Dragon Age then: Embark on a classic journey to save the world from evil.

Dragon Age now:

Apparently she's one of the writers that BioWare fired last year.

There was supposed to be some sort of boycott over the firings but EA shills said it wasn't very "fanlike" and the fandom agreed to give the friendly megacorp more money.

It's facepalms all the way down.

:deathclaw:

Well I can see why they let her go - she's still using the outdated binary term 'bisexual' instead of 'pansexual'.

:happytrollboy:

Must be a filthy womb-haver too.

Yeah, DAO had pretty neat options, apart from kill demon, save a child. Trading little girl's body to the desire demon, bargaining for connor's soul, selling elves to Tevinter, Loghain's fate, after all. No bioware sequels came even close to such choices. In inquisition you literally have only good outcomes and praises from all around you.
I don't remember who it was, but one of the BioWare devs mentioned some time ago on Twitter (tweets now deleted) how he didn't believe that players should be allowed to make morally questionable choices in a game. Paging Roguey in case he knows who it was, but yeah. Peak clown world.

technically, you can fuck up things in the war table missions, but the bad outcomes are just text fluff and not much else. you're locked out of things and that's it.

On a more general note, there are also other devs that have occasionally talked about how most players don't go for evil playthroughs hence in turn fewer resources being allocated for evil content. Which is a travesty imho, but yeah.

The issue with an evil playthrough is the belief that players "miss out" on content: being evil means you sacrifice stuff like a potential companion, an item, quests, etc, because you did something that feels like a "bad thing". It's both related to game design and also in the case of rpgs with the satanic panic movement caused by conservatives: designers have more or less forced themselves into designing stuff for the "hero".

Which in turn creates a negative feedback loop of less players hence less resources hence less content & repeat.

I wish more devs realized that missable content can be a good thing overall as long as there's a balance upheld between that and playthrough length. Increases the replayability of games while also offering to the one-playthrough players the ability to better curate their experience through divergent content.

I think this is exaggerated, especially if you're talking about it still existing today. The SP forced a lot of revisions, but only temporarily, and even then they were very similar to how they were before.

You got some cool Planescape lore out of it, half-orcs got dropped from official materials, and Chick made some Bible tracts. Oh well.

But it's 40-odd years later and the average reddit whore is dressing like a literal demon for her Tinder profile when she's not filming porn of herself for OnlyFans. Baldur's Gate 2 was about being a child of a murder deity from Hell, and now Baldur's Gate 3 is about the same thing, but with more gore and gay bear sex. Even in 2014, Inquisition had openly gay party members and sex with some demon-looking party member with giant horns. All the BG3 PR was about the edgiest content possible for the last year of its development. There was zero fear of "satanic panic".

Why even make a RPG at that point? Might as well just make an action-adventure with awkward sex scenes.

RPG devs: Nobody does an evil playthrough.

Also RPG devs: Our evil playthrough is where you're a cartoonish dick and you're also stupid too.

Modern stuff is surface edgy imho. Gore is already omnipresent in popular media and that sort of sexualized content nowadays is less edgy as it is gratuitous and seen positively as something emancipatory rather than decadent. Just a cheap way for devs to market their games as being overtly 'mature' while in all actuality they're just infantile crap.

You guys (probably) haven't noticed, but apparently the biggest-thirst trap so far is the old white dude, to the point where he's raking in the fanart/rule 34 and is even... Kotaku's official husbando?

What is happening?

:shredder:
People would rather fuck the old decrepit white man instead of the diverse characters

What about Lucanis? He's white, but also bland. Looks like Blackwall's skinnier brother.

lucanis.jpg

How is this white? He looks like an arab to me

He looks more spanish/italian than arab(don't fucking tell me there's no difference)

His surname is also Dellamorte apparently (which is italian sounding, although in italian it would be Della Morte)
Josephine surname in Inquisiton is Montilyet. Purest white European stock:

Though at least they didn't give her cloaca, which I think is the case for her species.
Githyanki and githzerai, as originally described in the 1981 Fiend Folio, were descended from humans. Another humanoid race called the gith were introduced in the Dark Sun campaign setting in 1991 and described as appearing to be a "peculiar mixture of elf and reptile", although there wasn't any mention of their reproductive methods at this time. The 1993 Monstrous Manual included an entry for gith and stated they were egg layers, which could have been explicitly introduced in some other Dark Sun product published by then or might have been an inference from the description of gith as appearing reptilian. In 1994, Dark Sun adventure module DSE2 Black Spine was published, and it was based around the gith being descended from a group of githyanki who had planned to conquer Athas only to be attacked by githzerai, resulting in them losing contact with their brethren and degenerating into an "elf and reptile" appearance. When Monte Cook wrote A Guide to the Astral Plane, released in 1996, either he or someone else at TSR must have noticed that gith are egg-laying (per the Monstrous Manual) and descended from githyanki (per DSE2 Black Spine), which led to the retcon of githyanki reproducing via egg-laying. Although the text of A Guide to the Astral Plane claims this might have been caused by illithid experiments, since the githzerai apparently have normal human reproductive systems and splintered from the githyanki after liberation from the illithids, this explanation does not make sense; the only alternative explanation offered is that the githyanki were altered by "exposure to some strange astral energies".

Really this is something that could and should have been reverted since then.
As an interesting little factoid, GRRM designed the githyanki.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dying_of_the_Light_(Martin_novel)
"It mentions a race of beings called the githyanki. This name was taken from the novel for use with a much different race in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game."
D&D lifted the name.

I'm sure the conservative fears were totally paranoid and unwarranted. Nobody would ever take things too far and put literal faggot tranny demons in front of children to groom them into sexual ideas. Fucking conservatards and their paranoia...

She. He. Doesn't matter to me. You are a pussy, though. You're afraid of men on make up.

Those are the people that care about Dragon Age. Trannies, women, homos and subversive Jews.
Which ones are you, Fedora Master? Troon? Considering you liked Inquisition. Troon Joos?

Quite funny - she's a veteran writer of Bioware. She worked there since 2006, her LinkedIn bio says she was a writer for DAO. When she was fired, she posted "Experienced writer looking for a job" and Gaider answered, that she created Varric.

You're right, she's one of the main writers of the entire series. She's been at BioWare for 17 years before the mass layoff.

Sometimes I wonder about writers in the games industry. Why they do it, knowing what a shit deal it is for them.

Hmmmm. Seems to be below industry average, but that'll have to depend on experience.

Why does Valve allow this? Of all the big gaming platforms they seem like a big outlier in this regard.
Steam forums has most of same moderation tools as other forums. The difference is that developers actually have to pay a person to delete all these individual threads on Steam forums, instead of having a bot or "unpaid" janny do it.

They can't keep up lol.
Same tools but not the same rules.
On reddit you get permaban for "hate speech" calling a character tranny.
On steam I actually got my reviews and posting rights unbanned by steam admins several times, since criticizing pronouns & what not does not break steam rules, and those override any local mods bullshit.
