Grey Wardens were clearly based on the Night's Watch in GoT. At least it was something.

The Darkspawn were gnarly though. Born from the deepest nightmares, propagating endlessly by dragging women captives underground, barfing in their mouths and raping them until they turn into giant monstrosities, birthing hundreds of spawn like engorged ticks. That's just going on everywhere, all the time, waiting for a demon-dragon to awaken and lead them to the surface and exterminate all life. The first game said there were seven(?) dragons, and the game involved the fifth so there were two more. Their appearance had accelerated so the writers clearly meant for that to build to an apocalyptic showdown.

Gaider threw that all away because modern writers don't like 'evil monster races.' That's racist. So he wrote a boring story about evil religion and made mages an allegory for gay rights. The Grey Wardens present an interesting dilemma, how to get disparate factions to settle their BS to fight the end of the world? Do you allow werewolves to slaughter elves because you think they'll make better shock troops? The Veilguard have no choices to make. They just fight the evil white guys.

DA2 made you an observer to the story rather than a participant. DA1 really let you make some interesting choices, in the second and third game everything important is out of your hands. You can't stop Anders from blowing up ersatz-Christianity, and the demon invasion in Inquisition is meaningless. Someone must have told Gaider he had to have an actual villain in that game so of course he picks an evil white guy. The Darkspawn were a reminder of man's folly, the demons are just pawns of a bad guy. Gaider also ditched the monotheistic savior religion and replaced it with boring, standard fantasy gods.

A faceless evil consuming the world isn't great for conversations, but like zombies and post-apoc fiction the point is to create situations where the social order is upended and then explore the possibilities this creates. The darkspawn were also impossible to rehabilitate and modern writers love giving villains sympathetic stories.

People complained that the darkspawn were just orcs, as if there was anything wrong with that. They were cool and their supposed lore was cool too, the result of sin itself twisting and disfiguring people because ancient evil gods encouraged them to attack heaven.

Wonder what reveal Deadname will give them now that we know all the old lore was wrong

I agree, everyone who complained about Darkspawn was a retard. They were a pretty unique and unnerving race of antagonists; less like orcs and more like demons from hell come to punish mankind for their sin in the worst ways possible.

There will be no reveal because Bioware has been trying to ignore the Darkspawn. Even the main antagonist of Inquisition, one of the progenitors of darkspawn, uses some shitty crystal zombies as his army, when the right group to use was there all along. There's also no Maker anymore and Andraste will turn out to be an elder god baby like Morrigan's ugly kid, if she's mentioned at all. There is a higher likelyhood that the game will have gay musicals and dance numbers than revealing anything about the Black City, the Second Sin, or even the Elder Gods.

Bioware catalogue of games, wholesale in its entirety = Load/ Black album era Meh-tallica. At best, it's an introduction to the good stuff, mostly made by somebody else. At worst, it's stuff industry-processed into something for people who don't actually quite LIKE that stuff.

And some incarnation of Bob Rock had been with them from the very beginning. Remember that even Baldur's gate only came to be when Obsidian's now CEO suggested doing a party-based D&D game rather than the MMORPG/RTS they were pitching to Interplay -- two of the biggest trends at the tail end of the 1990s.

There's totally a parallel universe in which Feargie slipped in the shower that fateful morning, broke his leg and called in sick. One in which Bioware never got the street cred for co-saving RPGs (and finding their former hit formula in the process by accident). But one where they'd been desperately chasing market trends from day #1. I mean, Origins was pitched as a "back to the roots" kind of project barely an European Football Championship after BG had shipped.

Says it all, really.

I agree that the lore behind the origin of the Darkspawn was badass. It would have made for a really awesome doomed world setting.

I'm a little late to the party. On what page can I see the repugnant female characters in this game? Or is that coming out June 11th?

Patience. In good time.

The Kodex Korporate Kapo of course immediately changed the thread title to reflect the name change like a good little lickspittle. Probably got orders in his latest press kit to do so.

seriously tho. naming game "dreadwolf" was probably most creative thing bioware did in decades. so of course they were scared of their own bravery and quickly retreated to familiar banality.

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf transitioned to Veilguard.

Isn't calling yourself Trans Woman akin to calling yourself Fake Woman? What's the point

Also, I think these hashtags work like cheat codes in games, if you put the right ones you will immediately get social points and even get promoted. #transrights and then randomly put #blacklivesmatter, boom, level up
He isn't special enough if he just call himself a woman. It's all about getting enough attention to coom through their AGP.

Multiple pronouns are most definitely in. Only question is if the game lets you coerce lesbian NPCs into having sex with your troon character who has a dick. I gather that's what troons are into.

Most male characters (excluding the ugly bald elf) looked ok, but the females almost always have either some weird detail to their faces (Cassandra's eyes, the cheekbones of that black mage, SERA), or they've been downgraded (Morrigan, Cassandra). Leliana's face, despite looking the least offputting, looks really bony from some angles even when she's still uncorrupted.

But then, when you show off some pretty models it won't even take a second before some bitter troon pops up and scolds you for making wank material. The pozzed game developing companies are full of them and their "allies" who try to apply their ideology to everything they make.

The description for Veilguard really tells how much the series changed.

Origins and 2 had all this focus on politics , disputes between races , mage snd templars and resolving old grudges.

Then Veilguard is all about forming your little group to fight Evil. Bioware knows that they can't write a satisfactory conclusion to ANY of the major conflicts, see Templar-Mage civil war , so they're going for the Mass Effect 2 route and bank of all their chips on companions being well liked.
Erm akshuly Dragon Age was always about feeling wholesome lovely fuzzy big chungus YOU CHUD! :bioware:

The sudden rebranding and focus shift to having sex with your companions makes me think June 11th is going to be the most embarassing gameplay reveal in Bioware's history.

Dragon Age is about fucking forest witches so you can trap the soul of a dragon god, and numerous lore dumps about not-Catholicism where the Christ figure is replaced by Joan of Arc.

Everything else can be disregarded as generic garbage.

I can't wait for the unavoidable comparisons with BG3.
If I was some vidya journo scribbler I'd write an article comparing Dreadwolf to BG3 just to fuck with BioWare devs.
>Dragon Age: Veilguard has its merits, but it's no Baldur's Gate 3

"BG3 lets you have sex with a bear; why won't Veilguard let you have sex with the Dreadwolf?"
