I get your point, really, but I suppose I am becoming more of a miser as I age. For that much money, I do expect to a lot.

Being pedantic, 50-100 hours is a lot of time - it's how densely filled that is with evolving (plot) / advancing (ship/character upgrading) / ongoing novelty (new locations, new types of event, etc) that matter. And I'm not getting that vibe ... yet ... from what I experienced so far.

Rather, it seems like the feel is more like BG1 with it's outdoor area after outdoor area to clear (gross generalisation to illustrate my point), than BG2, with it's nicely paced sense of evolution/advancement/ ongoing novelty. (Both of these games I spent many hundreds of hours on, each, but I can't really face BG1 anymore ... better things to do with my time.)

I could be completely wrong. I'm hoping I am.

I just don't slam my fists down on my keyboard repeatedly like a baboon, venting impotent rage and shitting myself before pressing the Post Reply button.
Yeah, you're no fun at all. :D

Seeing some complaints over the interwebs how this game is becoming very samey, nothing to do, etc. Still waiting for final release though.

It is not like Frontier had a lot of things to do, for example... And I'm guessing this will be more like Frontier than original Elite (no aliens and alien missions).

So if I'm not big on realism/Newtonian Physics/extreme simulation and prefer open-exploration/free-roam/trading/fighting/whatever; which is superior: this or Star Citizen?

Cargo scanning outside the station and shooting the ships apart as they dock makes absolutely no sense... But eh.
stealth in space makes even less sense, yet there you are (and it adds to the game as well).

star citizen isn't much of a game yet, so no telling.

Beta 2 isn't even out yet. We're talking about a limited gameworld without even half of eventually planned content. They only just now implemented the Bulletin Board system. People complaining about the Beta being "samey" just don't have a clue. This is not a full game, and they told people that when they bought the Beta.

the thing is, while i'm sure they'll have some contestable systems and dynamic mission lines including events, this is still elite. elite was less about ship upgrades as it was about getting a ship setup you are comfortable with for your chosen way of fucking with the galaxy and doing so until you grow bored.
this is unlikely to change, even with multiplayer and player controllable capital ships.

thargoids are confirmed as in in the form of encounters, and may be escalated to something more later. so it's elite with possible upgrade to ffe or something different altogether.

Hostile alien space exploration is definitely something that could be built upon greatly. Would be awesome to see a space MMO where you actually explore completely virgin alien galaxy and stake your claim on it.

Basically what I'm afraid of is when this game comes out, seeing reviewers give it high scores while at the same time describing it as a sort of a "Zen experience".

I want a space combat game, not Euro Truck Simulator. Attention spans in 2014 are not quite the same as in 1984, and the same mechanics are not enough.

I did get the impression doing milk runs that I was basically playing Space Truck Simulator, but that will come with the territory. There's still more combat and adventure around for the taking.

It's temporary. There's supposed to be fines implemented for minor infractions (including jumping away from the police interdictions before they scan you). You can elect not to pay your fines. But if you accumulate enough, the game will. Generate hunt&kill bounty missions on you for other players.

  • rack up large amount of fines
  • game generates hunt & kill bounty missions
  • park stock Sidewinder in asteroid field, go AFK
  • wannabe Boba Fett shows up to collect bounty
  • your six friends pop out from behind asteroids
  • rinse and repeat

Why's that? That's not a bug, it's a feature. Put another way, it's not a problem, it's a solution.

New newslatter a while back with more previews of [S]real-money microtransactions[/S] actual game features to come in the next beta.

Ship weathering! Have yoru shit banged up as you take damage!
Weathering.jpg

New starport! This one is special because it can have giant engines attached to it and get flown to where it's needed. Have a rare resource pop up in a frontier system? These are the spaceports that get flown ever-so-slowly over there

New mission types!
Missions

In Beta 1 we included the mission framework, and in Beta 2 we will expand it some more. So far we have simple courier missions, but we plan to build this out as we move through the beta to release and beyond, with escort missions, assassination missions, tail-and-report missions, group missions, policing duties, in addition to guns-blazing mercenary assignments.

More complex missions that lead into others are coming too. Some missions will be based on your current status, ranks and ratings (also coming for Beta 2) so only available for those with certain higher rankings and ratings.
Missions will tie in with the Galnet news feeds – something else planned for Beta 2 – where newsworthy events will trigger related missions. Will you be the one to safely take El Presidente out of the system after the failed coup? Or maybe you will be in one of the ships chasing him down!

Espionage missions are interesting. These can be for the military, or for unscrupulous corporates, and will rely on how good you are (and how well equipped you are) with the heat-based stealth mechanics in your ship. Frequently you will not be able to get away cleanly from such missions, perhaps ending up with an assassination mission on your head!

Clarification of Procedurally-generated vs player-influenced content!
Commander Hydrino - How will Frontier force the PG universe to change over time? Will these methods include some form(s) of player-caused change/damage persistence? For instance if a small mining colony building is destroyed, how can that persist and be repaired over time if PG always creates the objects exactly the same for all players?
  • Procedural generation is only a tool we use here. Players continually change a system – by leaving cargo and wreckage around, changing the prices of goods, and so on. Bigger changes are for example when many players collaborate to influence the outcome of a territorial dispute or a revolution. This can change the allegiance of a system, which very much changes the way it works. You might see a military build-up in response to player actions, and many missions associated with this. Any changes are stored on our servers. If for example something (like your mining colony building – or even a player-owned mining machine – things that will come after first release) is destroyed, then it will be stored as destroyed on our servers, and that is how you will see it in the game, at least until it is repaired or removed. New stations will be built over time and new markets open. Everything can be changed if there is a reason to do so. So the game will evolve with a cloud based narrative where each and every player’s actions impact and create an evolving storyline.
