OK, I saved Lucanis and this is the limit of what I can take of this slop. My save file says 12 hours, so realistically it's about 8-9 as I did keep it running multiple times while walking my dog or making dinner. Not a meaningless amount of time was spent reading codex entries as well.
I gave it an honest try - and I kinda wish I didn't. Game deleted and cleansed from my system. I would never buy this shit, even for 5€. No wonder it's already being given out for free on so many fronts.
I'm honestly struggling to say anything positive about the game at this point. First of all - it's not an RPG in any way, there's just nothing to role play. You might as well press 1 in every single conversation - it's going to have the same outcome.
I guess the positives would be:
- The game does look pretty at times, when you're not fighting and there's no purple on screen - but it's kind of an illusion honestly.
- There's no major frame drops. Whatever fps you get - it tends to stay stable in that region.
- (for the time I played) The wokeness is not as in your face as I thought it would be, but of course I didn't even get to the tranny during my play time.
- The only time I saw anything to do with pronouns was during character creation and when placing the mirror on a table in my room. And the mirror option isn't really forced, it's just 1 of 6 options - so not that big of a deal, but why even have it there, why make the only role play option in the whole game - be one about being fucking trans.
- I guess Solas is decently done - conversations with him where the only ones where I wasn't mashing space as soon as I read the line. The voice acting (for Solas) is good, the story revolving around him is not complete drivel and it does have the ability to keep your attention.
- The "back" side button on a mouse works for going back in menus, which allows you to keep your hands on WASD comfortably. And yes - I am actively looking for positives at this point.
So concerning the visuals. As I said - the game does look pretty at times, even at lower settings, BUT - the illusion fades once you realize just how much assets are constantly reused. Every single city in the world (and the fade...) has the same fucking wooden box in it. You enter a city - enjoy every single shelve and door copy pasted on every identically looking building. There's just no variety - you're constantly looking at the sama vazes, planks, boxes, etc. You can also disable the UI bloom in a setting files - but it doesn't help that much, since the purple color is like bloom in itself.
The writting is as bad as many people hoped. Sadly it affected even the codex entries. I tried reading every single codex entry at first, but I quickly realized that it's just low effort blog posts. Seriously - some codex entries straight up talk you, like you're reading a fucking cooking recipe online. Other than codex entries, the writing is just bland. Most dialogues are a sentence or two long; everything is always very positive - there's no way to be mean or condescending to anyone.
The biggest issue in my opinion - the blatant fucking insertion of romance at the worst possible times. I didn't subject myself to remembering specific lines, but imagine a dialogue where some chicks brother is missing and she's almost in tears thinking about him - your dialogue options: 1. yes, 2. yes, 3.yes, 4. "you look pretty when you care" (THAT'S A FUCKING ROMANCE OPTION, WORDED LIKE THAT AT A TIME LIKE THIS.) I'm not going to go into detail about the writing anymore, as basically every single conversation or plot point can be nitpicked at endlessly. Basically everything feels stupid, childish and unoriginal. A lot of cliches as well, like a FUCKING ELVEN GOD having some braindead darkspawn cunt carry the most important dagger in the world. Ohh and also the all-powerful lyrium dagger that a god made - well they'll just craft another one, but with RED LYRIUM (cut to black.)
I found myself basically spamming space most of the time, to get through the conversations faster.
The gameplay itself is click Mouse1, block with Mouse2. Parry when blocking at the right time (insanely wide window, even on nightmare.) Every 30-60 seconds you can use abilities from your companions. Most of the time you're just gonna use the same combo of apply weakened/sundered -> detonate weakened/sundered, repeat ad nauseam.
There's essentially 3 builds in the game - a rogue, a fighter and a mage. You can respec freely anytime, as long as you're not in combat. But whatever you respec on a class - it still feels the same. You keep clicking the mouse button and you keep feeling bored.
Eventually, even thought the early game fights go pretty fast, you reach a point where everything is a fucking bullet sponge. Maybe it's some red skull mechanic as someone mentioned, but holy shit it just completely sucks the life out of an already lifeless game.
Enemy design? Copy, paste, paste, paste, paste. Ohh and there's fucking rock monsters with flamethrowers and rifles. Yup, FLAMETHROWERS AND RIFLES. They're not made out of hi-tech plastic or nothing, they're just magical rocks - but there's no mistaking a fucking flamethrower. Once the enemies get tougher though - the whole screen is covered in flying particles and colors.
Loot system? LOL. Chest marked on map = item. That's pretty much it. Some small chests sometimes have an item in it, not sure if it's random.
You also can't switch any equipment during a fight, and they use the term "fight" quite liberally. Some homeless elve screaming for help 5 continents away constitutes a fight and locks you out of changing equipment. You got into a fight against a lightning resistant mob and your weapons do lightning damage? If it's one mob - it's going to take a little longer. If it's a whole group (SPOILER: IT IS A GROUP, ALWAYS, AND THERE'S WAVES) - you're going to take breaks between each monster as you can't change your weapon and your abilities takes 30-60 seconds to recharge - same for your companions.
The pacing of the game is also completely horrible - you spend most of your time traveling through corridors, be it a literal corridor or an alley between buildings. Some quests are just 10 minutes of walking until you reach an end point and get XP. All of the quest levels are linear, with quite obvious places to "secrets" (yeah that chest marked on a map is secret as fuck.) There's some hub levels that allow for more non-linear exploration, but even that is linear in its own way, as a lot of the paths are locked behind you doing other paths or other quests first. The movement is also so fucking anoying. You jump to a ledge - prepare to hold W until you get up, or this fucking retard is letting go.
For the people wanting to try this game for the laughs and cringe - don't. There's just nothing worth remembering. The game is bland as fuck. The wokeness is likely concentrated in specific parts of the game and they are for sure not early. There's also no graphical glitches of any kind, no cringe animations to edit etc.
Seems like they decided to include trannies in the game - and then took the most careful approach to make the game as boring as possible, so that the "wrong" audience dies of boredom long before they get to the outrageous "so, I'm non-binary" stuff.
