You can easily skip the game, DraQ. It's much more a sequel to the original Elite than Frontier ever was. Which means that to someone like me, who grew up with the original, it's pretty rad. I doubt it's to your taste however.

And you know it, hence your attempt at trolling. Perhaps Pioneer gets somewhere, else I wouldn't hold much hope for a game like Frontier ever making it again.

They've been advertising with this since the start of development.

I got the advertisement stuff but would have liked to read that it's actually implemented like Bradylama wrote.

:salute:
Anyway, @ Elite: Dongerous fags, how's flight model? Are derpy max velocity limitations still in place? Rotation rate depending on velocity for whatever reason?
Tell me you can at least thrust freely with assist off (meaning main thrusters as well, not just RCS).

Assist off allows you to freely turn as much as you like but still in slow pace and it's clunky as hell without any indicators how much thrust you gave in a direction besides guessing.

Perhaps Pioneer gets somewhere, else I wouldn't hold much hope for a game like Frontier ever making it again.

FFE encounters still gets updated (recently in last Oktober) and looks pretty nice now. Still some old models around but it got updated very well.

Well, the sad thing is that if it didn't have derpy "tweaks" to Newtonian flight model - all two of them IIRC, max relative velocity and velocity dependent spin rate; and if it didn't have always online requirement I would have likely swallowed it - hook, line and sinker.

Essentially there seems to be the game I wanted already inside E:D, but it failed in its struggle to get out.

I expect I would be capable of mastering full assist-off flight if the only problem with it was clunkiness.

I encountered a bug; I was already in San Camasir when logging out yesterday. Login today and I was back to Fan Chau. Plus it seems they changed / tweaked the map? I had a different route plotted yesterday than I got today and I hadn't changed the lightyear restriction. Strange. Got blown up at a star and thought I lost the cobra because I couldn't afford the insurance. Turned out I had not to pay for the cobra. It was free like the sidewinder. Is that for backers? Is it only one time or always? Played solo.

Does anybody know if an autopilot exists?

Finally made my way to Lave. Good old-fashioned dictatorship is gone now replaced by democratic LIBERALS! LIBERALS! LIBERALS!
But there's a novel waiting which will probably explain the change in management.
I'm missing planet-descriptions which refer to the game lore. And it's a bit strange that a station is big into agriculture (food, vegetables, grain, tobacco) if it's surrounding a lifeless metal-rich world. I guess they are some sort of freeloaders profiting from Lave station.

Ok, I'm sitting in a Cobra MK 3 in Lave Station. Now the real game begins.

The free ship must be a bug, at least I never encountered such thing.

No autopilot unfortunately.

Why did you choose Lave by the way?

Oh, so the player started the original Elite on this station. Ok, I get it now.

Regarding Flight Assist Off: If you turn around and throttle up, you WILL slow down and eventually travel in that direction, so Flight Assist is now a fully "corrections off" mode.

It is actually implemented, the question is what trading actually does. They've been intentionally vague about the system I suppose because they don't want the players breaking it.

If you trade a lot with one station they will eventually be friendly to you, by the way. I dumped tons of rare goods on Harvestport and now they love me. I still have friendly status with Lave from Gamma trade running as well.

Does anybody know if an autopilot exists?

No, but there IS a docking computer that takes up an internal compartment slot and flies your ship to the landing pad for you. All ya have to do is get in front of the docking port and the computer takes over while playing Blue Danube.

Seems to work for the different local (sub-)factions. They all have an individual influence scale which seems to show how influential the party is at the current station/system (like the democratic labor party of Lave has 90% influence on Lave station). I guess you can change the ruling party when other factions gain more influence through your missions/trading e.g. substitute the Labor party (democracy) with the Jet familiy (dictatorship). Such things would be actually cool if coded in the game.

Damn. Docking computer is nice but I would have preferred an autopilot for hyperjumps and intersystem travel. It's a bit tedious but doesn't allow to do other things in the meantime like reading the manual.

