry dwarf fighters nor noble shining knights anymore, but MYYYY PARENTS ARE DEEEEEAD characters or LOOK I HAVE SPECIAL QUIRK!

Still I wait how they handle new characters growth even if signs aren't promising.

Edit: The truth is that heroes need to look special at laest a bit, but nowdays they took it too far or in nonsense direction.

Sexuality isn't a defining trait, honestly. People obsess so much over it. The only good gay/bi characters are the ones that seldom/subtly show it, or show it in a 'mature' way. Dorian is flamboyantly fucking gay, it's an honest joke. It's like trying to design a character around their favorite color and expecting something more than a caricature to come out instead. I'm sure after playing DA3 we'll only be able to describe Dorian by his costume, his profession, his role, and the fact he's gay. Fuck having a personality.
It is defining trait for Bioware audience. These are people that spend whole their lives thinking about sex in one way or another.

Yeah, if there's one thing I am noticing on the internet in 2014 it's that many, many people think being gay is the most important thing in their lives. And they don't just want you to accept it or not attack them for it, they want you to think it's SO fucking awesome and pat them on the back for it. "Please tell me where you stick your dick" you say, and upon being told "male asshole" you shake their hand and say "good show mate, excellent work!"

So, the consensus at bioware is that, to make a character "original" and "deep", it's gotta have a stupidly tragic past and it's gotta be gay. Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo-kay. Makes sense.

Everything they're releasing about this game looks pretty bad but I'm still going to play it. Probably late next year though after Eternity/D:OS/Wasteland/Witcher though.

I couldn't really care less about the romance shit they put in the game or the sexuality of the characters because I'm not going to play that content. I wish they weren't catering to a target audience of biodrone deviants but at least so far they keep that shit optional.

"Also?"

Not a sentence.

Keep up the good work, Bioware.

Damn, you should have said that earlier. Gaider's friends should have known that before trying it on him. Now it's too late and we are left to pay the price.

I can't help, but laugh now.

Not only did make only one brown guy for so suppose diversity promoting company, but they made him the only male homosexual.
Absolutely glorious, GLORIOUS I say.

Well done Bioware

It's sad that those people always complain about "not enough diversity/inclusion/wymyn" etc.
The writers should focus on wirting good and interesting characters. Not black, gay, female ones.
I really don't mind if some characters are gay or black or even female. My favourite Game of Thrones char was Renly Baratheon. But because he was believeable and I personally found him to be extremely sympathetic, and wasn't included just because the SJW community wanted more gay characters.
But unfortunately, Bioware and others keep listening to those "concerns" as they call it more and more.

you hurt real human beings

Tumblr is scary. The internet is scary. Only on the internet can people take imagination and twist it into mass, violent crime.

Good writing like it's cousin intelligence aren't trendy anymore, thus you won't receive what you want unless you make that stuff yourself.
Corporations are like whores, they spread their legs for anyone with bling.

But I suspect that you know this already, but still complain and not take action.
Just enjoy the trainwreck like everyone else here.

As if SP (and anyone with at least a 2-digit IQ) hadn't been making fun of the "Token" practice for the last 18 years. Sigh. Some people never learn.
