At least it isn't MP only "arena" FPS, like Toxikk.

You mean at least it isn't like another game that's meant to be completely different?

Codextard logic in action.

It looks completely reliant on nostalgia, only namedropping old FPSes and heavily borrowing visually from Heretic, Quake 1 and some Lithtech.

No innovation to be seen, level design seems to fall somewhere between atrocious and nonexistent, and from visual PoV old (Quake 1&2, Lithtech) 3D had the advantage of fluidity over contemporary mature 2.5D, but sacrifices had to be made and it looked poorly t in comparison - nowadays it not only offers absolutely no advantage over modern 3D if you want full 3D, but there seems to be many community made Q1 maps using vanilla assets that nevertheless leave it in the dusk dust, visually.

Soundtrack is somewhat reminiscent of Q1, but that's what YT is for.

The game Toxikk is ripping off while pretending to be new and unique, Unreal Tournament 3, has SP component using same bots.

Basically, they are charging for a featureless version of a better game. You have to be really stupid to not see that.

But then again, Codexturd logic.

No, you just pulled that out of your ass. The game never pretended to be anything but an arena shooter in the vein of Unreal Tournament. To be a rip off of Unreal Tournament is the entire raison d'etre of the whole fucking thing, same with Reflex vis Quake Arena.

Did you even play the game?

Even the weapons feel like slightly modded versions (not for the better) of Unreal Tournament. There is absolutely nothing original about the weapons themselves, forget everything else. Hell, I am pretty sure Unreal 2 (not MP) had better flame thrower.

Also, new Unreal Tournament is free, made by community. If Toxikk was an MP game with SP component, at least people like me could be arsed to buy it for SP itself. But the MP offers absolutely NOTHING over the free UT.

EDIT: Since I am currently playing Unreal 2, took a screenshot. Feels so much satisfying to use this thing.

The quality of the game itself is besides the point. Your argument was that the game is shit simply for being what it is, even though it's main selling point is precisely that it is a clone of old school arena shooters. The tag line of the game is "let's frag like it's 1999", what the hell were you expecting?

At least it doesn't look like ironic retro vomit.

Feel free to quote me where I said it was "shit".

Also, my argument is that it does absolutely NOTHING new and is basically a re-skin of Unreal Tournament. It's charging you for what is already available for free (and is being created by Epic+community themselves).

"Let's frag like it's 1999." Game has matchmaking that won't let you play against higher skilled players while the demo doesn't even contain server browser. Was that 1999 from alternate reality? Maybe the reality with evil Justice League?

That tag line is to fool suckers who want to pay for an average re-skinned mod of Unreal Tournament. I ain't no sucker.

Just an FYI. Download UDK and you will instantly be able to create a simple Unreal Tournament map with few default weapons like rocket launcher, plasma rifle, sniper, etc. These guys created their game over UDK. They actually ARE fucking using default scripts with minor tweaks. What exactly are they doing that is original? Feel free to list it all and convince why people should pay for it over downloading the free UT.

At least it doesn't look like ironic retro vomit.

I think you are under the assumption that I think this game doesn't. Despite shit visuals, they aren't re-skinning Unreal Tournament and selling it. I am OK with that.

So what's original about low-poly rendition of Heretic's ethereal crossbow and almost exact replica of Q1's SSG, both looking as if made in about 15' (including texturework) by someone with no prior experience with Blender?
The entire thing seems like one huge excuse to namedrop - "look! look! we're exactly like FPSes of old - we even ripped ethereal crossbow straight from Heretic to express our devotion, while making our models even blockier than in original Quake!".

If you find whatsitsname objectionable, then this shit is plain fucking offensive.
If you don't, well it still is.

Also, while no one demands AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA+ quality, technical excellence, even just attempted, is how you express your respect for your audiences. It shows that you've put effort into something as opposed to not even caring enough to fake some.

Hell, I am pretty sure Unreal 2 (not MP) had better flame thrower.
Actually Unreal 2 had pretty nice weapons overall*.
It was a shamefur dispray overall, but weapons, even though they sometimes looked like bunch of random parts welded together, were mostly decent.

other than spider ejaculator that is, seriously, fuck spider ejaculator.

I never said there was anything original about this game.

At least they aren't re-skinning UT from UDK and selling it as "new" game to shmucks.

There's another game called BRUTAL who is taking same "name all famous games and year people remember as being BEST" approach. They actually names Doom, Quake and Hexen in advertising.

"Frag like it's 1999." herp derp, re-skin and sell it like it's 1999 as well. Toxikk is a MOD using UDK, which had all UT gameplay/weapon scripts intact. If people fail to see why creating a MOD and re-selling it like that is fucking stupid (buying it, even more), then whatever.. good luck. I would have no issue with it if it actually did something more and shipped with SP component as well (you know, like the game engine it's based on).

