I cannot see the similarities between Darkest Dungeon and DaS.

I had never seen the game Perish before.

One ambitious Aussie developer is trying to create his own version of DaS.

Last update looks like this:
Hello everyone, time for an update!

The crowdfunding money ran out and I had to take on some freelance work to pay the bills. This means that while development can definitely continue, it's also necessarily slower. With the extra workload, I'm managing an average of 4-5 solid hours of work on the game per day, which isn't nearly as much as I would like but is still a decent chunk of development time every day. Consequently I'm not going to be able to hit the June release I was aiming for. However disappointed any of you might be about this, I am feeling it worse.

New time-frame is to get it out in Early Access sometime this year. Technically I could do that pretty soon, but I want to wait until the game is a bit more complete. The problems with early access seem mostly related to just not having enough of the game there yet to be a properly representative sample, to be actually fun for a decent chunk of time. I want to avoid that pitfall & make sure there's a sufficient amount of content and that the basic gameplay is reasonably polished, even if it's not feature complete.

I understand that I have been appallingly bad about writing these kinds of project updates, so in an effort to remedy that, I have created a development blog at http://blog.perishgame.com/ where I will post something every week, no matter what, even if it's just a GIF or a screenshot as a reminder that the game is still in active development. All updates on the game will now be through that blog instead of here, with the exception of major announcements, so please follow that instead.

Thanks for you patience and understanding, everybody.

And you can also check the game blog: http://blog.perishgame.com/

I kinda suspect without the 3Dness of Souls games that they won't be able to do stuff that makes enemy placement + environment interact well (much less stuff like "sequence breaking"). Nothing in the footage I've seen has made a particular "room" look interesting. Diablo rooms are pretty much just about simple roguelike chokepointing IIRC.

I'm thinking of stuff like the path up to the aqueduct from Firelink in DS that makes a ~20 second piece of gameplay you might run dozens of times, with only a few individually trivial enemies on it, still pretty fun.

No reason you can't put cliffs and terrain hazards in a 2D game. Link to the Past did that pretty well, for example (well, it did it rather half-assedly tbh; but I didn't want to use an obscure console game as an example.) It's more a matter of developer skill/effort than anything else. Diablo had boring terrain because they focused efforts elsewhere.

Yeah, you're right I suppose. I had an idiosyncratic definition of sequence breaking in mind.

I really haven't seen anything in Eitr videos that makes me think terrain or space will be interesting beyond the most basic chokepoint stuff though.

I hope this is a joke, especially since the guy sounded more intelligent than most of the Codex.