What you just described is coded into the game, and the faction influence that you see for a station is true for the whole system. Just look at a system where one faction has control of more than one station and/or outpost: their influence values are the same. By elevating a faction out of power, you can end up fomenting a civil war or a system-wide election. Not sure who would call an election or start a civil war, but I think Democratic factrions would be primarily interested in holding elections.

Gaining faction influence is also slow going when your faction doesn't control any stations. The Communist Alliance has been trying to boost the Eranin People's Party in Asellus Primus for over a week, and we can't manage to get influence above 2%.

The exact same thing happened to me yesterday. A fucking cop flew right through my beam laser.

The simple fix, used by Wing Commander on MS-DOS nearly 25 years ago, is not to program the game in such a way that it shits its pants when your ship's weapons graze a friendly.

Yeah it should register a fixed ammount of damage before it goes all to hell.

i had it happen with two cop anacondas once, while we were ganging up on a third pirate anaconda... fun times. they cracked my canopy when i was trying to escape, and i forgot to check on the system map which outpost had repair capabilities, which of course was not the one i went to... at least going into the hanger refills your oxygen supply.
another "fun" thing is when you have turrets and leave them in the default mode, which attacks everything flagged hostile, then camp nav points for wanted ships and get a group where a wanted ship travels together with one or more clean ships. once you shoot and kill the wanted, the other ships will turn hostile, but will not open fire on you, which your turrents don't give a fuck about.

So, who the fuck uses a viper in this game? I was happy puppy with my eagle, which proved to be a nimble fighter. But I decided it was time to upgrade, so I bought the Viper, upgraded it with some modules and went pirate hunting. I thought I will be the king of the space, because I was doing quite allright with my eagle. And what happened? A few minutes later I was running away from a sidewinder with my tail between my legs. A fucking sidewinder. My next encounter with an eagle and another viper almost cost me my ship, they humiliated me.

This ship flies like a brick. It is fast, sure, but it can't turn for shit. I couldn't get behind any other ship. You can't even see the outside from the cockpit, because the upper side is covered, which is very unfortunate in a fight, since you have to follow the other ship with your eyes. I can't even fuel scoop with this junk because it overheats in a second.

Do any other of you use the Viper? How do you fair?

Everything you do in a viper you could do better with a cobra. Sadly theres no ship specializations at all, no more speed on the k warrant scanner, nothing improving the bounty hunter life. Right now bigger is better and thats all theres is to look for.

Are you gud with a Viper?

On another note, I'm on the verge of having enough of this game. Sorry, not the whole game, only with the mission part. I'm doing mission runs, and it is more grindy than most MMOs. Finding USSs is a pain in the ass, because it is total random. I'm looking for rebel transmissions now, and I spent at least 30minutes until finally found one with rebel transmissons. Fuck you Frontier. And guess what, when I just found what I was looking for, and wanted to scoop them up, the game logged out because of connection problem. I swear to god, if I log back now, and my ship won't be at the same spot, with the rebel transmission, I'm done with this game.

you won't be. the whole game is a huge grindfest, 'cause (as Mortmal mentioned) there is no ship balance in the game so bigger=better up until the Asp... then skip everything up to the Python and bam, game over. the more i play, the more boring it is

the Viper is good, better than the eagle with a few upgrades. i've been messing around with it (Viper, mostly A upgrades, 4 multicannons [E2+F1]) for the past 2-3h and i have no idea how you can screw up so badly that you're running away from a sidewinder. i had no problems with asps, clippers, cobras etc.. even managed to take down 2 condas and a python. anyway, a cobra with gimballed 2 laz0rs and 2 railguns/cannons/multicannons is a much much better combat craft in every conceivable way.

I already knew that mission timers run down even when logged off but I didn't know that docking time runs as well off when in the option menu. Got interrupted in real life and came back to have earned a fine. I just managed in time to leave the station before getting blown up by it for not docking in time. That's something they seriously have to change.
