Behind you.
I see what you are saying now, I read it quickly while scrolling and missed the "get out of the chair" part. The flying out definitely happens and is the most annoying part of the game imo.
I don't know if they plant players' butts in seats now in the save game code now, but it used to be if you were playing with friends and the server disconnected, all the players that weren't piloting the ship would be stranded out in space where their location was when the game last saved. If you've ever played Empyrion, you'll know that being stuck in space can be a HUGE problem if you're not kitted out for being in space. Funny to look back on as far as bugs go, but I'm sure it made a lot of people unhappy the first time it happened to them.

Hmm, I can't remember disconnecting while piloting, but I'll give it a shot later with logging off while piloting and see if I'm still sitting.

The game definitely doesn't remember if you are in a seat and someone flies the ship away though. Sucks having to suicide and lose all your stuff, but you get faster at rebuilding and ideally stock extra weapons and ammo in strategic places.

You have to play on their servers?

I already own the game through steam, just curious if I should pick it up from them also.

I snagged it from Epic Store yesterday for free. One of those games where playing the cracked, non-multiplayer versions just doesn't satisfy, i think (ever notice that most of these occasionally free offers of popular games offered by Epic or Steam tend to be single-player where you don't have online servers?). So I tend to get these online ones when they're offered for free or a buck or two when on sale, whether I play it or not. Epic Store was once scheduled to give Conan Exiles away but then someone must have thought "Nuh uh... this game is premium online stuff! No freebies!"

So how is it in comparison to no man sky?
It's actually playable and has a nice, though somewhat simplistic base/spaceship creation and combat.
I've played the demo, it had bad economic balance and an almost nonexistent storyline. Though I've liked the desert planet tutorial missions.
For some time it provides a pretty nice feel of exploration (not quite like the one Minecraft provided in my youth but good enough).

Far more autistic base building, also has ship/vehicle building out of voxels unlike NMS which doesn't have ship building of any kind. Also allow you to build space bases, go on EVA, die from space exposure if your suit/armor is not kitted out to resist the space environment, get stranded in space if you forgot to add a mod with RCS thrusters. Better POIs you can find and raid (Zirax military outposts, labs infested with alien shit) so exploration is actually IMO far better/more rewarding. I think in general the combat is better in this despite being janky as fuck (seriously fuck Sentinels and the GTA wanted levels of NMS). Galaxy is definitely smaller and spaceflight within systems isn't "seamless" (you jump from planet to planet, only fly seamlessly between moons and the parent body)

I think the best way to describe the two is to say that the crafting of bases is a tacked on feature in NMS while in this crafting shit out of voxel blocks is the core feature around which the rest of the game is built. On the other side NSM is built around a fairly impressive large scale procedural generation system, one that throws utterly uninteresting content at you making any and all exploration utterly poinltess, to the point where the NSM didn't even have a location bookmark system at release, r00fles.

tl;dr I rather take take janky as fuck minecraft in space barely running on Unity that is Empyrion over NMS any day.
