I-War 2 has realistic flight mechanics in the sense of newtonian physics. Frontier has them as well and in the most realistic state but it's cumbersome to fly because you have to manually adjust every thruster (and only when you have a modded version) instead of having some board mechanics for regulating counter-thrusts etc. Evochron Mercenary has the best of both worlds giving you the feeling not being dependent on some gravity restraints. Elite Dangerous tries to do something similar but it's insisting on it's slow and cumbersome turning rate. That doesn't change with flight assist off.

I would have preferred to either copy Evochrons flight mechanics or take something like Wing Commander / Oolite. Instead they decided to copy WW2 flying mechanics to the T, "ground" gravity included when turning. Which just feels really wrong to me.

You could say I never really liked the Elite - no matter what version except Oolite - flight mechanics compared to all other spacesims. They always put something dumb in it.
So the only thing which is against Elite is the slow turning rate? This doesn't make the flight mechanics less realistic. Elite has weaker lateral and vertical thrusters, which makes the ship slower to turn. Frontier is popamole, since as you said, they had to use built in assistence which adds counter thrust. In Elite D, you have to apply manage your thrusts manually.

Number of stars in one galaxy in Space engine, where is your god now ED and SC ?

Great, the game has more systems which you will never visit.

that looks as if ed has more without even counting that most systems have multiple stars... and it's not like you need multiple galaxies for something that won't allow you to travel between them in your lifetime.
Yup, ED has more.

How does this game compare to the X3 series ?
Does it compare at all ?

X3 has like an hundred or so star systems, you can trade and build , and is a lot more feature complete. Elite dangerous has an universe to explore, unfortunatly there's not enough diversity in the randomized generation, no incentive to explore, its all the same. You can trade but not build any outposts ,prices and goods are the same everywhere. However theres a much better combat system, some limited matchmaking multiplayer, real hotas support, its the foundation of a game that will be great in one year or two when they add content.

prices and goods are the same everywhere.

My 3 man hours working a spreadsheet to find that sweet 1000 credit profit margin says otherwise. Prices can fluctuate day to day.

Also, I lost my multimillion credit fortune because I forgot to request landing clearance from M. Gorbachev with a cargo hold full of Palladium. I tried backing out of the entrance port but I was half a second too late, and the station defenses immediately blew me up. No money for insurance either so I couldn't resell my ship.

:negative:

Barely had enough money left over to get an Adder, which is a very cost effective mission runner, I must say. So for future reference: if you're in a big ship like the Lakon 7, 9, or for whatever reason the Anaconda, and are trespassing in a station then just exit the game. You're not going to back out in time.

Edit: Must say I'm pretty impressed with the Adder. It's a fighter on steroids, and enough cargo space to run any mission. It's perfectly capable of taking on NPC asps 1-1 with the right armament, and is perfect for fighter hunting at warzones.

I'm probably having much more fun in Space Engine than you are having in ED, i mean i can go instantly from one point from universe into to the other and i don't have to grind for a ship. Space Engine is what ED wanted to be without the grind.

And you don't pay a single cent for space engine.

Jesus, you are retarded. Space engine is what ED wanted to be? Space engine is just wallpaper. A pretty and huge wallpaper, but it is just that. I am amazed that people can spend more than an hour with space engine, because the pretty backdrops only go that far and get boring. Are you "playing" much with Google Earth too?

So what is more to ED than going from point A to point B ? Same as Space Engine which it doesn't pretend to be something more ?

i guess those flight sim fans never figured out that they would get much more enjoyment out of their games if they eliminated physics, different planes, and any player skill involvement. somebody should market google earth as the best flight sim ever.
since i doubt you are actually stupid enough to not see the obvious and instead came in here to troll intentionally, it begets the question why you still feel the urge to troll people playing other games after you found a supposedly superior one...

Does anyone know where I can find a list of default keyboard bindings/controls? I've seen some custom layouts, but not the original default bindings. Thanks.

Been playing and thoroughly enjoying more and more. Still only have my starting Sidewinder, decided to sell the bonus Eagle for creds.

Oddly the game plays more smoothly in Open than it did in training, hardly any stutter near planets, stars, or stations.

Learning more subtleties just through experience, such as not only how to easily defeat interdictions but also how to avoid them. Trading takes getting used to, just need to get more familiar with the necessary filters on the galaxy map. Don't feel like trawling through the rest of the thread; any basic trading tips here would be welcome.

Agreed that this game could be something special with more content, especially of the multiplayer co-op variety.

Been hanging around in the cluster I started out in. Defeated a few pirates, avoided my first interdiction, got my first delivery mission. All very fun baby steps. Then a radio source turns out to have a wreck and a cargohold worth of tech designs floating around it. Now, that's scary. Do I bail or scoop them up and try to do my first smuggling run? Decided to give smuggling a try. Then found that the one independent station in the system doesn't have a black market. Nor does the federal outpost. Do another radio source and find a ship that sends it wants to buy tech. However I find no way to communicate with them and just jettisoning my cargo doesn't make them pick it up and pay.

Puzzled and getting tired of this I decide to just go and try to fly into the big ass coriolis fed station. Approach. Line up. Turn off everything beside thrusters. Ask for clearance and just fly slowly in. Not getting scanned once by the circling patrols. Either my rep was high enough, my heat profile too small, I chanced upon a small break in their patrol coverage or whatever. I made it in and sold the tech at the black market. Netted a few thousand creds. Which at this stage still feels like a massive sum. More fun baby steps. Loving it so far.

You got lucky because turning off everything besides thursters doesn't bring down you signature enough to not get scanned. A faster and more safe route is to line up at 7 km, ask for docking request, put every power to engines, and boost forward full speed. This way you enter faster than they can scan you. Just don't smash into the wall and fly into the vagina hole. ;)

Firing chaff also disrupts scans temporarily, long enough to get through the docking ring.

You mean like on that youtube vid? Way beyond my skill level. Besides, I've done it over seven times now. Last time with confirmed fed patrol ships near me. Never got scanned. Mind you, I do turn off absolutely everything apart from thrusters. Signature bar is almost down completely. Perhaps just lucky, perhaps not. Whatever, I netted some quick and dirty cash through smuggling. Now I want one of those groovy interdiction devices and see what havoc I can cause with that.

heat and signature are different things, though connected. heat is the bar on the left (though very low heat will also result in low sig without silent running), signature is the weird signal line over fuel (the less agitated it is, the lower your signature). when you have everything off, you should turn on silent running too, as that will close your heat vents and reduce your signature further, just go in fast enough that you don't overheat. and for the alignment method, going at 4 engine pips and optimal thrust range is enough when you have silent running on and everything but thrusters and life support on.
the youtube vids usually show people aiming for the station with flight assist off, trying to get in using only momentum, so they can turn their thrusters off, though that is just crazy and very fucking deadly most of the time, esp with incoming traffic.

I think I'm going to shoot for the Cobra Mk. III for my first upgrade ship. Affordable, looks like a solid all-around choice. Good jump range, decent speed, decent cargo hold and a fair number of hardpoints. I like its multipurpose role.

Anything bad about it? Good choice?