Rainbow six siege is pretty competent although it is online only.
It doesn't even come close to the actually good Rainbow Six games, and tactical shooters are a different beast anyway.

Whenever an FPS is released or announced these days, at least one of the following is always true:

1) It's a modern shooter with regenerating health, level design consisting of scripted corridors (or alternatively an Ubisoftian open world full of boring filler shit) and slow-paced, gamepad-friendly gameplay.
2) It's a retro/"retro" shooter, meaning that it's either an indie game with zero original ideas, an arena shooter, and/or a tired attempt at resurrecting some old franchise that tries to be "old school" while still catering to modern audiences.
3) It's multiplayer only.

It'd be refreshing to see even a single shooter nowadays that doesn't have all these cancerous modern features or gameplay designed around gamepads, but which still have some ambition and preferably an original idea or two. Basically games that play like they were from the late 90's or something without trying to be like games from the late 90's. After around 2007 these seem to have all but dried up. There are the last two Stalker games, and then there's... uh, what else is there? I mean, surely there must be something, right?

I'd love to see a good shooter, but the genre is practically dead.

Never liked original Doom's soundtrack. I think the Playstation version improved a lot on that by adding good atmospheric music instead of some shitty metal (you can actually use the PS1 soundtrack with the Doomsday port). Doom works better as a horror shooter than some sort of going postal parody with zombies and demons. So would this new game. I can always turn off the music, but the movement speed makes the game resemble mp arena jumping and the new DOOM more than the old ones. Pity. The graphics are charming.

I guess you are also one of those rare Doom 3 fans?
Well, that's your problem and you won't may people agreeing with you. Doom's soundtrack is a perfect fit for the way game plays.
PSX Doom's changes were a p clever thing. Game had to be made easier and slower in order to accommodate console, but instead of simply making it so they also changed its visuals and music in a way that accommodates slower gameplay. It's a slower, more atmospheric, brooding game than its PC counterpart, and that carried up to D64.

Stop giving so much shit to this game because of its artstyle, who cares. Do you think this newfangled motion blur, depth of field, super detailed textures and HDR add anything of value?

No, but I also don't think a 2016 game (indie or not) claiming to take inspiration from 90s classics should look 20x worse than them. Also, despite what gaming journos and other hipsters would have you believe, the sole defining feature of 90s FPSes wasn't frenetic run and gun action (they also had intricate level design, varied and balanced arsenal, great art direction etc.).

Weird thing is that even people who are well familiar with the design principles of good 90s shooters are unable to create new games in that vein. For example, both Wrack and RoTT remake were made by people with tons of experience with Duke 3D and Doom mapping, and work on TCs for those games, and yet both games were completely subpar in the end.

The gameplay seems good but the level design is so basic and uninspired it reminds me of those shitty throwaway games that Jim Sterling destroys every day.

Whenever someone here says something like that, they typically mean "rare on the codex", or even worse, "rare among the loud minority of the codex". Now I haven't played Doom 3, but even if I had, your comment would have no value to me, as I have no especial respect for the opinion of most people here.

Well, that's your problem and you won't may people agreeing with you.

Just like most things the codex complains about are their problem, with few people outside the fringe caring about it or them, amirite?

What do you mean by slower gameplay? I've completed Ultimate Doom on both PS1 and PC, and I recall them as completely the same. I just don't skim through the levels with run button toggled on, I run when needed, so the gameplay is more atmospheric than fringe nerds like you doing nerdy speedruns.

I'm pretty sure a new Doom game made to my specifications would be a tremendous hit. The only reason so many people like the new DOOM and retarded arena shooters is because they don't know anything better.

My team has the sexiest and deadliest waifus you can recruit.
open areas are not good in these kinds of games, you need corridors, cramped rooms, bridges, vats of toxic goo, etc

my upcoming game built in a custom ray casting engine will have better level design than this (and billboard sprites instead of 3d enemies)
Descent 3 is what happens when enough people whine about cramped spaces which clearly shows they have no idea what the hell they are whining about, like people bitching about the Castlevania controls not being fluid enough
Descent used to be all about well-designed cramped spaces which allowed for clever enemy placement and varied combat encounters. Descent 3 made everything too fucking open and as a result all the combat plays out the same, in addition to enemies being more bulletspongy. It's changes in direction like that which makes me wonder whether older game designers were just flinging shit at the wall until something stuck, or whether the one guy who actually thought things through left Outrage during the development of Descent 3.
If you're going for more open areas, you'll need more enemies, and you'll need more BULLETS. Marathon Phoenix is one of the few entities to get that right, even if it's a custom scenario to some obscure game. Modders somehow know better than the entire AAA industry what makes a good FPS.

The new Descent is apparently made by different people than the old games. Check out Overload for a Descent clone actually being made by the people who made the original Descent. It seems to be a lot more faithful in terms of basic design decisions.

They still need a level designer it seems. You notice a lot of cramped corridors and indoor areas in the video, as well as very open areas.
