Loving the game so far. Space Trucking Inc. rules. Do hope they'll add more content as time goes by. Missions, player interaction, events and, especially, sights and shit to discover. More station designs would go quite a way already. Not even speaking about asteroid bases and the like.*

Anyway, that lovely icing effect. What is it tied to? Silent running with all the systems shut down for good measure doesn't do it. Play the game at high settings, so perhaps it's tied to that?

*Fuel stations in the upper stellar atmosphere of a star, ancient floating derelicts, mining stations in the oort belt, bizarre alien scultpures, a ringworld. Really, there are decades of sf to take inspiration from. Put some awesome shit to find in that void.
What's your nickname, I add you as a friend?

It's trashcanman78. Mind, I'm a complete noob and I won't have much time for playing in the next week. And I still haven't seen my ship ice over. Even with all systems down and silent running enabled.

I'm not a pro yet either. :) If you wan't to see your ship in ice cover, go silent running and fire a heat sink.

I don't remember original Elite being this convoluted in its ability to simply look up the fucking prices on another system. It was just a listing, like any other.

All in all, Elite Dangerous is a bizarre combination of compelling simulation and retarded design decisions made to waste time. It's not a game for someone keenly aware of time slipping through their fingers, as it reminds me too much of a cubicle job that I quit.

This joystick is meant for better things. Wonder if I can get that emulated Mechwarrior running...

There aren't any new features since the Gamma launched, other than interface changes and bug fixes. There's probably not going to be much to talk about until the first expansion. The one big change is that the dynamic events system is now working after the failure to incite a civil war in Lugh. Independent factions are even capable of expanding into, and taking over neighboring systems, but there hasn't been enough time for players to grind enough influence to achieve a takeover. Right now the focus of most players is to make as much space bux as possible, and maybe participate in story-related events. So far the Slave Rebellion of Sarbago was crushed, and the Nationalists of Jera were also defeated, but I think that's because nobody actually bothered to fight in Jera other than me and a few other communist players.

If you want your ship to ice over, don't go silent running. Silent running closes your radiator fans, which reduces your external heat signiature. But it also means your internal heat rises faster than normal. Switch off unnecessary systems, pop a coolant purge. Once your heat hits 2-3%, you should ice

So I just found out that Adaptive V-Sync is a thing, and is supported by Nvidia cards going all the way back to the 600 series.

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/adaptive-vsync/supported-gpus

You can activate it in the 3D settings for programs in your Nvidia control panel. I've immediately noticed a massive improvement in the reduction of artifacting and stuttering when I'm running below 60 fps, and it's a much cheaper alternative than buying a 600 dollar G-Sync monitor for those of us without Star Citizen money.

Would have done it too, but i wasnt aware the reputation system was fixed. The lugh event failure, make people think twice before crossing 300 LY again.

So what's the consensus on this game? Is it worth playing? How does it compare to old space sim games?

I've never played Elite before. Only played some Freespace, Colony Wars back 15+ years ago.

meh always online.

It depends:
if you want a story -> no -> alternatives: I-War 2, modded Oolite with mission packs
if you want to land on planets -> no -> alternatives: Elite Frontier D3D (now with even better graphics), Evochron Mercenary
if you want realistic or semi-realistic flight mechanics -> no -> alternative: Evochron Mercenary, I-War 2
if you want fast-paced, reactive flight mechanics -> no -> alternative: Evochron Mercenary, I-War 2
if you love conventional flight sims -> yes
if you like tweaking your ship -> yes
if you like trade runs selling goods from A to B -> yes, alternatives: Ooolite, Elite Frontier D3D
if you want a huge universe -> yes
if you want good combat mechanics and good flight mechanics -> depends completely on personal taste here. Thankfully you can download the combat demo and test the flight mechanics for yourself. Personally I dislike it but can maybe accept it as time goes by.

The game tries to be a space sim with all the complexity of a sim involved but WW2 flight mechanics in space. The ships fly and sometimes sound like airplanes. Can't say that the game is the space sim to replace all other. It's better in some aspects but weaker in others.

But keep in mind that Morkar is a faggot, so don't listen to him.

The game has semi-realistic flight mechanics and it can gat fast paced if you get into a fight with the right opponent.

There's no semi-realistic flight mechanic. It's literally airplanes in space. It's not like e.g. in Wing Commander or original Elite or Oolite which I would have preferred in that case.

But he can play the demo and see for himself. No need to go all fanboy on me ;)

The airplains in space is only true if you use flight assist. Without it, it is nothing like that.

flight assist off isn't realistic at all, either. But at least it's there.

I-War 2 has realistic flight mechanics in the sense of newtonian physics. Frontier has them as well and in the most realistic state but it's cumbersome to fly because you have to manually adjust every thruster (and only when you have a modded version) instead of having some board mechanics for regulating counter-thrusts etc. Evochron Mercenary has the best of both worlds giving you the feeling not being dependent on some gravity restraints. Elite Dangerous tries to do something similar but it's insisting on it's slow and cumbersome turning rate. That doesn't change with flight assist off.

I would have preferred to either copy Evochrons flight mechanics or take something like Wing Commander / Oolite. Instead they decided to copy WW2 flying mechanics to the T, "ground" gravity included when turning. Which just feels really wrong to me.

You could say I never really liked the Elite - no matter what version except Oolite - flight mechanics compared to all other spacesims. They always put something dumb in it.

imo it's not gravity, it's ships being flat and thus having more thrust area pointing upwards/downwards than sideways, thus moving up/down or rolling being faster than moving sideways. at least that's what i like to tell myself....

that looks as if ed has more without even counting that most systems have multiple stars... and it's not like you need multiple galaxies for something that won't allow you to travel between them in your lifetime.
