Goddammit...

Apparently a couple characters ("Cassandra" and "Cullen") have been declared as officially straight by Bioware. Because this is more important than anything actually relating to gameplay, girls on Tumblr are going apeshit, many accusing Bioware of "heterosexism" and threatening to not play the game.

This isn't a comprehensive "best of" or anything, it's literally just shit I've found from scrolling halfway down the first set of loaded results.
Funny that Gaider would accuse his detractors and critics of only caring about the characters' sexuality. Maybe he should take a look at his own fanbase.

So when it’s Dorian, it’s 100% okay for him to be a massive and blatant stereotype, one more fabulous and witty camp gay, because sometimes stereotypes are true and that’s okay.
But when it’s Cassandra, we absolutelycould not have a butch LI for women, that is too much of a stereotype, no way, not going to happen, that is positively unthinkable.
But this totally isn’t anything against butch women. Okay.
ok i guess i just thought cass would at least be bi
i’m so heartbroken i really am idk man i just
Cassandra Pentaghast is straight, there are twice as many male companions as female, and practically everyone is pro-chantry or neutral.
Ngl, highly displeased over here.
do not fucking tell me being upset about cassandra is wrong. do not test me.
I’m probably one of the very few people out there who was hoping that Cass would be asexual, but I certainly didn’t expect her to be. I am a little bummed that she’s straight, but no matter. My Inquisitor and her will become besties like my Warden and Morrigan!
they made Cassandra STRAIGHT?! ARE YOU FUCKING SHITTING ME, BIOWARE?!
I’m not gonna talk about it after this but all I will say is this: of course the “main” female LI is heterosexual. Of course. Because we can get thrown a bone but why would we get someone important? That would be “unrealistic.”

Are you kidding? I put 2 1/2 years of my life into this fandom, and other than the great people I met, it's been a colossal waste of time. I worked myself up over a character I can't romance. You think I'm going to hang around here and watch everyone else squee and gush over him (as they SHOULD)? No way. That's too f*cking painful. It means too much for me. It's already starting to sink in and my throat is getting tight, and that's still with the shock still in place.
So I will have to cut ties with this fandom and try to make a home somewhere else... but I've learned my lesson; I'll wait to hear confirmation on the other characters' sexuality so I don't fall in love with someone else (not likely since I don't like any of the options except maybe Blackwall). God this practically kills the game for me.
I'll keep in touch on Twitter and via PM and elsewhere It's been fun!
It is important for the industry as a whole that this game must fail.

Fucking shit, I read a few pages of that (2093 pages) thread about one character. It's really disturbing how fucking stupid and out of touch these people are.
What the fuck is one supposed to think of this?
It seems unproductive to you. I love all RPGs, but Dragon Age are by far my favorite because of the level of depth in relationships you can have with your companions. I loved Mass Effect, but Dragon Age was even better and I replayed it more because of that. Part of those relationships include romancing them. The sex is really not that great, it's a quick scene where you see nothing and the fanart is always much better if you're looking for straight up porn fantasies. The romances are what make it so unique, because each character falls in love differently and that is interesting and fun to explore.
Gender and sexual orientation representation is a big deal because it's so lacking in other games. It means a lot to me to get to know so many strong, diverse women in one game. Being able to play as my own gender and romance my own gender is a rare experience in games, too.
Gameplay is important to me, but it is the characters who keep me coming back for more.
I would think that story and relationships are mostly done by now, making them easier to discuss.
Gameplay elements may still be subject to change at this point, and devs like to avoid talking about things that aren't finished. I could be wrong, just my guess.
Honestly, combat is my least favorite part of a game. I'm much more interested in stories, characters, relationships, and plot. So while I'm excited that Inquisition is looking to be the right sort of combat for me (yay tactical camera), I'm ultimately going to want to talk about what interests me. I think this may be the case for many other players as well.
However, there has been plenty of discussion about combat--check out the Q&A (links here on this sub) and search for the Crestwood and E3 demos on YouTube. But without knowing more, it's hard to have real discussions or debate about it, and the devs can't release too much yet because the game is still in alpha and a lot could change.
I think it's easier to become emotionally invested in a romance than it is with game mechanics. Though I did neary fall off my chair when they announced you get horses, but still. It's just not as exciting, or as much to speculate about, or make up stories and concepts around.
I can understand where it's coming from. I guessmost people want to be reassured that they're not walking towards a dead end when trying to romance someone. Like Aveline or Sebastian in DA2. Gameplay is really important, but it is something you can figure out as you go. I mean I can get excited about the crafting system right now, or I can get excited about it once I get my hands on the game.
You're supposed to come to the conclusion that people without direction in their lives are better off turning to Buddhism, Taoism or an Abrahamic religion rather than morphing into weird-ass creeps. Many people can deal with the increasing loss of human contact and the grounded touch with reality people used to have before the industrialization, some don't and they end up complaining that they can't awkwardly fakedate a virtual character, read fifty shades of grey or spend all their free time on MMOs. When you turn to video games not for silly fun between friends or to have something entertaining to do during downtime like you would read a book or watch a film but as a replacement for your love-life, lack of friends and low status to make you feel empowered I think it has crossed the line to the unhealthy. That's the kind of people who Bioware cater to and it just so happens that many of the socially disenfranchised people are a part of the queer section of the population. What the fuck is one supposed to think of this?
